For those of you who take protein supplements, do you take them before or after your workout? Or do you take them multiple times a day? I usually just take one scoop after my workout, but I was wondering if there was a better way.

I've taken protein shakes and I drank them right after I worked out. I haven't used them in like 3 months tho. I actually think I'm a little bigger now then I was when I used them.

Protein is good after a workout, as your body is starving to replace what it lost. However, it will replace the fuel first before it starts on the building (fill in the hole, then make the mountain:up:). SO, what I usually do is supplement creatine and other amino acids right after to 'fill in the hole', and then go protein heavy for the next 2-3 days before I workout again. That's where I would suggest supplementation if you are going to do it. Otherwise your body is simply going to flush it out b/c it doesn't need it. If you are on a high protein diet already, that is. If not, you could supplement small portions (half the recommended dosage) once a day and not be risking too much kidney strain.:wink2: FWIW.

7lbs in two days is a lot bro. Is it mostly water you think ? That is too fast in my opinion. Watch yourself. Trust me on this one. You don't want to lose too fast, as that can have bad consequences as well.

Remember this though, the body does almost all of its growing while you sleep. So its important to get the protein in you, but don't forget to neglect the 8-10 hours of sleep you need.

Sleep is valuable but I've always felt it's highly overrated in the percentages.

    Diet: 55
    Exercise: 35
    Sleep: 10

    In my opinion.

Yeah its one of those things that many young, but socially active lifters forget about. They think its all about lifting and forget eating & especially sleeping and what the right amount of those will do to help your body build itself back.

They want to lift and look good for the ladies and the club dance floor and forget its the simplest things that help the most :wink2:

True dat ! But I have to admit I did some of that right after coming out in 1993. I was going to a piano bar named "Helene's Rendevouz" I got out of work at 12am and went right the bar 4 out of 5 weeknights a week, and drank at least 3 beers a night. I still can't believe I didn't become an alcoholic. Thank God I found out about lifting and starting in 1998 completely changed my diet & liftstyle. I was only able to lift for about 5 years but I did it hard & heavy for those years and ended up squatting 365 x 3 and maxing on the bench with 1 x 285. Not a lot, but I only started lifting at age 38.

I have rheumatoid arthritis now in my hands and feet and starting in a knee and had to give all the lifting up.

Man, that sux PMZQ...I know a few ppl that have that and it can be really debilitating. Do you do any lifting at all now?? Or has the arthritis made you stop altogether? If you can handle your body weight, there are plenty of exercises you can do with just that. I just recently got a book called "Combat Conditioning" by Matt Furrey(:shifty: hehe, Furrey) and it's chock full of good BW exercises. I have it on PDF, so if you're interested, PM with an e-mail and I'll send you a copy.

As for the alchoholism, we both still have a good shot at that.

Well what happened is that I did something very stupid and I paid for it.

I got into the lifting and was really regular at the gym 5 times a week on a split of :

Monday - back & biceps - deadlifts 4 sets with chains, lat pulldowns 4 sets, sitting rows 8 sets (using 2 handles - close grip and then straight bar), then concentration pyramiding barbell curls (3 sets), seated concentration curls (3 sets) and finally standing cable curls (3 sets) - followed by 15 minutes of fast walking (3.2 to 3.5) on the treadmill

Tuesday - chest & triceps - flat bench press 3 sets with chains, incline bench press 3 sets, cable crunches 3 sets, skullkrushers 3 sets and cable pressdowns 3 or 4 sets, followed by treadmill

Thursday - Legs - squats 8 sets (6 regular, 2 front), stifflegged deadlifts 3 sets, hamstring curls 4 sets (I usually did a "grandpa walk" to my car - I hated leg days

Friday - shoulders & abs - military presses 4 sets, dumbell shoulder presses 3 sets, shrugs 4 sets, roman chair 4 sets of 25 with 35 lb dumbell, followed by treadmill

Saturday - machine day, whatever I wanted to do, usually 2 sets of no more than 4 exercises (pec deck, bicep curls, etc) followed by treadmill.

Twice a year, I would do an 8 week 1 rep max routine that some of my powerlifter friends had given me, and I would set a target goal lift and then go for it. I competed in a few shows, not that I was gonna win, but just for the experience. I never met nicer people than powerlifters.....they are truly cool people  Bodybuilders can tend to be a bit narcissictic and I got along better with the powerlifters who tend to not really care to peacock around in the gym like the bodybuilders do. (Sorry if I offend any of the bodybuilders on the board)

But here is what I did that was stupid. I tried taking 500 mgs of Enanthate a week. I was 42 and wanted to get bigger, as I was frustrated I was working hard, yet not gaining as much muscle as I wanted. I did it because I wanted to be like "the other boys" in the gym. However my vanity got in the way of my ego, and I failed to remember most of those guys in the gym, were also 20 years younger than I was. I reacted very badly to the 'roids and I paid the price for it, with my panic and anxiety disorder getting out of control & my hormones going bonkers (I hadn't had pimples like that since I was 15). Then when I finally stopped the 'roids, the arthritis started taking over. So I basically stopped lifting altogether, and now just do treadmill that I have in my Florida Room in front of the TV. I can do that 4 or 5 times a week and watch whatever ballgame is on :wink2:

But that is my admission about my steroid use. It was dumb, and not for me. It might be for others, but I couldn't handle the hormones with my panic disorder.

