It's actually a seismometer to detect for any dong-related seismic activity. It's really for everyone else's protection.

Interestingly enough, Wake's dong wasn't even in attendance that day. In fact, it was just across town at Florida Atlantic University; it was giving a TED Talk about the use of drones to speed up insurance claims after natural disasters. Kinda ironic too.
