Actually, the Ravens drafted Mark Clayton in round 1 in 2005. They also traded for Mason in 2005. They tried to trade for Moss. They traded for Owens, but he refused to show. Unlike us the Ravens have continually tried to add WRs, so it's not really surprising that they would succeed first.

 

I'm still curious about Dewayne Bowe NJ, KC just re-upped Chris Chambers, if they want to start with a new guy now is the time.

 

Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't draft a wide receiver. Sure, I would love one but we don't desperately *need* one. We swept the Jets running the ball down their throats, we lost to both of the superbowl teams (Saints and Colts) because our defense folded, arguably though, Ginn dropped a ball that would've won us the game (and Gibril played pattycake with Dallas Clark) but we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with. I still think we can go a long way with just a serviceable receiving corp.

 

If we dont acquire a WR then the FO is not doing its job.

The point is that you need certain core positions and #1 WR is one of them. Waiting to get one, when you have the opportunity is foolish. If the Dolphins don't get one this year it will be another wasted year.

 

Why though? If the opportunity lines up sure, but if you expect that rookie WR to automatically succeed that's ludicrous. A veteran like Torry Holt would produce more if you're looking for production this year and if it's not the right WR then you really shouldn't invest in him.

It all depends on opportunity. Right now I expect Miami to go in-house at the safety position. If you really want to improve the passing offense trade a 2nd for Greg Olsen or a 4th for Tony Scheffler. Those guys would bring an immediate impact. Heck in all honesty I wouldn't mind adding the both of them and going with 2 pass catching TEs flexed wide. It'd be hard to stop in the run game and really Olsen is faster than Camarillo.

 

I get an eery feeling that it's Dez Bryant at 12. Adding up some of the factors we've seen the last two years shows that.

 

No I wouldn't. These things have a strange way of adding up. Very strange.

Here's the logic:

1- The need is obvious.
2- Bryant has produced throughout his entire career.
3- Bryant is pretty durable.
4- Bryant has the attitude of a #1 which Miami has spoken about. Not the diva, but I want the ball attitude.
5- His character issues are overblown.
6- He has the physical makeup.
7- He plays a core position.
8- The other options have numerous flaws of production before the last year (Williams), fit in the defense (Morgan), arm length and fluidity in coverage (Graham), while Bryant's play is amazing.
9. We've ignored the position entirely. That's usually a give away of draft choice for Miami.
10. He solves the need for a pass catching TE since it's likely we'll have 2 WRs out there with him at almost all times.
11. He's the red zone and downfield threat the team needs.
12. He does not shy at all from contact. The type of WR Miami likes is someone that plays like Anquan Boldin, can run or will learn to run routes like Camarillo, and can push it down the field for chunk yardage. Bryant is that guy.

Actually, there was a QB shootout in one game, and great STs play in the other. Running the ball wasn't the key to those victories.

 

Ireland disagrees with you. He listed the core positions and #1 WR was in there. He also specifically said that everybody, including Miami was looking for a #1 WR.

 

I agree with Rickyc, with OLB being such a big need thats what I think they will take in the first. Did Ireland take a WR high in the few years he was running the draft in dallas? I know Jerry Jones made the final calls and they did trade for Williams, but I can not recall any recievers taken real high. If Thomas or Tate is still there at 43 they may take one of them in the second round but they will probably be gone by then.

 

Actually, this regime has said that they see #1 WR as one of their core positions. That said, there are overwhelming signs that point to taking a WR somewhere. I believe if Dez is available, they snag him. For all the reasons that Jaj mentions plus the fact that none of the 'rumors' have us interested in him. It seems the only info out there is that they are turned off by his attitude, which in GM and coachspeak, means they like him...a lot.

After that there may or may not be the 'right' guy available to us...

However, from the other view, they don't feel like they can 'miss' on their #1 pick. WRs are notorious for missing in the early rounds...almost as bad as QBs...

 

they will want good picks for D-Bowe, multiple picks, arguably you would be giving up more for Bowe, than you would for Marshall....Chambers is a nice 2nd WR but by no means a number one WR, and can't carry the burden of the number 1 WR, we all know that...KC isn't offloading D-Bowe for cheap, nor are they stupid like Oakland when making decision, they have actually made pretty sound decision since the change..........and one could say he is of questionable character hmmm??

 

At this point FS and OLB is a bigger need then WR imo.

