03/11/08 - Gardner-Webb product Brian Johnston, a rising prospect for this April's NFL Draft, wowed scouts at his first workout Saturday. Working out at San Diego State for a handful of NFL scouts, Johnston showed exactly why he is one of the top defensive end prospects heading into April's annual draft. Measuring in at 6-foot-5, 274 pounds, Johnston ran his first 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds. Johnston's 40-yard dash time would have been the fourth best at the NFL combine for defensive ends, and the best for any lineman weighing more than 260 pounds. Johnston's most impressive stat from the 40-yard dash came with a very strong 1.51-second time through the first 10 yards, an important time with regards to a players quickness. By comparison, Johnston's 10-yard split was the same as Arkansas' running back Darren McFadden turned in at the Combine earlier this year. Johnston pulled off an impressive 35-inch vertical leap as well on Saturday, which would have ranked second among defensive linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine - and best for a player of his size. The most impressive result overall, however, may have been Johnston's time in the 20-yard shuttle. He turned in a 4.18-second time, which is better than any lineman at the NFL's Scouting Combine. 02/12/08 - All-Star Game Risers Team: DE Brian Johnston (Gardner-Webb): Johnston needed to show his stuff at the Hula Bowl because he lacks an invite in Indianapolis…and he did not disappoint. His 6'5", 280 pound frame gives him a chance against NFL right tackles. His pass rush is more bull than gazelle, most relentless than overwhelmingly quick. He's not slow, by any stretch, and uses his instincts to smell out misdirection. Guys like Aaron Kampman have made Pro Bowl careers out of similar skill sets coming out of college.
12/10/07 - 2007 American Football Coaches Association FCS All-American: DL Brian Johnston enjoyed a fabulous senior season for Steve Patton’s Runnin’ Bulldogs, collecting 74 total tackles (37 solo), a school and conference-record 24.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures. He finished second nationally in tackles for loss per game, and helped Gardner-Webb improve nearly 70 spots statistically in the final national defensive rankings from a year ago. GWU led the Big South in total team defense in 2007, with Johnston leading the way from his end spot. Johnston finished his career with 20.5 sacks – the most in Big South history – and finished as the league’s top performer in career tackles for loss and pressures as well. probably 6th or later. Possibly 4th but I doubt it. Ive seen him mocked for the 5th round but we dont have a 5th as of now

Wow a 270+ guy running in the 4.5's for the 40.....that is impressive. He may be worth a 6th or 7th rounder? Sometimes these small schools can produce some real gems.

What's weird is he's more of a bull rusher. He looked more like a DE when he dominated the Hula Bowl but with that type of speed I wonder if we could play him at OLBpadre31 likes this.

The deal with this cat is he was in for interviews with Ireland back in 2008, they sort of know what he is as they scouted him and talked with him.
He does look Rothian with more speed, but his first task will be beating out Erik Walden on Special Teams. -
I saw him at the Hula Bowl. Couple of points; he's not strong at the POA and he's got short arms and it makes it harder for him to get off a block. He doesn't change direction very well either and I think I'm right in saying he's only ever played DE and Gardner Webb ran a 3-4.

Roth had the short arms, but he also had experience playing Lb. albeit ILB.

Same here, Roth was pretty much on the bucket list in preseason 2008, yet they coached him up to be a feriocious SOLB, I'm betting they can do so again but this time the guy can cover somone, a notorious Rothian weakness.
