that's a shame. some dogs can be adorable but when I have kids eventually I can't imagine having anything more than a cat around just to be safe. feel really bad for the family, and for the girl. opie's right, how soon we forget that all dogs were feral not too long ago

 

I'm not surprised to see the Chow as the dog that has done this. My uncle's Chow killed one of their smaller dogs awhile back.

 

Very agressive breed.

 

i had a friend in High School..his family had 2 Chows...and no one outside of his immediate family EVER entered his home.

this is just so ****ing horrible. good god, poor baby. parents will never be the same ever again. what a tragedy.

and those dogs are beautiful and exotic but, they are not good family dogs at all.

 

its really strange with chows. my uncle had 2 when i was younger. the young one was a b**tard child from hell who tried to bite my face off every time i even walked by him (seriously, my parents were worried because they saw him snap at my face a few times), but then they had a second, older chow who was the NICEST dog i've ever met in my life. she'd come up and cuddle or just hang out, i think i even tried to ride her (i know, i was like 4 or 5 at the time) and she didn't try to kill me or anything from what i recall. i think she was just an anomaly though, because most chows i've met tend to be a bit... bitey.

 

i actually read that pits were very good around humans as they have had it bred out of them since people fight them....... Ive also heard stories of rots that are great around kids not sure why that is. Chows though are horrible when it comes to humans.

Absolutely. I'm one of those people who believe that a dog's temperment is 100% a result of how it's raised/treated by it's owners. Pitbulls have so many ******ed myths about them, it's ridiculous. I thought for sure that when I clicked this thread that that would be the bread in question.

Terrible story though.. You have to wonder why any parent would put their child in a situation like that to begin with.


O yea, my gf has a 150lb Rot and he's the ****. Extremely cool personality and very playful.

 

my sister had 2 rotweilers...one was a major pain in the a, would jump all over me and scared me as a kid...but that dog was crazy and had to actually be put down..that dogs son was the chillest most awesome dog.....its varies

 

On the topic of dog breeds, this article says that the dog was a chow/golden retriever mix. I know chows are know to be meaner dogs, but goldens are supposedly just the opposite. Regardless, a really sad story.

Some aggressive dogs are actually fine with kids because they have a protective and loyal temperment toward a family. The trick is to make sure the dog knows the new child is a part of the family. Once the dog gets that, its all good.

Either way, parents should always exercise caution between animals and extremely young children. Even a cat can be dangerous if a child trys to pull its tail or something like that. Deep cat bites require hospital treatment, and if they are not declawed they can leave some nasty cuts. Dogs though, due to larget size and more powerful jaws, must especially be watched.
Children should be introduced as part of the family and the dog made to realize that the new child is not competition. Special care should be taken to make sure the dog still recieves a good amount of attention.

Horrible story for the parents, that will definately haunt them for the rest of their lives. I can only hope some other prospective parents will read this and take care to make sure this doesnt happen to them.

 

what I had read or saw on tv not sure which one :lol: was that pitbulls had alot of human agression bred out of them due to dog fighting. Essentially what happened and is still happening, is since people fought the pits, the owners would have to seperate them inbetween rounds. So in order to do this without getting bit since the dogs were aggressive at the time, was they started putting down any pits which showed any aggression towards humans, and breeding the ones with a good tempermant towards humans. Of course its not 100% but interesting I think. (Of course I don't think its a good thing they killed the agressive dogs either.)

 

Yep, that's a big part of what's happening with Pits.

I read an article that showed that Pits aren't any more naturally agressive than most other dogs. Basically, the article says that the temperment of a Pit is that of a dog that is very eager to please. Meaning, they badly want the approval of their owners.

This would certainly explain why they became the most popular dogs used for illegal fighting.

If you want to see a cage fight, then hop your *** in there and fight another human being. It's not like we're lacking violent sports. I don't understand why people can't get that same fix watching boxing or MMA.

It just seems cowardly to me to need to have dogs do your dirty work.

 

Rotts are actually great with kids. The only problem they have, if any, is that like kids too much. They don't realize how big and strong they are and will jump on young ones in an attempt to play with them.

The Akita, surprisingly, is another great breed for kids as they were bread by their masters in Asia to protect kids while their parents were away in the fields.

This is a sad story indeed though. A shame the parents weren't more mindful.

 

I had a female Rott who lived to be about 14. She wouldn't have harmed a fly and was always great with kids. I really believe its how they are raised.

 

Same here. Like I said earlier, my gf has a whopper of a Rott (150lbs) and he's a big baby once he knows you're not trying to break into the house.
