I believe Kevin Coyle has some experience with Morgan Trent if I'm not mistaken.

He does. Cincinnati drafted him out of Michigan while Coyle was there. He was okay...probably an upgrade over Jimmy Wilson and R.J. Stanford as a 4th CB.

 

Alphonso Smith is the answer to the question "which pick in the second round was an even bigger screwup than the Pat White pick". Denver traded their first rounder in 2010 for the chance to take Smith 37th overall. A year later they are trading him for the crap Gronkowski while Seattle, who made the trade with Denver, take Earl Thomas 14th overall. Ouch.

Sounds a lot like Jamar Fletcher, small corner who couldn't adjust to covering in the slot in the pros.

 

With Naanee the invisible and Marshall law performing as they are, Ireland has a terrible record in free agency this year. It wasn't great before, but this is by far his worse season for free agency.

 

I'm glad we don't have Holgram in his place.

 

It's not Smith's fault that Josh McDaniels traded a future 1st to get a 2nd that was used on him. Smith has good coverage skills, he is just really small. He is a much better corner than White ever was a QB.

 

Marshall has played as well or better than Vontae would....... and Naanee is crap..... 1-1 is terrible ? Your acting like we went out and spent some doe....... we clearly did as little as possible and your picking apart a silly little depth signing like it was a marquee acquisition..... and to say his "record" in Free agency wasn't good before... I disagree there too... it was pretty damn good last year and the year before when we actually made some pickups. By your logic, the Packers GM and Belichek have probably the worst Free Agency "records" of all time.

 

I think we should take a look at Chris Carr.

 

I am surprised he is a free agent. I wonder if he has some injury concerns.

He was a good starter for the Ravens in 2010. Injuries slowed him in 2011. If the Dolphins don't work him out, it is just another mind boggling decision by Ireland.

 

He worked out for the Patriots a few weeks ago and they took a pass. I wonder what the deal is.

Marshall has been solid. Javorskie Lane and Derrick Shelby have been pleasant surprises IMO.

I'd like to know how that breaks down considering our defense ranks the following:

• 8th in pass defense with a 75.5 QBR
• 3rd in completion % allowed (52.4%)
• Tied for 7th with 3 passing TDs allowed

That's not terrible considering we lead the league in most passes attempted on [b/c we nullify the run game] but have only 3 sacks.

 

This was something I was wondering about PFF's rating system for defensive backs. I get that they are assessing them on the passes thrown in their direction, but does this mean they are ignoring the times when the DB has good coverage and the QB moves onto his next progression? Or is this factored in?

Also, is there any appreciation for the quality of the throw and the amount of pressure on the QB on the play, both variables outside of the DB that would still affect a rating based on the outcome of a targeted pass?

As far as Marshall specifically, I was a fan of the signing due to how he played at Safety for the Cards in the second half of last year, and CK's film analysis showed that the plaudits he got for that role from his teammates and coaches were well deserved. Clearly with our CB depth atm this is not going to be an option, but I do hope we look at him as a Safety candidate for next year. I'd feel a lot better about moving a veteran to safety and aggressively pursuing multiple athletic young corners to improve our secondary next offseason.

 

I hate to say it, but even if Vontae was still here, WR now have a way to get into his head. Everytime someone catches a ball on the guy he is going to hear this "Need to call your Grandma now?". I like the kid, but there is clearly something missing in his head.

 

Since their coverage ratings are often better or worse than the passer ratings into their coverage or their comp pct allowed would lead you to believe, I think for the coverage rating the plays where their coverage was so good that a pass wasn't even attempted toward them is factored in.

The problem with trying out free agents at this time of the year is simply that these players just aren't very good. If they were better than the players already on rosters around the league, they would already be playing for one of these teams.

The reality is that the Dolphins are not going to be able to upgrade the DB's or the receiving corp until after the season is over. Hopefully Ireland, or whoever is the GM might be, will do a better job of drafting DB's and receivers than the Dolphins have done over the past several years.

 

If memory serves me right, Morgan Trent plays slow and struggles locating the ball in the air. Alphonso Smith and Aaron Berry are both guys who like to jump a lot of routes, which is why they fit and played solid (at times) in Detroit's Cover 2. I don't know how they would do here just yet, but they do both have talent. Berry's aggressiveness was an issue in college as well and was magnified at times because of how much he played on an island.

 

Or maybe Ireland is attempting to be frugal from year to year, knowing the season is long and things happen... People sure don't realize how hard keeping the entire roster 53 and solid is. This isn't Madden or Fantasy football, he is dealing with REAL money here! Jeff grew up football, and lives and breathes football! Our depth was HORRIBLE at most positions before him.

 

As I just said in another thread, Ireland signed a safety and a linebacker when there is a possibility Marshall will not play on Sunday. I find that interesting.
