I love defense...

I get the feeling that Coyle is brilliant more than Jones or Clemons have all of a sudden turned into elite players.

Still when I watch Clemons and Jones, they seem to be a step behind a lot of the time. They're not bad, but they're not top echelon players at their positions in my eyes.

Game to game gradual improvement could make them pretty good as the season progresses. We can hope.

Nobody said he was elite..just better production relative to the criticisms.

Not being bad is a huge step in the right direction... lol

And he cut his dreads. Anybody have dreads on this team? He really has seemed to improve. So far this staff has been able to get guys to improve much faster than the last.

That was actually a pretty nice catch on the int too.

It's interesting though if you Coyle is the a big part of why these guys took the next step. If that's the case you could argue that throwing a pick towards Coyle (Xavier Rhodes) could do wonders.

I for one think Clemons has improved greatly this season! His coverage is better and tackling is MUCH improved.

Coyle has a reputation in the league as a bit of an alchemist with a secondary.

Well, if you look at what he did with Reggie Nelson and Chris Crocker in Cincinnati, you can easily draw the conclusion that Kevin Coyle is undoubtedly doing something that "covers up" the weaknesses of his safeties. This may otherwise be known as putting your players in a position to succeed by understanding what they do well and what they don't do well.

Are they top players? I don't think so. In fact, if you look at the objective data WPA and +EPA, both players are around the bottom of the league among starting safeties. Based on this, I still see this as an area that will need to be looked at hard for improvement in the offseason. Both players are young though, and they may improve in the playmaking department.

Well, have to say since turnover output has doubled compared to this point last yr, Coyle and Jones/Clemons are doing something properly

Still think CClemons is completely upgradeable, rarely have I seen a Safety with such slow reactions.

That being said, I don't think you can take that much credit away from them. They're both playing quite well, to the point where it's going to be pretty difficult to justify replacing them without stumbling upon a guy BPA.

I agree. PFF has Jones as the 4th rated S and Clemons as 18th, which puts him in the top 30% percent of starting safeties. The Dolphins are 4th in opponent passer rating, 1st in opponent 3rd down conversion percentage, and although Dolphin opponents are passing against them more than any other team in the league, we are still in the top half of the league in fewest 20+ and 40+ yard plays allowed. That all speaks pretty well of the safety play. They haven't given up a TD to an opposing TE and although they have given up some yards, i-hasn't been anything crazy and I think that is part of the bend-but-don't-break nature of this pass defense.
