My impression of Vontae watching the show is that his problems are attributable to something that will never change. This isn't something he has control over, like a conscious choice to give less effort or to slack off. This is a problem generated by something he has very little if any control over, and has very little if any likelihood of changing.

In other words, he's not just a swift kick in the *** away from maximizing his talent. He's a major personality overhaul away.

 

It seemed to me like Ireland sold Philbin on trading Vontae. Just my perception of it.

 

I like how your third and first sentences are essentially the same thing :lol: but I agree. Some people don't even realize they aren't giving all they could be. I don't think he means to be lazy.

When Vontae was pushed he failed.

 

Usually when a Dolphin gets traded or leaves via FA, I hope they suck.

This is one of the rare times I wish an ex-Dolphins the best.

He had the tendency to be an idiot, lazy, whatever. But the guy is sincere. AND he made more plays than anyone else in our secondary the past 3 years.

 

...which speaks well of Philbin's judgment, since that's accurate IMO.

He's probably not a good fit for any team on which maturity and personal responsibility are emphasized, i.e., any team that's expecting its players to be responsible, professional adults.

 

He reacted with pretty much the same kind of lack of maturity that made him problematic in the first place. Maybe you might wanna wait to call Grandma?

 

He went on to coach the 2004 NBA champion Pistons. I don't see your point.

My views of Vontae did change. I thought he was more of a sure thing than he was. He may have been allowed to meander by the previous coaching regime. That may have set him back. He was getting by on more talent than training and discipline.

No. There was a change in the pecking order. Philbin is now in charge.

 

His lack of maturity doesn't seem like an intentional lack of maturity or one due to not trying to grow up. Makes it seem unlikely he'll change, but at the same time makes it difficult not to root for the kid or feel for him.

 

In Vontae's defense for trying to interrupt the conversation to call his grandma, when Jeff Ireland told Vontae that he just traded him to the Colts, that meant Jeff Ireland is no longer his boss.

 

That actually wouldn't be a bad strategy if you feel strongly that you're working with a guy who will never change, will probably undermine the other team, and for whom you can get something good in return from a division rival. You'd weaken them in more ways than one.

And if that was the thought that made him feel calling his grandmother was okay in the middle of that meeting, he has even bigger problems.

 

Ireland might no longer be his boss, but his new boss might not like watching his new player interrupt a meeting with his old GM so he can make a phone call. :dunno:
