If Jake Long resigns will his dead money still count?

 

I don't of all the teams, but $3 million is really pretty low. Last year Miami had slightly over $19 million...The Colts over $38 million, Cowboys $30 million, Raiders $28.

This will be an interesting off season to see how Ireland manages contracts. Sign a couple of big name free agents with large signing bonuses and Miami could easily find themselves in salary cap hell again in a couple of years. That is why building through the draft makes so much nowadays imo.

 

I'm not sure it's correct Long would have any dead cap space. His contract was voided because of his snap % as a rookie, he's not cut or traded or anything.

It doesn't matter how the contract is voided. If there is any remaining unamortized signing bonus it becomes dead space. In 2009 Jake restructured his contract and got a $8.0 million bonus. That bonus was amortized over 5 years and $1.6 million per year was counted against the cap over the past 4 years. So they still have $1.6 million left to count against the cap, regardless of what happens with Jake.

I understand what you are saying but boy howdy if we have little cap room and then if this is a bad draft class this wont be a recipe for success .

several people are saying that this is going to be possibly be a bad draft and since the fins put themsleves in the midle of the peckking order I can see better teams jumpingahead of us making themselves even better while the teams below us jump ahead of us in talent as well . I just hope We sign a couple of playmakers with some more speed as well.

The figure he is quoted is the amount of dead cap ie the amount of cap space taken up by players no longer on the team. So a small number is a good thing. In terms of cap space the Phins have one of the largest amounts of free space in the league which should enable us to compete with anyone for a player's service should we choose.

 

I think it would be a philosophical question whether or not it would be considered "dead money" at that point because "dead money" tends to imply money spent on a player no longer on the team.

I think a lot of people associate dead money as being caused by players no longer on the team but it does include players like Jake (assuming he is resigned). It's easier to think of it in terms of contracts as oppose to players.

 

The Dolphins can free up even more cap space by releasing Richard Marshall-Dimitri Patterson-Dan Carpenter-Richie Incognito. Releasing those four players saves $15 million against the cap. Food for thought;

 

And then that money will be spent by filling those holes you just created.

 

It's crazy. Talk about overpaid.
