If you chart head coach personalities under the MBTI personality typing index and the MMPI psychologicial test onto a scattersplot graph with win lost records weighted to give playoff wins 2X weighting (as in a playoff win is worth two regular season wins) and Superbowl wins at 3X then you will find absolutely nothing.

 

I don't know if he can..I don't have the same conviction I do about motivating a team like I would a Harbaugh or a Cowher, but I'm ready to see it more this season and whether he can motivate this team enough to post more wins than last..

There's real adversity right now, you don't play like that at home and not question motivation.

:lol: Priceless. I really like the fact that when we were 3-0 he was not all caught up in the hype, but more down to earth and recognizing we had/have a lot to work on.

 

I'm convinced that Miami Dolphins fans would question whether Bill Walsh could motivate a team. I'd imagine that most on here are too young to really appreciate Walsh's coaching. Bill was the most cerebral coach I believe I have ever seen. He wasn't a rah rah guy. You were not going to hear him in the locker room saying stuff like "who has it better than we do?". He was a guy that constant coached and expected his players to be able to motivate themselves.

As far as personality, Joe Philbin is as close to Bill Walsh as any coach I've seen.

 

I think Philbin is very collected and professional. These kinds of losses would rattle even the most stoic characters, and he has never lost it or said something he later would regret. His personality is not up for questioning.

Their personalities may be similar but that appears to be it. Walsh revolutionized the game and was also a highly successful college coach before getting the Niners job.

Thus far Phibin seems to me like any run if the mill, average coach. He's certainly not horrible, but I've yet to see him do anything that made me think he could be a top 5-10 coach in this league

 

We've been in every game other than the Saints game. We've been prepared, I don't think Philibin coaches players to turn the ball over or give up sacks we've been in position to win every game but the Saints game, I don't think Philibin is a bad coach at all. I think the failure to get talent on the offensive line and to develop a running game is killing us right now.

The best coach in the modern era has one of the most serious personality disorders I have ever seen. He comes off as soulless as they come

Yes. Bill revolutionized the game with his offense.

He was also 8-24 in his first two seasons in San Francisco. He had two years of experience as a college head coach prior to getting the San Francisco job.

I'm not trying to compare the two as far as their coaching goes, but it is a fact that fans in today's game would be calling for Bill Walsh's head after his second season.

Right now, I'm not sure what we are looking for when Joe Philbin gets this kind of criticism. When this team was 3-0, there was none. That's the general M.O. of fans though. When times are good, they keep their mouths shut. When times are bad, they look for someone to blame.

Joe Philbin took over a bad football team when he took this job. What he has done in his 1+ years is show that he can prepare the team to play the game, and his staff typically makes good adjustments through the course of the game.

Miami is currently 3-3 not because Joe Philbin is just an average coach, but because this team has had poor roster management for years. Bill Parcells was right about one thing when he took the Miami job back in 2008. This is a talent acquisition business. That's a simplistic view, because it's more than about getting talent. It's about getting talent that fits.

This off-season is a good example. Mike Wallace didn't fit, but he was signed because of the perceived need to have a deep threat receiver. Joe may have signed off on the move, and if he did on his own, then that's his mistake. However, I think Joe simply went along because it was decided above him that this is what the team will do.

You are actually wrong about that. Bill Walsh was VERY MUCH a Rah Rah guy. He would also constantly instigate fake controversy in order to motivate his players.

Having said that....Talent above all else. Philbin can win 6 Super Bowls in a row with the right talent. In fact...about 15 coaches can.

 

That's his front, watch a documentary on him while he coaches players, then you understand.

Sorry Rock, human beings, few football players are intrinsically motivated to accomplish individual achievements, if that's what it's about, you will always fail as a team, or stay at an average level, they all want to okay for something bigger themselves, they all want to be considered warriors..

Playing for yourself will only take your so far...players want to play for their fans, they want to play for an identity as a team, they want to be a group assassins, tapping into that mindset is part of coaching, motivating your team to play for one another, to kill for each other is critically important.

 

I assume we're talking about Belicek..the man is a great coach and I mean that in the most literal sense..it's about the way he communicates to his players that is special.

I agree with this. With him it's all entirely about the team. If you aren't benefiting the team then you are gone. The players who outlive their usefulness are cut quickly. I think the success comes from the buy in the players have. Look at Brady structuring his contract to allow others to get paid. The coaches attitude has formed that team first mentality.

He is undoubtedly a great coach. The greatest coach ever IMO to be able to do what he's done in a post salary cap era, and to do what he did with a QB that hasn't taken a snap since High School (2008 Patriots being 11-5).

I do not doubt that he communicates very well with his players on how to do their jobs. I do not necessarily think this quality assumes that he has a personality.

Some of my greatest mentors, teachers, professors were socially inept weirdos that lacked any type of personality, sense of humor etc. I'd go as far to say that if they saw a psychiatrist that a couple of them would be diagnosed with a personality disorder
