Dolphins: Miami leaning towards 3-4
The News
The Miami Dolphins made it clear to several rookies interviewed at the NFL Scouting Combine that they will be predominately a 3-4 defense, so expect any draft picks to have plenty of experience in that scheme, according to USA Today. That seems to rule out defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, who isn't considered to be strong enough to occupy two bodies at the nose spot and not quite fast enough to come off the edge. Virginia's defensive end Chris Long is believed to be the frontrunner for Miami's top choice, not only because he's used to Bill Parcells' methods via Cavaliers' coach Al Groh - a Parcells' disciple - but he also has the smarts and measurables to play in any system.
Our View
The Miami coaching staff hasn't tipped their hand yet, but this report and one we posted yesterday makes it sound like they will implement the 3-4 as their base scheme. Stay tuned.

This may be the NFL's worst-kept secret.

true, no real surprises here. As a result of this and our two aging OLBs, Chris Long or Vernon Gholston are the most likely picks. But if you really believe Jake Long can be a great LT, then he must be very close.
-
Yeah, not leaning towards a 3-4... we are playing a 3-4 this year. Pretty much certain at this point, unless there is a change in policy.

Leaning... did you say "Leaning?"
From all that we have seen, to say that the Dolphins are "leaning" toward the 3-4 is like a tabloid leaning toward saying Nicole Ritchie is a "little bit pregnant." I love what my daughter sends me by wire - weird it is.
As much as I don't like the 3-4 defense, it is more than apparently what the P-I-S triumvirate (I gotta find a new anacronym for that one) are going to run as the Dolphins Defense, unless they just love to have a whole defense made of huge D lineman and large LB. I won't rant about it forever, but I'd much rather see a base 4-3, with a touch of the old 5-3. I wouldn't even mind seeing a 2-5 defense. Two DT, and 5 LB - Taylor, Crowder, Torbor, Porter, and Long lined up as LB - guess who's coming to dinner. But, I digress. That will probably never happen. -
I dont think it is a given they run it this year, but in the future? Absolutely.

And in other news today, it turns out that Shaquille O'neal IS taller than Wes Welker. More details will come in as we monitor this shocking development.

Hold on, I just received news about developments of Shaq and Welker's height difference. We bring you out to ThePhins.com correspondant jdang307.

Hearing the rumors about the 3-4 reminds me of the first Matrix movie when Agent Smith asks Neo about the sound of inevitability. Based on the personnel we've brought in this offseason, it's clear we're going to be running it, it's just a matter of whether it's some type of "hybrid" or a true 3-4.

In my opinion, the fact that word was getting out about the Dolphins interviewing all their potential draft targets about the 3-4 might have been tipping their hand. As a result, other teams could better guess who we would (and wouldn;t) be taking.
I think this is just a smokescreen to keep people guessing before the draft.
Honestly, it would be idiotic to draft and sign players with no clue what system you want to run/want them to suit. Waiting until camps to decide??? Once most of your personnel are locked??
I don't believe it.

[just kidding, Simon. he *is* a cute lil tyke though, isn't he? did I mention he's an orphan? Are you *still* going to say he can't rule Dorsey out? Are you going to be a mean man?] -
I'm not even sure what they mean about targeting guys with "experience" in the 3-4. How many college players have experience in the 3-4? Better yet, how many NFL players on 3-4 defenses played it in college? That's just nonsensical speculation on their part.

And if we get Glenn Dorsey and go to a 4-3, I'd be happier than two pigs in a peach orchard!
