Ross is talking like a rebuild for this team. If that's the case we could be looking for a QB in 2020 and might mean trading players for picks etc. That might be likely even if we don't aim for a high-end 2020 QB.
Which players do you not want to lose and which ones are you happy to move on from?

You absolutely keep Howard. There is no reason he can't be a HUGE factor on defense moving forwards.
Rebuild doesn't mean everyone has to go. You try and keep your pieces that have future value.Phil Hutchings, mbsinmisc, Tin Indian and 2 others like this. -

I'm not underselling on guys like Howard or Drake. If someone blows you away (say, a pair of first rounders for Howard), then sure you make the move. Otherwise, they stay.
Rather, we are going to see guys like Branch and Quinn getting the boot. We may end up with a lot of dead cap money this year, but if we can end up with a good amount of cash for 2020 and get a QB either this draft or in 2020 we should set up nicely.
Rebuilds in the NFL aren't the laborious process they once were. Clear out dead weight, stock draft picks, set a core and move.djphinfan likes this. -
Howard, Drake, Grant and Jones I would definitely not trade. We've traded away or cut too many key players anyway.
The others listed should go, especially Tannehill and Alonzo whether you can trade them away or not.Surfs Up 99 and KeyFin like this. -
With those picks you will be lucky to get players who even add up to what we already have. There is no age issue either.
You'd basically have to offer me the moon.KeyFin likes this. -
The only young guy the Phins should let walk is Devante Parker, and his contract is up anyway.

Howard must stay. We have a young pro bowler at a very key position. You don’t trade that.

I am so excited! I love the new direction of the team!!

Keep the young talent and move on from old/expensive contracts. Please please please do not move on from Howard! I want Parker gone immediately, we know what that princess is.

i think rebuild/ retool depends on the coach. If you get an older vet type of coach you might just want to retool. If you get a new young coach with little experience its probably best to blow it up and start over. At the end of the day though it will be the coach's decision I assume.

I'd be shocked if we don't end up like Arizona. A one and done HC, while we blow it up, and start over in 2020 with a better class of QB and coach candidates to work off of as alot of these current young inexperienced co-ordinators get more established and experienced to be considered for HC roles.
Time will tell, either way though, I suspect 2019 will be a rough year for us as fans.KeyFin likes this. -
yeah maybe parker will learn to catch with a new coach!!!!!
lol you guys are true dolphin fans if you think parker will get better with a new coach... the guy straight drops passes, that should be a simple catch.GARDENHEAD, mbsinmisc and Tin Indian like this. -
Early quick thoughts... and I'm no sure on the actual contract status of any of these guys... more so whether I'd like them around or not.
STAY:
Howard
Drake
Ballage
Grant
Wilson
Stills (only because he can be a deep threat)
Baker
Godchaux
Tunsil
GONE:
Alonso
Tannehill
Parker
Wake (deal is up, right? He likely won't be re-signed)
Quinn
Hayes
Harris (keep him as an inexpensive depth body, but no second deal)
James
Everyone else, I can see go either way, or I just don't care enough about to mention at this pointLast edited: Dec 31, 2018texanphinatic likes this. -
Glad someone said Alonso. He's actually not been terrible, but that cheap shot attempt on Allen? **** that guy, get out, we don't need players doing that cheap ****.
Stills ... maybe see if you can renegotiate, but I do feel he is the kind of player that the team wants overall. -
We shouldn't stop at firing just a few people. Full re-build means we need to start unloading all available assets that won't be around to help in 2-3 years when we may become relevant again.

If I’m Grier I call 31 other teams and let them know everyone is for sale to gauge interest.
If I can get higher value than I think my players are worth them I make moves..constantly evaluating, that’s the job.adamprez2003, DolfanR, Pauly and 2 others like this. -
The nucleus of this team should be:
Minkah, Howard, McCain, Tunsil
We should only be looking to shed older and more expensive guys. I don't think we should bounce someone like Drake, but I also think we should continue to draft RBs. I think that it is a position that we don't need to spend a lot in. I think Ballage will be pretty solid. For what it's worth, I like Benny Snell if he is available as a mid round pick. -
I think Ross's statement is simply meaning that he will not bring in older free agents to fill out the team. He recognizes the injury risks. As far as guys on this team who stays and who goes I'd have to think about that and not shoot from the cuff except one guy.
Devante Puddin' Pop Parker. -

Honestly, I’m tired of trading away good young players because we’re rebuilding or they don’t fit the coach of that years personna.
Howard, Fitz, Drake, Tunsil, Godchaux, Wilson and Stills are a solid core group of players. Ballage, McCain, Baker and McMillan could develop.
What we need is to hit on a couple of drafts. One good pick at QB and a couple of good OL and this team can compete. It’s hard to truly evaluate how good or bad our defense is because our offense was so bad and couldn’t keep them off the field.
I think you continue to not go after the mega deal players and see if you can sign a solid to good starter at OL/DL and spend some picks at Qb, OL and DL over the next two years.Surfs Up 99 and Tin Indian like this. -
No more stop-gaps at line- that alone has dictated the 8-8 seasons for the past 18 years.mbsinmisc and Surfs Up 99 like this. -
Why would anyone suggest to trade Xavien? That would just create another hole to fill you buffoon. Not to mention he just had a pro bowl level season.

I'd pay him like the top corner in football and call it a day personally. You don't give up young talent for talent you hope is half as good.
The only way would be if you absolutely CANT structure the contract in a way that works.Tin Indian, Dol-Fan Dupree, mlb1399 and 2 others like this. -
I wouldn't even trade Xavien for the 1st overall pick in this draft.
I might consider a trade for say.. Carson Wentz. But even that is shaky cause he could have been a one year wonder QB. He could also be injury prone.
As far as contract extensions go, if Chris Grier is worth his salt he should be able to sit down with him and hammer out a fair deal for X and ourselves.KeyFin, mbsinmisc and Phin McCool like this. -
My take on this has a few layers to it when it comes to X..
1, I don’t like it when a players comes out publicly and says what he said..
2, not sure he’s smart enough to understand that.
3, everyone who is not an elite qb has a price tag when you are in reset mode, and they are up for contract....that price is gonna be inordinately high for the players I want to keep.Brasfin and Surfs Up 99 like this. -

Our defense is an absolute joke and some of you are talking about trading one of the blessings we do have on defense?
Unbelievable -
-
I’m not discounting the importance of having a GOOD quarterback, not one bit but some of you put way too much stock in JUST the quarterback. If it was JUST the quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and others whose horns have been rooted over recent history would be in the playoffs and not at home watching them like the rest of us.
I’ve told you all time and time again, offense wins games, defense wins championships which is why the Chiefs are not going to the dance...neither are the Saints. They don’t have the defense.
If we throw away what defensive talent we have to sell the kitchen sink for a quarterback, we’ll return to the days of Marino. Sure we’ll win lots of games and even make the playoffs but won’t makyit to the dance. We need to get back to the days of Griese, Czonka and smasmouth defense like the Bears and Ravens have done.
