He was one of my favorites this coaching cycle, and I'm glad they got him.
He is likely to run something along the line of Wade Phillips defense.

I'm still not understanding what the plan is for hiring so many first time everythings.Finster likes this. -
I know there will be a ton of talk about Suh converting to a 3-4 if that's the defense Joseph designs, but a Wade Phillips 3-4 attacking scheme could be very interesting with Suh in it. I wouldn't be too excited if it was a 3-4 read and react where he'd occupy blockers.

Either way, gotta see what happens first though I agree it does create some worries on the surface.Rock Sexton likes this. -

Seriously , Joseph could not be contacted until today beause of tampering fears. Having said that we got our first choice ...again. It was Joseph all the way all along IMO.

As Disgustipate alluded to in the OP, I think we're MUCH more likely to see a Wade Phillips defense being brought to Miami than we are a reincarnation of Kevin Coyle and the Zimmer scheme. Here's a good general video with Joseph running the Phillips' 3-4 while with the Texans.

Is the WP style a hybrid? a 4-3 under, or a 3-4 base???
I saw per the video it starts as a cover2 shell...but wondering beyond that personnel wise, is it a 4-3 or a 3-4 or a hybrid of the two? -

DE - Coples, Shelby, Fede
NT - Phillips, Mitchell, Coleman
DT - Suh, TBD
WLB - Vernon, Moore
ILB - Jenkins, Hewitt
ILB - Sheppard, Vigil
SLB - Misi, Wake*
*Wake I think you just naturally kind of move him to a pass-rush specialist role for sub packages. Miami's going to need to invest in a long, lean DE type, and a LOT at LB. -
RE: Ndamukong Suh - one of the "DE" spots in the video is someone playing 3-technique, which is predominantly what Suh's played. It's a one-gap scheme so I don't think there's much worry about Suh sitting as a 5-technique and 2-gapping. He's a fit, and his position doesn't change much, IMO. You can still move him where you want him.
Miami's going to need a pass-rush OLB, if they don't re-sign Vernon, a 4/5/6 technique end, unless they think Coples and Fede can do it, assuming they don't re-sign Shelby, a bigger ILB to play next to Jenkins (not Vigil or Hewitt or Misi), and I think you look at getting someone like an Ahmad Brooks to play SAM.Rocky Raccoon, Steve-Mo and Brasfin like this. -

Without getting to deep into it, and I defined Culture in another thread, It is hard to establish a culture of winning when you have little idea what it looks like. If he was the DC during those times it would be differnt, but he wasnt he was a position coach. In the 10 yr NFL career of VJ he has been on 1 team that had a winning record and that was in Texas with Gary Kubiak - 12-4 and 10-6. Most of the defense he was with with the exception of 1 yr in San Fran and the two years in Texas regressed or where stagnet.
I'll give the guy a chance but I will not be holding my breath -
good get.

I just dont understand this whole hot commodity thing with Gace and Joseph. If they were or are so hot why have they each been with so many teams. Teams that have not been good to boot.
It is no secret our Defense has a lot of issues. Just not sure a guy with only DB positional exp is the answer. -

Honest question, if any or all of these coaches fail, will you really be less upset because you chose not to be positive about it? For me, a loss sucks just as much if I expected it or I didn't.
If you're going to get the lows of when your team tanks, why deprive yourself of hope? I mean whats the point of being a fan if you're miserable all the time.Sceeto likes this. -
