Draft King mock 1/7/09

I just dont see us going safety with any of our first three picks..

Center, linebacker, nose tackle..need strength and power at these positions. keep building from the inside out.

I would love mack or unger to pair up with donald and justin.

Just pick the best player available in those three positions. Seems like a pretty solid simple strategy after assessing our weaknesses on the season. {lotta ss's in there,lol}

I could see it. William Moore is a heck of a football player.

And do we really pick #26 after all?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and draft someone from these positions that we haven't drafted or aquired in FA just because these concerns are coming straight from the horses mouth if you will.

I know there is Aaron Maybin or Jerry Hughes; I doubt they declare. I have Andre Smith dropping just b/c I don't think he is a Top 5 Tackle in this draft.

I can think of some other 'notes for self' for you.

Andre Smith is a guy I changed my opinion on. I didn't know much on his personality abnd when I liked him he was playing well. After watching him more, especially when it counted he struggled. Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe, and Jason Smith are defiantly better. Ciron Black and Eben Britton are even IMO but Smith's issues lowers him for me. the fact that he missed the biggest game of his life due to suspension baffles me.

What don't you like about his play specifically?

He has a very slow first step which allows speed rushers eat him up. I don't like the fact that in this biggest game of his life he was not playing due to a suspension. He is big and strong but I think the fact that Alabama's line as a hole was solid truely made him seem as a better player than he truley was.

According to the Miami Herald we could bump to 25:

The NFL said the Dolphins will draft 26th in the first round, but would move up to 25th if Philadelphia, San Diego or Arizona makes the Super Bowl. In his first mock draft, ESPN's Todd McShay has Miami picking Gators junior inside linebacker Brandon Spikes, with USC linebacker Brian Cushing and Alabama junior defensive tackle Terrence Cody going right before that.

I would be happy with Spikes due to his versatility. He obviously can play inside but like CK brings up, he could be very good on the outside.

I think that C and WR remain two of the strongest needs- the Ravens game was a good example of that. And we are hoping that a) Donald Thomas is as good as advertised b) Smiley can come back on time and at full strength.

This might be overkill, but how nice would it be to have Unger AND Mack? I have to give props (Boomer, et al) to the notion that not only is Unger solid, but how nice would it be to have one guy who could step in anywhere on the line (except LT) without a steep dropoff in play? I would imagine that it could be a cost effective approach as well. Mack may come with some question marks, but the dude is a flat out mauler with smarts and work ethic. Unger- he's just plain good and darned athletic to boot. If I had to pick one right now- Unger gets the nod because of his versatility. Just with C in mind- tough call.

Alex Mack is playing way too upright in pass pro, doesn't reset his feet and will find himself on his backside faster than you can pronounce his lastname against any decent NFL DT if he doesn't get rid of this habit. Personally, unless I'm absolutely positive that I can get him out of it without messing up his technique, I'm not investing a first or high second round pick in him.

Why go center that high when a big, strong, mean SOB like Antoine Caldwell will be there in Round 3?

If you ask me and you didn't so I am chimming in here our needs are as follows...

1) Pass Rushing Outside Linebacker
2) Cornerback(Andre Goodman is a Free Agent)
3) Nose Tackle
4) Big Wide Receiver
5) Center

I would much rather have Vontae Davis.

I'd prefer OLB, but I would not shed a tear if we got William Moore. I think he is awesome, and could potentially play either S position depending on how he tests out at indy(though I think he'd be better at SS).

Add mulauaga and curry to that list and thats 5 legit 1st rounders, we gotta try to get one of those bad boys. Then one of those centers with our 2a {Unger, mack,caldwell}..

Who is getting bumped at LB? Roth on 1st 2 downs? Crowder? Ayodele? I would guess Ayodele, but I'd rather have a S like Moore. I'm sticking with interior OL and WR as the positions of greatest need.

As an aside, Matty Roth had a nagging groin injury over the last 7 games or so, he was going to see a specialist about it this week.

A 3rd down OLB who is a pass rusher mostly would be a great way for a rookie to break into the NFL.
