We shouldn't be rebuilding.

That's a complete failure on the part of Parcells/Ireland if we are.

Our defense should be playoff caliber, and the system switch should have been fairly seamless with the right QB.

 

Our defense doesn't have a few years to rebuild. Fasano, with a decent QB, is a good TE. Marshall was a distraction and the road he's going/gone down would have meant we lose him to prison or death without gaining anything. (Not meant to sound that cold) The right side of the line is being addressed right now, right? Getting a QB that can play in Philbin's system will be key. Next, we need a legit #1 WR. Blackmon?

No. Sometimes that expensive doo-dad you bought winds up being as useless as another udder on a boar and doesn't perform as the salesman said. So, you've got an expensive doodad and no matter how much it cost, because it takes up space and doesn't make the house any better than it would have been otherwise, it's not good. Plus, it's garish, high maintenance, and gets in the way a lot. That means that it's an expensive piece of junk. Even in the best of houses, you've got to get rid of the junk. This has not been the best of houses in a very long time.

 

Rebuilding? No. Modifying the car? Yes.

A new offensive system and head coach? Or a new def system and coach? Or just all the other coaches? We did keep the same Gm so you can't say complete rebuild.

We're not rebuilding. They traded Brandon Marshall because he's a huge ******* and a problem child, and showed no signs of getting better on a new team and with his issue clinically diagnosed.

I understand that perhaps there were extenuating circumstances that necessitated the MArshall trade, but why not immediately go after Meachem or Jackson. Meachem signed with SD without even a visit

 

I think the difference between a first year starter, if that starter is Flynn, and a rookie is immense. Flynn is ready to go now. If Miami tries to address the QB situation through the draft then the QB will likely sit for a year or so and then be given another year or two to see if he is worthy.

Seems like some of the other points brought up by OP are the same one's Miami has had for years...questions at WR, TE, OL needs work, new offensive system being installed. If not yearly, then about every other year.

Jake Long we broke the bank on a guy who doesnt touch the ball and he hasnt been healthy . Bumrush i will agree with you on most of your post and i cant find fault with it. i just dont like any of our first ,2nd and 3 rd round picks .

 

Good comments, but let's face it, this isn't anything that we didn't already know watching this team for the last 4 yrs. The overall talent has improved greatly under Irish...however, it also had a very long way to go when he started...

What is concerning to me, now under Philbin, Sherman and Coyle, we are drastically changing our schemes on both sides of the ball. Will all the players we have acquired under Irish fit into what they envision this team to be...I don't know. None of us really do until we see what the rest of FA and the draft bring to supplement what we have now... From what I can see, the only thing that has changed so far is that one of the S positions have been filled (Marshall), we are down a WR, and the DL is one step closer to being ready...we still have needs at (not in any order):

-- WR
-- QB
-- SS
-- OLB/DE
-- TE
-- OG
-- RT

Additionally, as was before, we don't know what the roles of guys like Misi, Burnett, Gates, Clay, Merling, Murtha, Garner, Jerry are going to be...Is Misi going to be moved inside ?? Where does that leave Burnett ?? Will Clay and Gates become what we hoped they would ?? Where does Merling fit along the DL ?? Can Murtha, Garner, Jerry fill the OL spots ??

Rebuilding/retooling/starting over from scratch...your guess is as good as mine, but we are still only a few days into FA and the draft isn't for another 6 weeks... I do think, however, if they sign Flynn, while he may or may not be the answer we are all looking for, it will appease most fans some...at this point, it's like looking at a cleared piece of property with some stakes and markers placed on it...you just can't envision what it's going to look like...

 

Wait, Long has had one season (2011) with some lingering issues, other than that he's been fine. He was the best choice at the time of the draft and has been all that was expected. Who would you rather have ?? Chris Long ?? And as I said above, you still have to consider where the triumvirate started from...this team was just better than a HS team, talent wise when they arrived...

 

Rebuilding after 4 years yet Ireland continues to get a pass from fans on this board.

 

Is it really that difficult to think some of us can't say which moves were Ireland's fault and which were Parcells? So difficult that sentences like the one you posted have to come every week?

you build teams from the ball out. very rarely do you have a team with a horrible o line make the playoffs and you need a superstar qb to make it happen. Some of those colts teams with peyton and the steelers this year were nasty with nothing on the o line. When people say ignorant stuff like that about the most important position on offense other than qb it makes you wonder....a guy that doesnt touch the ball....pffft

 

Rebuilding because of a new HC and new philosophies, not because of the overall talent on the roster...I'm not passing judgement on Irish, I don't know that he's done enough either. There simply isn't a way to distinguish which moves (good or bad) that are a direct result of Irish, Sparano and/or Parcells at this point... Besides, we're still only 3 days into FA...let's hold off the lynch mob for a bit just yet...

 

On the other hand, he is consistently blasted on this board for four years of work when he only "Officially" came to be in charge after March 24, 2011 - when Bill Parcells 'Officially' removed his name from the Dolphins leadership, and Ireland could make 'Official' announcements, decisions, etc., etc., etc. Granted, Parcells really left in Sept, 2010, but his Grand Moff Tarkin stench still permeated over all until he 'Officially' left. YET Ireland is still blamed for that which was performed before he could 'officially' do anything without the stamp of approval of the Grand Moff. Let's see.... today is March 15, 2012, counting Leap Day, that would mean that he has been 'officially' in charge 358 days, more or less, Actually less since the 'official' announcement came some time a little later, if I recall. Before that he had been placed in charge of "day to day" operations, which is not exactly a full granting of power - "Keep the store runnin', Kid. I'll be around. Don't do anything without checkin' with me!"

Ireland may turn out to be every bit as horrible as a lot of people think. There is just no way to know yet. The only evidence anyone actually has is last off season.

He's held the official title of GM for 4 years. He's been doing the job solo for 2? So that's why I asked you. You and others jump down my throat anytime I say anything critical of the man, so please, tell me how long I need to wait before we can start assigning some blame to him for Miami's mediocrity.

 

IMO there's a certain amount of rebuilding whenever you bring in new coaches and new systems. Some of your current players will fit and some won't. Some players will get it and some won't even if your coaches are making adjustments to fit their skills. However, if your QB and enough other key players "get it", that rebuild doesn't have to take a whole year. I disagree that we wouldn't have been rebuilding if we added Manning. Even if he recovered enough to eventually play you would have had a whole coaching staff and team trying to adjust to Manning or Manning to them. The quickest rebuilding occurs when the QB and the staff is on the same page. I think that is most likely to happen quickly with Flynn. The next quickest would probably be Tannehill. Tannehill will still have to adjust to the speed of the game, but at least the terminology and concepts should be similar. The QB is obviously the most important position. After that how much of a rebuild will depend on how much of our roster fits and gets it.

 

First of all, no one jumped down your throat for being critical of Ireland, I responded because you came after anyone who doesn't automatically want him gone. You snarked first actually.

Secondly, official title for 4 years means nothing. You know Parcells was there for most of that. Why do you ignore it?

Lastly, he's only really had one offseason in charge until this one. Not 2.

Uhm, does signing guys no one else wants and expecting them to compete at a high level sound like a winning formula to you?

I learned after 07, a team can have 3 legitimate questions, and have a good yr, but you are more likely to have most of those answers go against you, despite optimism, and you have a terrible yr.

Ok. So let's give him 1 year. Still waiting on the answer. How long until, as fans, we are allowed to assign blame to Ireland if the mediocrity continues? 2 full years as solo GM? 3? More? I'm legitimately curious, not trying to snark.
