More accurately, Chad Henne has been “successfully” coached to never go for the home run. The guy threw the ball all over the field at Michigan. He comes to Miami and suddenly becomes Captain Checkdown? That’s coaching.

And as far as Omar Kelly goes, his opinion can be disregarded without consequence. Were he a Titans beat writer, he’d have claimed the Titans were moving on from Vince Young about seven different times. If the 2011 draft plays out the way I think—the Dolphins drafting two quarterbacks, one relatively high—then Omar will pat himself on the back and say “I told you so” even though that strategy will have more to do with replacing Thigpen and Pennington (both of whom are on expiring contracts) than anything preordained by benching Henne.

 

If they think henne isnt the franchise then i have no problem with the move but we need to get a franchise QB in the NFL draft do what ever it takes to trade up and get Andrew Luck or Ryan Mallet

bs. its been painfully obvious henne is checking down too quickly and not letting plays develop. he's leaviung too many plays on the field. if it was henning's fault sparano and ireland wouldve fired henning like they did bonamego. its their asses on the line after all. unfortunately game film never lies. sparano knows what the plays were supposed to be he knows what the QB was supposed to do. this is the proof of the matter. you have parcells saying before the season that henne isnt developing fast enough, you now have him being benched because he's too conservative for henning and you still want to place blame elsewhere? cmon. we know where the problem lay on offense. run blocking and qb. now we will see where this goes.

and i am not a fan of this move. i would prefer to suffer through henne's growing pains if it was up to me. but since the media is clamoring for the playoffs and the fans want people fired they have gotten what they wished for which is win now at any cost

 

Jake Locker may take a plunge on draft day. Not that I've seen him play but he seems to be dropping on everyone's list for next year's draft.

Newton might come out but he seems to make plays only with his legs.

As a result of the coaching staff changing the way he plays the position to better suit their goals for the position. They basically want a younger Chad Pennington. Remember, we’re running the same offense that Parcells intended Pennington to run when he was drafted by the Jets.

I’d agree with this train of thought if not for Omar Kelly’s tweet about sources telling him the switch to Pennington was made because Sparano couldn’t determine if the offensive problems were the fault of Henne or Henning. It’s easier to bench a quarterback than to make a midseason switch at OC as well as fill the vacancies at other positions left by promotions.

What really bothers me about this move is that Pennington succeeding will tell us nothing about whether or not Henning or Henne was the issue. Pennington has already proven he can execute this offense. Unless Henning keeps calling play action on 3rd and 6 or calls the Wildcat twice in a row, that is.

I wouldn’t say the media is clamoring for playoffs; rather, they’re holding the franchise accountable to its publicly proclaimed goal of making the playoffs and getting to the Super Bowl. Tough not to when the head coach AND team owner both stated those goals at the same time at the same offseason event.

Cam Newton is Vince Young without the “success”. Great in college, won’t do much in the pros. Besides, the Pat White experiment will keep Newton off our draft board. Or should, at least.

its henning's world and you're just living in it. next year we fire sparano and ireland and and henning takes over both duties. henning drafts 400lb linemen and thhree new RBs and unveils the first ever five lineman, six running back offensive system. we will never have to worry about a QB again

 

I feel thats what alot of people are missing in all of this. In his college days this kid threw the ball all over the field, deep down field to Edwards or Manningham an awful lot. Very rarely checked it down to TE's and RB's. Eventhough in those days giving the ball to Mike Hart was never a bad option. Now you can see it in him, its a quick scan of the field, then checkdown. Go ahead and time it, I bet he's always getting rid of that ball in 3-4 seconds. Which, hmm... is precisely what that buzzer clock was set at in TC. So sure, people can make the claim all they want of, "he doesn't let the play develop". Well, when you're coached to get rid of the ball that fast, if you WR has to deal with a jam at the line, guess what, when that initial look to him is made, he's not open, may he be open by the time the QB checks it down? Possibly, but at that point its too late, because you've drilled it into your QB's head that he needs to have gotten rid of the ball by then to avoid a negative play. You want the ball gone fast, you're going to miss some opportunities. It is what it is. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Can pennington maybe do a better job of this, yeah, for sure. Im sure in time though, when things really start to slow down for Henne though, we'd see the same thing. however, you've got to have the patience with that, he's only going to learn to comprehend at game speed, while in the game, not on the bench. Unfortunately a few extra wins this year is more important than the patience to try and develop a QB

 

We don't need to draft a qb we need to trade or acquire a 2-4 year player this franchise can nit wait 4 more years to groom on

This is nothing more than a Kurt Warner/Matt Leinart moment and you are scared that Pennington will pull a Kurt Warner. Unwed yourself from the "Fire Henning" mantra and you might well see the truth. Now do you want to see me cover my bases?

No, no it doesn't. Henne needs a spacing offense. Henning's offense is the complete opposite of a spacing offense. Pennington would do terrible in a spacing offense, and thrive in one like Hennings.

Having Henne in a Henning offense is almost akin to having Tom Brady in an option offense.

