Interesting. Our best guard but always injured.

If traded, any idea what we would get in return as far as draft choice?

If we can get a 3rd or high 4th I say do it. If not, he's probably more valuable keeping.
-
It's really too bad, He is a terrific guard. It's unfortunate he can't stay healthy enough.

Or he could be packaged on draft day(s) for picks or to move up or down...Lots of possibilities, but I still wonder why they announced it to the world at this point ?? Seems to always degrade the value of a player. He is, however, financially a good option for some other team...his bonuses have all been paid...
-
This is suprising. I've met Justin a couple times, he's a great guy. He's great when healthy.
-
I read a post on the other site from a guy who ran into Yemiah Bell and Smiley at the airport last night that Smiley told him that he was traded to Seattle. I don't know if this is true but the guy did post this last night before this Smiley stuff came up.
-
He could be a piece of the rebuilding process now worth trading because we've "upgraded" the spot, but until the spot shows consistency this move makes me a little nervous. He's great when he plays, which as others stated, is part of the issue.
I'm still more nervous about it because the pick doesn't help us this year. When healthy Smiley is good.FinSane likes this. -
Dimitri, Incognito & the Donald will compete

I think we could get a third out of him.

Guy can't stay healthy
he is a good football player but his repeated injuries hamper his potential.
It's unfortunate he can't stay healthy enough.
These previous statements posters have made could have been said about Jake Grove
Smiley has missed 13 games in 6 nfl seasons while
Grove has missed 30 games in his 6 nfl seasons
so ask yourself the question,Who really is the injury prone player?calphin, Tin Indian and charlestonphan like this. -

Is this going to be another Matt Roth debacle, I wonder......
-
I'd be surprised if we get a third, but I hope so. At least a high fourth or even a conditional pick next year based on games played and/or started.
-
Thought: The report that came out a bit earlier saying the team was a bit divided on the Incognito signing; how much more do you think that locker room becomes divided when smiley is booted and Incognito replaces him? I imagine Justin is pretty respected in the locker room. -
I'd be surprised if Smiley could pass a physical.
People will stop complaining about Roth when his groin acts up and knocks him out again. -
If we manage to trade him it would clear salary to sign Jeanty or maybe help with signing Sharper.
And meet my boi:
Dimitri Tsoumpas CFL All Star Guard.
Dude is just a professional Olineman.
Maybe the CFL is the "new' USFL?
FWIW...I really liked Justin Smiley, imho he was the coolest of the dolphins Olinemen from what I've watched and listened to over the past two seasons.Tin Indian and finyank13 like this. -
My thinking is that the front office is desperate for assets to apply to the defense. I was right that the Incognito signing was not a slap on Donald Thomas. If this story holds any validity, then I think it's safe to assume that Thomas is secured as a starting guard.
Now some speculation...
It's pretty clear that this regime likes to double up on needs in the draft. (See: Merling/Langford, Murhpy/Thomas, Davis/Smith, Turner/Harline, Hilliard/Parmale) With the great need at OLB, I would expect this same strategy this year.
I see round one going FS or WR. Assuming we get a 3rd for Smiley, we can then go OLB, NT, OLB in rounds 2 and 3. At this point we have address 4 major needs, leaving TE and the remaining WR/FS hole that wasn't filled in round 1. We can take a shot at a TE in round 4 and sign Brandon Marshall. Team complete. -
If the Seahawks rumor is true I'm thinking it's a 4th rounder...possibly their higher one as they have 2 4th's in this draft.
-
Of course, that would mean Reggie Torbor would then be on the bubble, but if released he would free up an additional 2.8 million or so.
Smiley for Tatupu would be a push, but it would allow us to free up Reggie Torbor's contract, which is sort of how Ireland does things.charlestonphan and finyank13 like this. -
I just hope whoever plays keep the same level and even more talent to this line....so Pads, lets say Smiley gets dealt, I would think Incognito gets the first crack at LG no?? then you let Dimitri, Thomas, and Garner battle it out for RG.....oh and Murtha too......we could see Dimitri at RG u know??
FYI..........the thought of Long and Incognito playing side by side makes me feel funny in areas... -
To me, they really like Nate Garner and he will have a leg up to start as he can play either guard slot, Thomas, Incognito, Tsoumpas and Berger all in the mix, Incognito has alot to lose as his contract is disposable, Thomas..not sure on.
Berger could start, with Incognito becoming the back up Center/Guard leaving Thomas and Tsoumpas to duke it out for reserve G.
Tsoumpas at least has Practice Squad eligibility. -
Huh, I thought we might deal a Guard when Incognito signed, but I thought it would be Garner or Thomas going. If we can't get a very high fourth rounder, or preferably a third rounder for Smiley though, I say we keep him.
Although, as some mentioned, he could be ammo for moving up in the draft, maybe package him with our second rounder to get back into the late first round for a player they really like?
Seattle does not have a third rounder to give BTW. I think Totupu is to small to play in a 3-4 too. I do like him as a player, but he make a better strong safety for us and Bell has that covered already. -
