What I found most interesting was the last part:
I think a few people calling for Dan Henning's head might want to see that. Pennington unfortunately made a botched call, although I don't like seeing Henning throwing him under the bus like that (unless that question was specifically posed as to who made that decision).
Hopefully that clears the air a bit, or at least helps to answer some of the questions we all have.

It's not really throwing Penny under a bus IMO.. it might seem like it at first but if they didn't want to give him the option to do that they didn't have to.

Regardless of who made the call, it was a bad desicion.

Manning wouldn't have made that call.
You have to play to win. You won't succeed if you play to not lose.adamprez2003 likes this. -

We still had two timeouts in that situation. There was no reason to play it safe.

I don't disagree one bit that it was a bad call. I do think however that if the QB sees a chink in the defense's armor, he should be trusted to be able to make that call based on his experience, and make the adjustment. We were gashing them on the run for massive plays all game. It obviously wasn't the right call, but if something he saw made him believe it was at the time, I for one can't really fault him for that.
Now whether or not that was what happened who knows. Maybe he didn't want to take the chance of the high pressure situation resulting in a deflating turnover, and decided to play it safe?
I do see your point about the coaches needing to make the call to put it in the air, but I think our QB and coach need to be on the same page on this one. Once you get down to the line the QB is the only person who can both look and say "This isn't going to work" and make an adjustment. If you can't trust him to make the right call there, you don't have the right guy in place. -
Makes me wonder if those two runs before the two minute warning were also Chads doing.

Either way I doubt we'll see Henne come in unless Penni really obviously just blows it, or gets injured.Fin D likes this. -
Its my understanding that it was an either or play based on the defensive looks. If that's true and you factor we were running over them all night, it may not have been that Penny was scared.
It was a bad decision to be sure, but I'm not so sure we should questioning the guy's courage. -
I don't think that call has anything to do with Chad's belief that he can make the play or whether or not he has the courage to try and complete a pass in that situation. The fact was that he thought he saw a break in the defense and thought it was the best play against that front.
It was obviously not successful, but it is ignorant to question a guys courage or mental fortitude due to this play call.Fin D likes this. -
It's still Henning's fault for not calling a play that beat what they were doing.

DC Pasqualoni sounds like he is making excuses, I don't care about last week's game, that is in the rearview mirror, our Defense was flat out raped by the Colts and what DC P is saying is not exactly inspiring confidence in me.

I'm trying to imagine Dan Marino being given the choice, in those situations, between calling a pass play or a run play...
Yeah, uh-huh. Think I know the answer to that hypothetical.jdang307 likes this. -
I never saw how anyone could be mad at Henning for calling an outstanding game that keeps Peyton Manning off the field for 45 minutes...

Dan Henning is a little too old to be running down on the field and making the TD catches for Ted Ginn, Jr. He has to rely on his players to execute. Hell Henning gave us every opportunity in the freakin' world to win that game! We shoved the ball down their throats for 45 minutes for cryin' out loud! We should feel lucky to have Dan Henning as our OC, imo. -

Pennington has the option to run or pass frequently. If you hold the ball for 45 minutes you had a good gameplan...Last edited: Sep 24, 2009 -
In the end, I'm not sure Henning cost us the game. As noted earlier, 45 minutes of possession is a lot and it should be enough to win this game. I think the issues that stand out are the safety play and the linebacker play. They are in position to make plays, they're simply not executing. You can't miss tackles, you can't leave your zone, you can't over-pursue and then expect to catch up to Dallas Clark on a wheel route outside the hashes. Those are things that can't be done. -
we could be seeing a damaged confidence level in pennington in general. -
Henning just had a brutal end to that game. As he admits he sent the wrong personnel package out there that made us burn 30 seconds or so and then a time out as well.... And then we ran the ball 3 times on that drive.
I love the idea of calling 2 plays in the huddle and then leaving it up to Chad to check to the right one based on coverage but in that situation they both need to be pass plays. Not a run and a pass. There is no excuse IMO to need a TD with that little time left and still run the ball 3 times on that drive and most of that blame falls on Henning IMO.