Henning isn't that bad of a coordinator when he has HIS players. He's actually quite efficient. Hence Pennington coming in.

This entire move is all about Henning. Its not about anyone else.

 

I've thought about the buzzer having something to do with this issue of Henne's. I wonder how many other teams use a buzzer in training camp to prompt the QB to get rid of the ball quickly?

Yes, this was 10 plays from two games. It was two games versus Ohio State. In the NFL, Chad Henne will play Ohio State EVERY week.

This isn't a post about you or your post. It's a post about the false history some are creating around here. THESE are the plays that Chad Henne has run in college. THESE are the plays that Chad Henne has familiarity. These are the plays with which we should be seeing the most success. Yet I look at these plays and see the same failures.

Wish for all the spread you want. We didn't draft a spread quarterback. Making him a spread quarterback is futile when he has never mastered the play action based offense that he has been running since COLLEGE!

So from the way it sounds, the coaching staff think's that by changing starting QB's, the offense will open up all of a sudden? Sure, there's no denying that Henne has made some poor decisions with the football, but the coaches need to be held accountable to a certain extent as well...

The playcalling has been very weak / predictable, and since we no longer have Ginn{deep threat}, we can't stretch the defense{s} anymore. Looking at the players we have at WR, this passing offense was basically built to play short / underneath / conservative football. At least that's my personal take...

 

Mallett isn't worth what pick ?

I see room for improvement , or need to be accurate , however I see the potential to do so.

So is he worth a draft pick ? Of course , just to determine what draft choice , at what pick level imo.

 

I watched about 80% of Henne's games in college. I think I know what I saw...

He needs an offense that creates spacing with wideouts. Whether he does that from under center or shotgun is irrelevant. I was at the Baltimore game this past sunday. 3 rows from the field. I watched every route the wideouts did in the game. They had 3, 3 ****ING TIMES that Hartline went deep the entire game when he had man coverage the entire game. The entire game we had wideouts running 10-12 yard routes bunched in one area. That does not play to Henne's strengths at ALL.

You need a strong running game and wideouts that are able to attack the defenses aggressively to be successful in PA. Hence Henne being somewhat successful in PA in 2008. Say what you want about Ginn but he caused the ENTIRE field to create spacing for other wideouts.

Levels is what Henne is about. Pennington does not need that.

I dont care for either QB, as long as they help us win. But Henne is Henning's offense will NEVER work. Henning's offense is efficient, but it needs the right QB, and Henne is not that man. So either Henning or Henne is gone next year.

Im fairly confident in what I think is going on...and to be honest...I dont think its very difficult to put the pieces together.

This coaching staff has come to the conclusion NOT that Chad Henne is not the answer for this team in the long term, but that he is NOT the answer with the current offensive system. At this point in the year, at 4 and 4, and really having no room for error, they made what I consider the most logical thing to do. Either you ditch Henning and bring in another OC mid season, and rework how you do things offensively, or you take a QB who has already proven he can win in this system and play him as far into the playoffs he can take you, or for when the playoffs are no longer possible.

If you look at what Chad Henne brings to the table...hard work, buys in completely with the coaching staff, a mature outlook on his career, and a certain ability to NOT get down, but to bounce back. This is a kid who will not go to hell in a handbasket because he was benched.

After this season....Henning will be moved out to pasture and the Dolphins will build an offense around Henne. One that suits what Henne brings to the table. They will expect him to respond to the message they are sending him, and I believe they are confident he will respond. Listen to Coach Sparano's words....he's not lying, he's not using coach speak. This is not an indictement on Henne's future. He has improved tremendously on things he needed to work on over last season.

If we fall short of the playoffs, Henne will return to the starting job, and they will loosen the reigns and insist on him working on being more dynamic with his decisions.

Its a mistake the coaching staff made, Henne does not play well in Hennings system. But he can excel in a system similar to what Scott Linehan runs. Im not talking a spread offense...but more of a single back....3 WR set offense predicated more on creating space and having him hit those spaces with his arm.

Really, we are kinda lucky in that we have Chad Pennington and Chad Henne, in that we can still regroup, make a run with CP...but because of both of these QB's nature, not risk hurting Henne's development for the duration of his career.

There is nothing confusing about this. Omar Kelly’s opinions include the total worthlessness of Koa Misi, Yeremiah Bell being a great strong safety, and Alama-Francis being starter material, among many other boneheaded statements.

There’s no contradiction here. Look elsewhere for an argument.

Of course we will have to see what happens...but I assume this means that the Dolphins think Henne doesn't have it, and is not in their future plans. It's not like you can build your team around Pennington, given his age and durability issues. I don't think he can play any better than he did in 2008, which was good but not great. So I expect us to draft a QB in the first round next year.

I'm skeptical about the "Henning is holding Henne back" posts, just because I don't think our coaching staff is ******ed. Either he's not letting himself throw deep, or they're not letting him. If they're not letting him throw downfield, it's because they don't think he can, not because of some crazy short-pass fetish.
