Atta boy, Dave. Well said.
Favorite part:
Ever since this one point in time where there was an open question going around...would you be disappointed if Tannehill didn't start. Everyone's natural reaction was just of course not, he's not meant to start, no way, etc. And I'm just sitting here thinking, as someone that approved of drafting him, and even someone that predicted Garrard would ultimately win the battle...yeah I'd be disappointed if he didn't make it off the blocks in this race. I expect him to compete and make a good showing, beat at least one of these two mediocre quarterbacks, and actually give the coaches some sleepless nights deciding on the winner.
That's what I expect from a #8 overall with dynamic physical ability that walks in with one of the most unique advantages I've ever seen any quarterback have, being coached by the exact same coaches in the exact same system he was in at the college level.
Anyway, what Dave is trying to bring up is...talk to the Dolphins about this competition. There have been points when everyone is so sure Tannehill isn't competing for this job that they've flat out suggested that's the plan, as if the Dolphins have known this all along, never planned to allow him to compete, etc. And I admit, when he went through all of the OTAs without a SINGLE rotation with the 1st unit, until he stormed into the coaches' offices and demanded it, and finally got a rotation on the 3rd day of Mini Camp...it almost kind of looked that way. But the people that actually do speak to the Dolphins have kept saying they emphatically consider Tannehill every bit a part of this race, as Hyde alludes to when he says it's "w-i-d-e open".
Dave has been trying to point out on Twitter and through this article that the Dolphins, in particular Mike Sherman who has been firmly in Tannehill's corner since before he was hired by the Dolphins, aren't holding back on the optimism. They're not trying to caution anyone.
I like that.

Darlington has said as much for weeks on NFLN even though everyone keeps not paying attention. If he can't beat out an old injured QB or a journeyman, that would be pretty disappointing. Aaron Rodgers may have been ready, but regardless, it was Brett freaking Favre.

I have confidence that our staff will handle this situation correctly and I'm excited to see how this all plays out. Can we finally have our
franchise guy? Man I hope so.Phyl, HULKFish, dolfan7171 and 1 other person like this. -
The problem is that he won't have a chance to face the combination of real game speed and defenses that are schemed against a rookie QB at any time before the regular season, so whatever "beating out" he does will be on artificial grounds.
He could very well "beat out" Garrard and Moore in camp and the preseason and still be the wrong choice at QB during the regular season if this team is trying to win games.MrClean likes this. -
I think this 'new' situation says a lot more about Tannehill than the coaches or anyone else. Whether it's true or not, I'm sure he heard just like the rest of us that he was being placed on the back-burner, and the competition was 'really' between Moore and Garrard. He obviously didn't take that lying down. He took it upon himself to work his butt off, and go out and win the job. That says an awful lot about that guy. Things like that make me more and more confident that the Phins actually may have finally found... 'The Heir.'
I must say, I wasn't expecting Tannehill to actually compete for the starting spot. The only reason being that he merely started 19 college games at QB, and for that reason I tempered my expectations. I knew physically and mentally, he could do it. I just didn't expect him to have the maturity, the confidence, and the swagger right out of the gate.
Now... I still fully expect Garrard to win the starting job in the end. However, what I HOPE happens is... Tannehill kicks all their asses, and wins the job outright.
Go, Tanny!! -
I have doubts if he'll be ready to start week 1... and I wouldnt be disappointed at all honestly if he didnt win it by week 1. However, he is definitely playing better than I had expected. I am going to hold back until we get to see him go against the 1's... but I am struggling to temper some excitement about the kid. We'll see...
However, while I'm slowly becoming less concerned about him being ready to be the starter of this team... I still have concerns of whether this team is ready for him to be the starter, and be able to support him enough to help him properly develop and grow as a quarterback. If our WRs cant create any seperation and Tannehill is just sitting back there taking shots from the defense... I dont care how well he knows the offense or how ready he is individually. We really need some of these targets for him to really step up this year...finsincebirth, Larry Little, HULKFish and 2 others like this. -

I was saying this on twitter earlier today but don't be surprised if Tannehill opens with the 1st team on Wednesday.
1. Garrard and Moore each had two rotations with the 1's, so there's something right sounding about them each getting two for every one Tannehill gets, for the time being.
2. Peter King will be there, and there's nothing wrong with showing off your well performing #8 overall rookie in front of a national audience.
3. Ryan Tannehill will have an entire "day off" to prepare for it (using the term loosely, they'll expect him to use the time to study film and whatnot).
4. He's kind of earned it, with his fast start to training camp, arguably outperforming all three QBs on Sunday and then perhaps two out of three on Monday.
5. It will be the first day he can appear in full pads along with the rest of the players.
6. Mike Sherman did say he'll be getting some reps with the 1's when they get him up to speed, and noted it'll probably be sooner than later.
7. If they get Tannehill his rotation on Wednesday, it leaves Thursday and Friday to rotate to Moore & Garrard again, heading into the Saturday scrimmage.
So **** it, ride the wave. -

Anyway I remember a while back reading a study where they found starting vs not starting your first year had no impact on the long term success of a first round QB.NJFINSFAN1, Phinj, SICK and 3 others like this. -
I would only be disappointed if he wasn't starting by mid-season. I'd love if he was our week 1 starter. part of it is how our new right side is performing. If they are up to speed and looking good in the preseason games, I'd be more likely to let Tannehill start. If they are lacking cohesion, then just hold off so Tannehill doesn't get killed.

