Bah! That would have been nice lol. Carpenter is younger with alot more upside. Ayodele is what he is so I think they probably felt safer letting him go. Coupled with Fasano (who is clearly the main piece in the trade), we got pretty good value for a 4th round quick. Adding in Carpenter would have been highway robbery imo.

 

Yeah hes 28 year old player and a 5 consecutive 100 tackle player. I dont understand why they would let him go instead of Carpenter when he has clearly been a success for them since leaving JAX. But I am not complaining since we got him.

Why not Dallas supposedly is no longer high on Williams, I "thought" there was some talk of the Cowboys letting him go.

And Roy Williams knows our Defense, he would be an upgrade over what we have now IMO.

Underachieving player for underachieving player would be a push, and not in our interests, if Allen won't start here though, I could see a deal like that going down, they both are from same Draft Class so it would be a even swap contract wise.

 

I'm sorry but I dont see how Roy Williams is an upgrade over JA. Roy is terrible in coverage which is why you see Hamlin the only safety back there while Roy blitzes.

JA largest problem is blown coverages, for whatever reason, Williams is not great in coverage, but he is in position most of the time, I can see Sparano and Bowles going with the guy who won't blow plays over the one who can make more plays.

Good points. I heard that the defensive coaches were very critical of Roy last year. They were displeased with his playing which is why them cutting Roy reports surfaced.

 

Not to sound defensive, but where exactly are you getting your stats from? He was very good in Jacksonville and he's been steady in Dallas, but he's only had 100 tackles once in his career. Last year he had 57 tackles w/ no sack, ff or ints. It isn't much production for what he gets paid. They have better guys on their roster who will make less money. He wasn't going to make that team. He might contribute for us, but we aren't comparable to Dallas at this stage of the game talentwise. Based on his college career and age, Carpenter has more value, even if he hasn't done anything to this point.

I disagree with that (gently though) Carpenter cannot and has not been able to crack the starting line up in Dallas, even when Ayodele slumped, he still could not make it past Burnett on the depth chart.

That is part of the reason why a Allen/Carpenter or Williams trade would make some sense, Allen has been unable to crack our lineup until the most Dire of Circumstances, it took 4 safeties with three being injured and CB moved to safety before he could see the field..

 

He's a talented player, but he can't show it, if he plays in a system that doesn't fit his strengths!

 

I'm probably in the minority here, but I think that Roy Williams (Dallas S) is vastly overrated. He's great in run support, but a complete liability in the passing game. In fact, I thought there was talk of moving him to OLB, where there are less pass coverage responsibilities. I'll take an up-and-down Jason Allen in my secondary over Roy Williams every time.

As far as Carpenter goes, I'd love to have him on the team, but not at the price of high-level compensation or other young players. If he doesn't fit Dallas's scheme, there's no way he's going to fit ours. He's probably best playing in a Cover 2 4-3 with a team like Tampa Bay or Indianapolis.

I totally agree here. Roy is a sure thing and a very very physical guy, but he is not good in coverage and he's at an age where he's only going to decline, not improve. Jason Allen may or may not pan out, but I'd rather give him another year to develop and draft a safety with all of the tools if it doesn't work out. We also have Bell, Crocker and Hill (when he gets healthy) in the safety mix. While not great, we can get by with that group for the 2 spots.

Agreed on Carp too. I like his talent, but his value has declined since being drafted since he's been unable to break into the lineup. He's worth a mid to later round pick at this point only imo.

 

I've got to disagree a bit, Williams was drafted in 03 or 04, he is moving into his prime, JA while physically gifted, has a total of 8 games under his belt and the pre TC talk is he will be moving to SS, where he will be more responsible for coverages and that is his weakness, if he was a run supporting FS only, then "sure" that is where he had success last year.

If we were going to try to use Allen the way the Cowboys used Williams, then I think he could hack it, but so far, we are not.

 

I'm not sure if Roy has lost a step or if teams have just figured out how to exploit him better, but I think he seemed better in a coverage a few years ago than he is now. My only point is that he seems to have gotten worse rather than better. I just feel if Allen isn't our guy, I'd rather see us draft someone next year or sign a FA who is better in coverage.

 

It would've been the best use of a second-day pick since we drafted Zach Thomas.

Ok I was one of the first one or the first to post when this trade happened on the draft eve around 10:30 pm. I say, guys we need to just let it go lol We got Adoyle whom isn't bad good size 6'2" 250 plus and still quick. This guy is a former 4 time probowler and a 100 tackle a year man over the last 3-4 years. I would have been happy with getting Fasano for just the 4th and YES it would have been nice to get Carpenter as well but I mean don't you think we have PORKED the COWGIRLS enough this year. Sort of like a gangrape of there team and front office this year.


So I say let's let it go and enjoy what we received for what we gave up.

Flawed logic. Carpenter hasn't seen enough playing time to prove anything. Dallas has a very deep linebacker corps; it's hard even for a 1st round pick to crack that lineup, especially now that Zach Thomas is in town.

Jerry Jones not trading Carpenter is one of the few smart things he's done since he assumed full control of the team.

I agree Carpenter has barely seen the field and earlier this offseason he was one mentioned that would be released, I still see that as a possibility as he doesn't fit Phillips schemes well.

 

If he's released, we get first dibs on him. So basically we'll pick him up for free.