 

I was on that boat for a while, but from what I've heard I don't think there's going to be an FS or OLB available at #12 that would make the impact that a stud WR would make. If Eric Berry was there? Sure. If Antoine Bethea is really available for just a 1st round, another possibility.

Maybe they can strike a gem in rounds 2-4 for the remaining positions of need.

 

It wasn't Dallas Clark, it was Jeremy Shockey. I know it because about once a week I have nightmares about that particular play.

 

nope i don't get your logic lol.mason is no chump udfa they signed off the street..they also just picked up a plethera(sp) of very good recievers tis off-season so i guess they wouldn't need to draft one.
if they are a complete team and we a re a complete team then why bother drafting? competition and turnover.
while our division rivals are out getting better at cb/safety..we are picking up wr's off the street.out of all of our recievers name one that is better than their #2 guy in mason has been.actually mason is #3 or 4 now and still better than all of ours.

 

also can you name a team that has won a superbowl in the last 5 yrs that hasn't had atleast 1 great reciever?the last time the ravens went and won it they had todd heap,mason..they had a darn good recieving core.

at the risk of being 7-9 again..you say spending money may get us far into the playoffs..well isnt that where we want to be?so your ok with being a fan of a mediocre team that could be super bowl champs if they just spend a little more money? we need to spend money..and here's the key..wisely.the fo needs to make better decisions.for the most part they are but spending a ton of money for average people like wilford and people that could be great "if"they stay healthy but havent shown they can do that.they spent a ton of cash on a o-line that sees atleast 2 starters on the sideline for half the games.

To add, if they think they can solve our WR needs with some 3rd and 4th round Pat Turner projects, this will also show stubbornness and arrogance.

 

Is this talk about Bowe being fueled by that link in the Club Forum? Because that link is really old.

Does anybody know if there is any credible source whatsoever that Dwayne Bowe is actually even remotely available? I think we would have heard something by now if that was the case.

 

The Fins ran the ball 36 time for 151 yards, we threw for 261 yards on 28 attempts. 21 of those yards came from a R Brown pass and 112 other yards came on two other pass plays.

 

I am not sure if that is what is driving the Bowe talk but it was not like he got along with his head coach this past season. As a matter of fact he was benched one week by the head coach.

 

I don't think the question is will they draft a WR, I think the real question is will they draft Dez Bryant at No# 12 if he falls to us. Dez Bryant is widely believed to be the best receiver in this draft. He has very minor issues regarding his character that are correctable but has all the skills, abilities and physical tools needed for a prospective No#1 wide receiver.
They still must see something in Turner because if he were a total washout they would probably have dumped him by now but that remains to be proven.
They may have the opportunity to draft what is believed to be the best wide receiver in this draft. This is something we haven't been able to do or haven't elected to do in a long, long time. The probability of success is usually better by taking a WR at the top of the draft than waiting until later rounds. We have a young QB with a strong arm who deserves the right resources to be successful and a young, true #1 is one of those resources.
The Dolphins have many needs but IMPO none any more important than a true #1 WR.

 

Ok, maybe it needed to rephrase the statement and say it was a 4th quarter shootout.

But to the original point, we didn't "sweep the Jets by running it down their throats." We won the 1st game behind a very good running game but the "key" to the victory was Henne's performance and 4th quarter passing.

And we got stuffed running the ball the 2nd game, averaging 2.3 yards for a total of 52 yards.

 

Seems like they worked through whatever beefs they had. If the Chiefs were looking to deal him I think they would have made some noise.

 

Technically the Patriots last won the SB in January of 2005 so it wouldn't be within the last 5 years. You might also recall that the MVP of that SB was their WR, Branch.

 

Bowe isn't available from what I gather. And if he was, the reasons so would be the same reasons we would pass on him.

 

Branch wasn't a great WR but he had a great day. What you find is that a lot of SB MVPs are WRs, especially recently. That's b/c of the great impact a WR having a great day can have. In my experience great WRs have great days more often than lesser WRs. So we can hope that Ginn has that great day when we need it. It's happened, but not a lot. Or we can get a great WR and increase the odds that we'll get that great day when we need it.

There's a reason that SB winning teams so often have pro bowl WRs. It's probably the same reason that SB winners so often have pro bowl QBs. It's b/c they are both important positions and they help you win a lot more than most every other position.

 

I have hard time believing Bryant will even be there at #12. Either way, Im 99% sure we're going to draft defense with our first pick.
