Defensively however, I don’t believe it addresses the defensive trenches. Teams literally ran the ball down our throats last season. If we can’t stop the run at the LOS, it’s not going to matter what we did offensively.
I’m not expecting one draft and offseason FA signings to fix all of our issues, but one thing is for certain, one of these sides of the ball need to see dramatic improvement over last season in order to keep fans excited about Flores.Hooligan likes this. -
I am far more of a realist than I am a idealist. The fact of the matter is that it is almost a certainty that we will selecting a QB with our first pick.
I would say the odds currently are:
Tua - 60%
Herbert - 20%
Love - 15%
Other (Likely Bridgewater) - 5%
Rosen is probably going to be relegated to a project. Ideally, he would show enough growth to be a full-time backup for whoever we draft this year next year.
Realistically, I could see Rosen be a trade candidate just due to roster numbers.
I could also see the Dolphins drafting two QBs. If Hurts is around in the middle rounds, I could see us using him as backup/gadget guy. I have long wondered why more teams don't target running QBs as backups. I feel like a mobile backup is probably a better option than a more traditional backup if you needed to start a backup for a 2 game stretch. -
I still wouldn't be shocked to see us take Hurts or a prospect in the later rounds, but I don't think we go 1st round QB at all this year. This front office is all about value and we can win with Fitzpatrick in 2020 AND have another stellar draft class in 2021. I really think that will be the path.The_Dark_Knight and Hooligan like this. -

Relying on a guy who was perhaps the worst QB in football over the past two years in Rosen or the guy who consistently shows complete inconsistency in Fitz is setting yourself up for a disaster and a new coaching regime. Ross wants a new face to the franchise, and neither of those two guys are it.Pauly likes this. -
Again, that doesn't mean we don't draft a QB, but folks have to let go of this idea that we have to have a QB right now or we've failed somehow. We have an entire team to rebuild and the QB room is in a lot better shape than the offensive line, D line and secondary. Fitzpatrick is almost definitely the starter for the majority of 2020 regardless unless we grab a QB in free agency. -
The bottom line is that we are in position to draft a QB now. Next year ... who knows. You take the QB when you can.Pauly likes this. -
You're also right about Fitzpatrick likely to regress...there's no way he can play like he did against NE for an entire season. But that's okay as well, we don't need him to be a superstar week in and week out. Hopefully we refill our depleted roster, beef up the trenches and get enough pieces in place to where we can stop the run, move the ball more consistently and get away from that Tannehill-like offense where we ask our QB to consistently bail us out on 3rd and long.
That wasn't sustainable and never will be because we were too lopsided on talent, and these next two seasons are our chance to finally break that trend and build a team from the ground up...the right way (I hate to say this, but the Patriots way). That's young players on their 1st/2nd contract on the cheap...no more bloated contracts that essentially should be distributed across 3-4 players. You do that by trading out talent at their peak, getting value and reinvesting those picks in more young talent. I can see clearly what they're trying to do and it does not include trading up...I can 100% guarantee that. -
I will add though that even IF Delpit and Baun are gone when we pick those selections there are other Edge Rushers and Safeties that would absolutely meet our needs there. We are in great shape in terms of where we pick and ways to improve ourselves.Last edited: Mar 9, 2020Puka-head and texanphinatic like this. -
It has yet to really be duplicated elsewhere, and I think that's for a reason. I don't mind borrowing elements of it, but as a whole? No, Flores has to forge his own path, not try to blindly copy what someone else done. Ideally, coming from that system, he is equipped to pick and choose the best pieces to mold to his own philosophy in building a winner. Trying to stick to the true and full Patriot Way will have us more like last year's iteration of the Lions - a team misuing and shedding talent and getting worse every year instead of better. -

I think building a good roster gives you room for error for not hitting a HOF or top 5 QB. Plus a lot of great QB’s fall to the last half of the first round. -

Furthermore the Patriot way for that team proves the point that if you have a great coach, a great system and a deep roster you can win 11 games a season without an elite QB
I like Tua and I will be happy if we get him 5th overall. But if we do not... and we kill it in the draft and sign players like Thuney and make a trade for a offensive lineman... and With Fitz win 11 games next year... I will be overjoyed.
And I challenge anyone here to say that they would be upset at that outcome!!!
I trust Flores to coach up Rosen and develop whatever young QB they take in this draft... Even if that QB is Anthony Gordon or Jalen Hirts.mlb1399 likes this. -

I think my main hope for next season is simple- have someone other than the Pats win the AFC East plus have us finish around the .500 mark (or better). We need reasons for Belichek and Adams to retire and that alone will be a big part of future AFC East dominance. -