This is where the coaches make or break their careers. They have to have the knowledge to know if he is ready or not and then make a decision. If they start Tanne, then they are staking their future on that decision. At some point if you like the coach and think he is the qb guy alot say he is, then you have to have some faith he wont start Tanne if he isnt ready to face a reg season defense.

That article just got me hyped a bit..
I just don't think this is a normal situation, the variables in play demand us to look at it from a different perspective, the guys talent level demands us to rethink what's going on here relative to his competition..Personally for me it has nothing to do with playing him now to get his bad reps out of the way..
It has everything to do with who gives us the best chance to win.
If I could paint a picture with my eyes on what stood out the most to me from RT, it was this hellbent attitude he had the moment he took the field, (to steal a line from Lebby) he basically pulled out his dong and waved it all over the place, and didn't give a sh&$ who was looking, it was the fact that he was worried about and working on ball placement, while his competition was working on getting the ball out on time, one of my favorite moments of him directing the 2nd team like they were privates in his platoon, was in 2 min offense, thigpen finds himself in the wrong position, RT grabs and throws his *** back into where he was supposed to be, two seconds later, he was pitching him the ball for a sweep left..Also the fact that the accuracy displayed was ridiculous, also that the velocity and trajectory is ideal, also, the mobility and ability on the run to improvise is off the charts..sorry. Had to get it all in that paragraph.
Sherman was right, he missed two early throws, but he also threw the ball really well..
IMO, if he doesn't get the start week one, it's because they are taking the approach that Rafs and Clean continue to point out, no matter how good he looks, you still take the slow approach. .
I believe that this dude would totally disagree with them on this subject though, cause he's surely not being bashful about wanting the job, and I think we all can agree, that's a reason to be very excited, competitive nature is there.
If that's what we wanna do, then the standard for the vet is to have a winning record at the bye week, or he's toast.. -
If the plan was to start him right away the articles would be:
Greg Cote: Tannehill should sit right away & Dave Hyde - Is Tannehill's time later rather than sooner?
Some QB's excel with time, some QB's excel with being thrown into the fire. None of us or the sportswriters know which group Tanny falls in.
I will say, has waiting ever killed a QB, because I think cases can be made that starting them too early has? -
I'm always the optimist, but I'll have to agree with FinNasty, that even if he is ready, will the team around him be. That will be the biggest thing. Obviously if you have a legend playing in front of you (Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre) then you have that luxury of time. If the receivers look pretty good (which I honestly expect them to, as I really think it is a good group), and RT looks good throughout the preseason... then why wait?
Of course he will need to play lights out or very solid to keep the naysayers to keep from giving the "I told you so's", but if Sherman and Philbin, and Ireland all believe he is ready, I say why not. Not to mention that RT seems confident enough to come back from a bad performance, which Henne never really did.FinNasty likes this. -

Besides, I wouldn't mind seeing a year (or even half a year) of him truly developing his strengths and fine-tuning his craft rather than weekly preparing for the upcoming opponent.Fin D likes this. -
He sounds like he is dead in the middle of the competition to be the starting QB. If by the end of TC its as close as being reported, then he should start.
But its hard for me to get excited when he hasn't even put pads on. Once he has live rushers coming at him, it will be another test for him. Then after that test, he'll be tested with an environment that isn't so controlled. There will be a number of tests. So far it appears he's passed the test of looking good in shorts.
I have 0 expectations. I'm just going to take it as it comes. -
There is no way to prepare for game speed other than playing in games. I'm not sure exactly what some people think sitting on the bench does. Obviously it has benefits, the major one being that you have a full season to digest the playbook, learn the scheme and terminology and so forth. That is the advantage Tannehill needs much less than other young QB's.
The other obviously is working on mechanics and fine tuning your game. Every young player needs this. At the end of the day you can either adjust to the speed of the game or you can't. If he is the best man he should start.Eop05 likes this. -

The pads are totally irrelevant. Take the red jersey off him, and that's a different story. But that won't happen until preseason games.Dol-Fan Dupree and Stringer Bell like this. -

I would be surprised if Tannehill crumbles under pressure, just because that was actually one of his biggest positives at Texas A&M. His management and instincts in the pocket were good. He took very few sacks. It was his processing of the football field in a timely fashion, and finishing off with an accurate throw...those were the issues. But some of those issues were mechanical, e.g. locking his front leg.
As a player that was still "young" (in career, not necessarily age), you'd hope he is still an ascending guy, and that fundamental and mechanical issues could still be worked on and could improve in quick spurts. -
This has me even more excited to be able to see our week 2 preseason game against carolina in person. Should see a heavy dose of TanneTHRILL on the field!!!
