Dolphins 2019 Football Off-Season Workouts/Veteran Mini-Camp

Off season rules are a joke..

I'm intrigued, is there anything to stop them from say doing the 4 hours and then all leaving the premises, crossing the street and getting some actual football stuff sorted? Like lets say all the linebackers met up for lunch with their coach and he went over the stuff he wanted them to get to grips with before the footballs came out in the team practices, and then the linebackers went off as a group and worked on it? Can the NFL smack you down for that as it's an obvious skirting of the rules?

In the CBA, the owners really, really need to just let the players do drugs in order to win back better practice time with the coaches.

I say let them do whatever they want. They are getting paid 100s of thousands or millions of $$$.
They want to roid up and rip each others heads off for my entertainment ...I'm in.
As long as they are making informed decisions and it's consensual.

As far as anything else goes, as long as no laws are broken it's nun ya biz.

And Marijuana is medicine so they should stop testing for that immediately. It's like Tylenol for reals.

I bolded the only "illegal" part of your idea- coaches cannot directly talk to players about anything football related. But if the coach went to lunch with the equipment manager, who happened to talk to the linebackers afterwards, then you're technically not breaking any rules if those linebackers went and practiced on their own.

Once upon a time, the Head Coach was God and players were subservient to them. There was no doubt who was in charge and as a player, you felt fortunate to be playing in the NFL. Granted, players salaries were garbage and many players had to take jobs in the offseason but once football season started, you did as the coach said, bottom line.

Then the players went on strike, wanting better pay, less stringent off season camps and the roles in teams are now reversed. Coach is no longer God and he can’t make me do this, that or the other because the union negotiated it.

I think the compromise is simple...you want these multimillion dollar contracts? Then whatever the coach says goes, bottom line. If you want to pout about it there are other players out there that are willing to put up with it for half of what you’re making.

If camps went back to being tough like they used to be, I guarantee you there wouldn’t be near as many injuries as we see today because these players would be toughened up during camp

Camps are easier because the NFL wanted to keep control of being judge juror and executioner of the players. They threw earlier practices do that they could put in their draconian justice system

I don't think that's true. If any coach was a god, it was Shula, and numerous players were out of control during his heyday.

Shula was actually scared of Jake Scott. Butch and Sundance were literal hellions in and out of the locker room.

I think our notion of NFL head coaches are shaped by our romanticized experiences with high school and maybe college coaches and Hollywood. In the NFL, it is and always has been different.
