4-3 Base
Assuming we sign Matt Flynn to a deal as well as re-sign one of Paul Soliai or Kendall Langford to start at DT next to Starks/Odrick... here is I think may happen/what I'd want to happen.

008. Quinton Coples, DE
Coples is a versatile defense lineman that would line up at RDE. Coples is a force to take on so having him rush the passer across from Wake would be dangerous.

042. Vontae Burfict, MLB
The likelihood of Dansby moving to SLB and Burnett WLB in a 4-3 is very strong. We need a legitimate MLB in our 4-3 and Burfict may have question marks as far as his attitude goes, I think the veteran presence on the defense could straighten him out.

073. Kevin Zeitler, OG
I am a big fan of Zeitler and the linemen from Wisconsin are always fundamentally sound. I think he replaces either Carey at RG or Incognito at LG pending on what our moves are in free agency.

104. Marvin McNutt, WR
This is obviously a bit of a homer pick but McNutt is a guy that can get separation without blazing speed. He is deceptively fast meaning he may not be fast on the 40 but he always gets open.

138. Vick Ballard, HB
Ballard has showed a lot of promise in the past two months and Daniel Thomas needs show he can stay healthy for a whole season while Reggie Bush is in his contract year.

169. Matt Reynolds, OT
Marc Colombo is a goner and maybe we can strike gold with an offense tackle late in the draft.

200. Russell Wilson, QB
Philbin needs a developmental guy if Flynn is going to be his franchise quarterback. Wilson is small in stature but a giant at heart.

3-4 Base

008. Courtney Upshaw, OLB
We need a pass rusher next to Cameron Wake. Upshaw is a great talent and would provide a tremendous impact on this defense.

042. Markelle Martin, FS
Chris Clemons and Reshad Jones haven't exactly shown they are a true centerfielder of the defense. Martin is my #1 rated free safety and I believe he could start right away.

073. Kevin Zeitler, OG
Read above.

104. Marvin McNutt, WR
Read above.

138. Vick Ballard, HB
Read above.

169. Matt Reynolds, OT
Read above.

200. Russell Wilson, QB
Read above.

Not too shabby. Only guys I'd pass on are Vontae and McNutt.

Vontae is too mentally unstable. Great player though.

While McNutt has sure hands, he just doesn't look like he will be a game changer.

 

Would love either of the drafts, but I don't think Kevin Zeitler's going to be around that long. Burfict, if he interviews well, will probably gone also. On talent alone, he's a 1st rounder. Interesting that Ireland thinks Karlos Dansby is suited to play 4-3 MLB according to Barry Jackson's column, and that Miami would look to add another LB to compete or start ahead of Koa Misi. I almost wonder if maybe you try and grab someone like Cliff Avril in FA and maybe still draft Upshaw to play Sam. Heck, if you free up a lot of money and Mario Williams shakes loose, having a trio of Williams, Wake, and Upshaw would be very nice. Overkill perhaps, but that's a lot of good pass-rushing options.

 

Vontae is a risk but I think in the right situation he'll be fine.

McNutt is a guy who can get separate based on his route running and physicality... I've watched nearly every game of his and he has improved each season. This past season he was the sole reason why our passing game was decent. I think he made more big plays than fingers on both my hands this past year. Sure he's no Justin Blackmon or Alshon Jeffrey but in the 4th round what can you expect?

 

Scouts view Harrison as a late 1st to 2nd round FS. Also, while I don't really like Cousins he should be picked in the 5th round.

 

That is not the point of the game he is playing. He is going by the draft board set up by draftek.com board.

 

Burfict will be a stud in the NFL. Mark my words. Especially if he goes to a 3-4 defense.

I have some hesitations with him as as well. He's a physical beast, but there are motor/drive questions. Even on the physical side, I don't see that first step explosion. I see him as a Julius Peppers without that great first step. In the NFL does that translate to inconsistent performance oscillating from bad to good, but not great?

 

Trade down scenario:

1. Whitney Mercilus DE (Relentless pass rusher that can play in both 3-4 or 4-3 set)
2a. Vinny Curry DE/OLB (with these two picks the Fins have added the two best passrushers in this draft)
2b. Harrison Smtih SS (much needed help for the safety position, I would expect the Fins to also address this position via FA)
3. Orson Charles, TE (pass catching TE to pair up with Fasano)
4. Mitchell Schwartz, OT
5. Russell Wilson, QB
6. Eric Page, WR
7. no idea

 

I agree that there is something missing with regards to Coples. I personally, want nothing to do with him at 8/9. As a matter of fact I would take Whitney Mercilus at 8 or 9 before I would take Coples/Upshaw or Ingram.

 

Really wouldnt mind that draft but I dont think Allen or Curry will be there in the respective rounds you have them in.

 

True, me too I was just using the Drafttek stuff like the OP. They also had Reuban Randle and Tommy Streeter going in the 7th round.

I think the Fins could address safety with a guy like Guy from Kentucky in the 4th round.

 

Personally, I'd put Nick Perry first, Reiff second, Johnathon Martin third, Trent Richardson or Dre Kirkpatrick tied for 4th.

I'd sell my mom to have the rights to Nick Perry, he will be a damn good pass rusher at the next level.

 

Agreed. The first step is a big thing, plus he doesn't always use his hands, they just sit there, he doesn't do anything with them. He also plays tall. The fact that he could trun it on for the Senior Bowl means he had something left and thats not good. For the best pass rusher bar none is Nick Perry. I was talking to Rob Rang about him on friday and he had him at 21 then, now he's #14 overall on the big board.

Perry is very similar to Robert Mathis IMO, although Perry may be bigger.

 

What about in a defense capable of moving Coples around from 43DE to 34DE to inside in nickel? Don't teams drool for that type of versatility?

Only if the player in question is going to produce. Moving a half hearted player around is not going to work. And, given his Junior tape when he was asked to play inside in place of Marvin Austin he was blown off the ball with regularity by double teams. On the edge he's a better run defender as IMO he can use his length to help control gaps, but he does lack the base strength to play inside with much regularity while being productive. I'd rather just stick with Merling than this guy.

And watch how he tries to bend to cut the corner to the quarterback; he doesn't do it very well.

If you dont have the heart for the game no coach is going to make you get it. Lazy college players "usually" turn into lazy pro players.

 

Coaches have less control of professional players than they do college players who must maintain their scholarships from year to year. And, with the new CBA which has reined in the practice time, OTA's and such, there is even less interaction on the field in terms of practice. You may get him motivated, but if the fact this was his senior season couldn't motivate him to play balls out until some snaps in the Senior Bowl then what the hell is going to after you pay him his guaranteed money? A guy shouting at him? That worked wonders for Albert Haynesworth as well.

You have to bend a bit to get the job done, you can bend your knees and get low, other player do it. Julius Peppers does it, he's a big dude, he's heavier than Coples and is either 6'5 or 6'6'' or something. If we're talking about a guy being a Top 10 DE I'd like a guy who can rush the passer better than this. Having difficulty bending as an end is an issue. He can't do it with consistency even against waist bending tackles in college.

Jake Long would own this guy in pass rushing situations. Top 10 DE's should be able to beat upper level tackles in my view.
