They want to roid up and rip each others heads off for my entertainment ...I'm in.
As long as they are making informed decisions and it's consensual.
As far as anything else goes, as long as no laws are broken it's nun ya biz.
And Marijuana is medicine so they should stop testing for that immediately. It's like Tylenol for reals.muskrat21 likes this. -

Once upon a time, the Head Coach was God and players were subservient to them. There was no doubt who was in charge and as a player, you felt fortunate to be playing in the NFL. Granted, players salaries were garbage and many players had to take jobs in the offseason but once football season started, you did as the coach said, bottom line.
Then the players went on strike, wanting better pay, less stringent off season camps and the roles in teams are now reversed. Coach is no longer God and he can’t make me do this, that or the other because the union negotiated it.
I think the compromise is simple...you want these multimillion dollar contracts? Then whatever the coach says goes, bottom line. If you want to pout about it there are other players out there that are willing to put up with it for half of what you’re making.
If camps went back to being tough like they used to be, I guarantee you there wouldn’t be near as many injuries as we see today because these players would be toughened up during camp
Just my opinion, of course I could be wrongIrishman likes this. -

Shula was actually scared of Jake Scott. Butch and Sundance were literal hellions in and out of the locker room.
I think our notion of NFL head coaches are shaped by our romanticized experiences with high school and maybe college coaches and Hollywood. In the NFL, it is and always has been different.Irishman and Nappy Roots like this. -
I know I’m not gonna be the guy that bets against Raekwon.. dude takes football way to serious to fail so with the talent he does I’m happy with him.

I think the AAF is example enough of the emptiness of the threat.
Further, the money is paid to the players because of the obscene money the league brings in. If you aren't paying players, then owners just pocket the money and why the **** should we care for or encourage that?Nappy Roots likes this. -

...What was I doing again? Oh yeah.
Doesn't smoking pot screw up your short term memory?...
...I was doing something. I just can't remember what it was. Oh that's right.

The bottom line point is that Coach [Insert Name Here] is expected to field a championship contender team. Any team who doesn't have their eye on the Lombardi Trophy as the ultimate goal for their season doesn't deserve to play, but that in itself is another argument. The point however is you want your head coach to train and lead his team to that championship game. It's his job that's ultimately on the line, so the league in general holds the head coach responsible and yet at the same time, ties his hands behind his back. You can't do this, you can't do that and if you even try to, you're going to be severely disciplined.
With the rules that are in place today, not even Don Shula would be successful in his heyday of the early 70's because he wouldn't be able to do any of the things in today's offseason that he was able to do then. -

Some developing players would probably love to get in extra time with the coaches. I'm not saying run them through walls, but like I said there has to be some middle ground.Irishman likes this. -

I'm talking more about the inability to communicate directly at times due to league off-season rules. It is there to pryotect the players in a sense but I feel like there might be a better way for players who actually want that communication without coaches abusing it. -

Demanding more practice, player subservience, "toughness", griping about player pay (and you were) etc ... this is all very much "old man yells at cloud" type of stuff that just isn't going to happen. For many, (especially youth/advertising targets) the game is as interesting and exciting as it has ever been. Is my viewership changed positively by having some 1960's Steelers routine go down in the offseason? No. Things change. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not, but they change, they move forward. Railing against it can be cathartic, but ultimately it won't accomplish much other than make some whippersnapper like me roll their eyes for a few years until it's my turn to tell those damn kids to turn down their music. :up:Nappy Roots likes this.
