If there is no cap in 2010, then is there a way to cut a player who has a long term, big dollar contract (let's say til 2013 or something) and avoid the cap hit if the cap is re-instated later for 2011?

2010 could be a great chance to cut any 'mistakes' we've made on big-dollar, long term contracts.

Any suggestions whom we would let go if this is the case?

Is Jason Allen still playing at his rookie pay level, or did he take a cut? If not, hes got to come down. As nice as hes been on special teams, you dont spend first round rookie money on a 4th string DB and ST ace.

Smiley, Wilson and Ginn are the most likely casualties, though I can see them staying. Porter has a shot of going as well.

 

From everything I have read, that seems to be the case. I was on the "No new CBA is going to suck" bandwagon for a while, but if that is indeed true, I'm all for it. Will be a great opportunity to cut mistakes like Wilson, Ginn, and Crowder. Will also be able to cut other guys who make more cash than they're really worth, and are replaceable. Wouldn't be surprised to see Smiley go either. As good as he's been, he just can't stay healthy.

 

Being able to clear out those bad contracts would be fantastic. I've seen enough of Gibril Wilson.

 

I think people need to reevaluate Teddy Ginn, and the risk reward ratio of keeping him...I dont think the Phins would be saving nearly as much money as you think...and keeping him through at least training camp and having him compete for a spot really doesnt impact the Phins negatively.

Removing a guy just because you think hes a bust, is great on Madden...but you need to look at the whole picture before you do it in the real world.

 

If Joey Porter is on this team next year, I might gouge my eyes out.

I see absolutely no reason to keep him. He brings nothing more to this team than a Charlie Anderson (besides a distraction)

I don't expect Ginn to be gone. It just doesn't make sense financially and it's not like he's a problem child. I keep seeing posts by many people that have him at the top of their lists, but that's purely an emotional reaction. It's like reading catty posts from an all chicks group. (apologies to our female members). I expect and hope that the FO will approach all of the off season decisions with a bit more logic.

you shouldnt have guys on the field making $400,000 playing with guys who make $15,000,000.

suppose we draft another low production first rounder, who is out shined by an undrafted rookie free agent. i think its horse ****. i dont even want to know what ted ginn makes compared to what devon bess makes.

rookies should not be getting these huge ridiculous contracts. veterans should make more then rookies. you cant ask proven veterans to take a pay cut when you are handing out fortunes to college kids and gambling on their potential success.

i cant believe we have the 2nd highest payroll in the league when 3/4 of our roster would be lucky to make another teams practice squad.

all paychecks ought to be based on performance, not where you were chosen in the draft. the draft shouldnt guarantee any money. if your a first round pick, you should take pride in the fact that you were in such demand. then, if you suck, you have to go out and find a real job.

I would also urge people not to put all your stock in salaries. Those don't include bonuses I believe, atleast how the Sentinel is reporting them.

 

We also had about $20M worth of a cap hit on IR between Pennington, Brown, Allen, and Ferguson.

 

It also looks like they are just including the entire signing bonus of both Carey and Grove instead of just the prorated portion. A little misleading.

 

Gibril Wilson is the 3rd highest paid safety in the NFL?? The Dolphins seriously need to fix all this, we have some of the most insanely overpaid players in the nfl and they suck. Instead of spending $$$ on someone like a pro bowler like Boldin we spend $$$ on sh*t. Nice.

 

It is a bit misleading. There are alot of new, bloated contracts on this team with bonuses probably factored in. You guys have already mentioned Wilson and Smiley.

We also have Ginn (#9 Pick), Brown (#2) and Jake Long's (#1 Pick) huge rookie contracts on the books. Not to mention Jason Allen, who is a ST'er at this point.

I'm not surpised it's that high, actually.

Pennington, Brown and Ginn's actual #s should be lower, since they had potential earnings that they will not recieve initially charged to the CAP (the way i read 'not likely to be earned' CAP #s)

From this you can potentially see a lot of changes come next year ....

Pennington (contract is up), Ginn (Trade), CAM (Trade), Smiley, Carey (Trade), Ayodele, Torbor, Porter, W Allen (trade), J Allen, Bell and Wilson could all be on the cut line based off of their CAP #s ..... maybe even Anderson ....

 

Why is it misleading? This isn't a salary cap article. It's salary. I.e. money paid out this year. Both Carey and Grove signed this year, their signing bonus is included.

 

Because if you look at money paid this year, it always have the most recent signings at the top. To characterize Bell and Wilson as second and third highest paid safeties is deceiving, because there are plenty of other safeties who are playing out larger contracts.

1) GinnJr. (is a very expensive bust) hope we can get something for him
2) Joey Porter will not be missed w/Taylor & Wake
3) Yeremiah Bell is expendable, w/ keep Wilson. don't need two starting SS's.
4) Smiley is on a slippery slope due to injuries & salary
5) hope not, but could lose Ronnie if he doesn't negotiate down w/ his contract
6) Pennington is history & there goes the fat....
I would not be surprised to see some changes in the coaching roster.

I am not predicting one of the calls I've made. Learned enough over the years to never second guess the BigTuna. Personally, I know many fans are disappointed in the season but I am not. I know we are on the right road & will be a perennial contender starting in 2010. I see the season as a plus & have enjoyed watching it develop. We will Contend in 2010.

Well unlike baseball that is such a narrow window for max and min spending, that this story is really, meh.

 

This article is VERY misleading. It's showing a signing bonus in this year, as opposed to the pro-rated deal. Mondo corrected it today. It was pure BS.