Ok, I seem to be at a cross roads with my self here, and I have to get back on track. My problem is I love to lift weights, but I hate to do cardio, and I am having a terrible time controlling my eating. I've had mixed result from PT's telling me completely different things about weight loss, etc. My main goal is to lose the weight. I had a guy tell me today that I should concentrate less on lifting and more on cardio. That with my build I would benefit more from cardio muscular wise as well as health wise. But I dont want to give up lifting. And man I have got to get the eating under control. I tried the MW diet, I lasted a day...:pity:

Cardio will burn calories and therefore make you lose weight. Lifting burns calories too but the muscle it builts will still put on lbs or keep your weight the same (#wise). Not to be mean, but just stop eating and hit the cardio harder. You don't have to give up weights, just make cardio a higher priority. Another thing that might help is if you limit your eating to a certain time of day. Like cutting off your eating for the night at 9 or something like that.

Actually if you are trying to burn fat, weight lifting is just as important, if not more, than cardio. A good combination of both is the key.

From what I have read this is true. Resistance training is one of the most important things you can do to lose fat. Really that is what people mean when they say, "Lose weight". Well most people in America.

Of course a good combination of the both and the age old fact of burning more engery than you take in.

I have to agree with the above posts, enforcer. Don't give up the lifting, but you have to get your eating habits under control. The first step IMO would be to figure out WHY you eat as much as you do. Is it b/c of stress?? Boredom? For comfort/depression? I know my problem was eating out of boredom or using it to deal with my depression. Of course, that made me more depressed, so it became a downward spiral. Once you figure out why you eat, it makes formulating a plan of attack that much easier. It won't be easy to implement, but you'll know what you need to do, and most importantly, why.

Secondly, I would find a cardio activity that continues to burn calories even after you stop. Swimming, rock climbing, full court basketball - they all continue to burn calories even after your done with the initial activity- most so-called 'cardio' activities don't. (I think they should be re-termed 'low-intensity repetitive activity',but that's a whole other thread.) Additionally, DDP has a yoga and calisthenics-based body weight system called YRG- "yoga for regular guys". The website is here:

    http://www.yrgworkoutllc.com/joomla/

Since you're a wrestling fan, I thought you might want to check it out.:wink2:

Lastly, don't give up your lifting. You won't see the weight drop off as fast (if at all some weeks) b/c muscle weighs more than fat, but I would invest in a skin caliper and a full-length mirror to gauge progress instead. Knowing that I was gaining muscle and losing fat was just as much a spur as seeing my body transform, even if my weight didn't reflect the changes on the scale. You could probably cut down to working out once or twice a week without seeing any kind of loss in your muscle tissue, and that will give your body ample time to recover from one workout to the next considering the extra cardio you want to do.

Just don't give up man. We're all here rooting for ya.:yahoo:

To add to the Caliper idea, some simple measuring tape would also help. There are a few websites or programs that have you measure different parts of your body and is able to calculate your body fat percentage. Also if you didn't lose any weight and lost a few inches off the chest, waste, stomach and/or thighs, I would imagine you would feel pretty good

I would say most of this is good but I think the key is to find out why youre always hungry Enforcer. If its not stress or work related maybe the supplement you need is nothing then a good visit to the nutritionist (yes there is such a thing, spent a lot of time there with my dad after his stroke getting him to drop about 50 lbs).

They also sell supplements that defeat hunger cravings; Xenadrine for one thing used to have that effect on me when it had Ephedra in it. Id imagine you could get a similar effect minus the healthy risk associated with Ephedra from something like this: GNC - Diet & Energy: GNC Weight Management: GNC Control ACSâ„¢ Appetite Control Support

The pill option though is a temporary solution that you will have to always adhere to where as the nutritionist may cost more short term but could offer a more permanent solution. I think theyre both worth checking out but I think you try and find a long term solution first.

How important is it to take creatine w/ some sugar? The creatine I used before had sugar in it, the stuff I have now is a much smaller scoop and is doesnt have it already added in. Wondering if I should take it w/ a fruit juice, or if water is fine?

Water is fine, but adding sugar(glucose) helps aid in the absorption and use of the creatine. Drinking w/fruit juice or a sports drink(ie-gatorade) is definitely preferred. If you want a more detailed explanation of 'why' or 'how', just let me know.

  Thanks for letting me off the hook; I am kinda tired right now. I think somewhere further back in this (or another) thread I had a post on it...:shifty:

Edit: Hmm...did a search- didn't really come up w/ anything (guess I really didn't write what I thought:pointlol:), so here's the short of it: sugar(glucose) allows the body to more easily get at and use the creatine you have stored/are ingesting for muscular fuel. Yep, that's about as short as I can make it.
