This is the first I've heard of doing more weight with your first set and going down. I usually do a warm up set at lower weight, then an acclimation of just a couple reps with an in between weight then 2 sets at higher weight. I sometimes skip the acclimation, kind of depends on the exercise. I think what I'm doing wrong here is counting my warm up as one of my 3 sets. I'll start tomorrow doing a warmup and then 3 heavy sets, never thought of lowering the weight as I went though.

Also, my friend just sent me a rather long pdf file about the Max OT workout, anyone try it?

lol...I dont hate your guts, but I feel it. I did find an alternative to a spot, which I will try next time. One of those home gym type deals with the wieghts on the machine, so I can max out.

Absolutely, great program. I alternate between that and a custom program I setup. It has definitely worked for me.

    Hiding from you. :wink2:

So I finally got back into free weights (had to settle with mostly machines at school) now that summertime is here and I'm sore, especially after working my legs...

After slowing down quite a bit over the last 5 months, I finally got my bench back on track. I was able to do reps with 230 last weekend ...

5 weeks ago, I was lucky to do reps with 200.

Remember, by reps, I mean 3 sets of 6 or more with now spotter....and I am only 13... :pointlol:

Yeah, you take a month off, you lose strength. Back in February I took a month off because I did something to my leg and I just kept screwing it up more because I wouldn't let it heal.. I lost 15-20 pounds on my bench just from that.

Been doing better recently. Gonna start a A/B full-body schedule next week and let that run for 3 months. Last two weeks I've been blitzing my chest with supersets of flys and two drop-down sets of in. bench. Up 15lbs. on the flys and 20lbs. on the bench, so not bad overall. Would have been better if my sleeping and eating habits were so messed up. That'll get corrected in the next few weeks as well. And AZ- I wish I had those bench #'s at 13.

I wish I would started lifting at age 13.. I know they say it stunts your growth, but I'm pretty sure that being an inch or two shorter than 5'8" wouldn't have killed me.

I'm doing terrible. I've fallen off bad. I need to get re-motivated. I haven't seen the scale move or seen any strength improvement for awhile. My problem with that is the fact that I dont know how much to add and when to add it.

I havent been doing any training, I get a LOT of physical exercise at work. Lifting boxes, running between places, and so on. I have been eating better though and have given up soft drinks (soda, monster, etc) that count?

 I'm trying to lose weight. I lost like 10 pounds just this week.

190 is around where I should be and where I was for a while, then I ballooned up to 214!!

Honestly I wish I had the motivation to work out, but after lifting 50+ pound boxes around all day I really don't want to bench

How much exercise are you doing?? Most people, in my experience, are usually doing too much. Take off a week and come back with a plan. Give yourself a set (1-3) and rep (8-10, 12-15, etc.) range on each exercise, and every time you reach that upper number you move up 5lbs.

As one gets older, the body takes longer to recuperate, so if you've only been giving yourself a day in b/w workouts, try 2 or 3 days in between.

And, most importantly, get as much sleep as you can (more than 6 hrs.) Americans by and large simply aren't getting enough, and that's when your body does most of it's repair, maintenance and growth. That's all you need, my man.

Use that week off to craft a plan of attack (write it down!), and you'll be bustin' Patsie skulls in no time! In the immortal words of Rob Schneider, "You caaaan do itttt!"

http://www.mikementzer.com/ for guys that just want Strength/Mass heavy Duty II is a must read...I spent 6 years amatuer body building and powerlifting farted around for another 4 or 5...took 5 off and gained 2x faster (no BS) after reading his book and using his training techniques.

It will do NOTHING else for you other than grow mass but if thats what you want all I can say is give it a shot for 1 month and you will never train any other way.

    *EDIT*

It will tax your heart to the point of scary so any with heart issues stay away.

If youre still using the max workout program I suggested to you, you should be adding about 5 lbs whenever you can do 3 sets of at least 8 reps with whatever weight youre currently using.

I'm not a "jogging expert", but what are your goals? Running everyday isnt a horrible thing, but you do need to give your body time to repair and grow. Like I said, its an easier question to address when we know what your goals are.

I've heard running a lot is bad for your joints and muscles, I can't verify this, just something I've heard. I believe it was from a guy who is majoring in Exercise Science or something that I had a class with at school. From what I've heard, it deteriorates your muscles and that's why jogging often isn't good. The guy suggested that bicycling should be done more often as it's easier on your joints, etc.

I'd consider getting a bike, Aqua... You can still jog, but try splitting it with cycling. If you're trying to tone, just keep doing what you're doing and jog one day, then cycle the next. Maybe throw in some HIIT (interval training) in there too if you're real ambitious.

Running puts alot of pressure on your joints, its all the impact that you use.

Yeah, I don't like to run/jog a lot mainly for that reason. When I do go for a run or jog, I tend to stop running because my legs kill, not because I'm tired.

The other thing with jogging is, like slick said, most people don't give enough time for their body to repair itself before going out and jogging again. Also, if the muscles aren't strong enough, the impact of your feet hitting the ground will be taken mostly by your joints and ligaments. That's why obsessive runners are always so skinny and also why most have knee issues.

Body rep squats are a great way to build your Type I leg fibers and protect your joints. Try doing 100 of them- you'll see what I mean. Just make sure to do them only once every other- every three days. I would go every three, as that leaves you a total rest day in b/w squatting:wink2: and jogging. (BRS, rest, jog, jog, rest, OR jog, rest, jog; etc.) That way you're not burning yourself out.

Pull-ups are great solo work as well, as they only require a bar (or tree branch) at least 4-5 feet off the ground.

    Just some ideas.

Id cut the running down to 2-3 days a week. If you want to tighten your abs then you could do crunches, leg lifts, etc. And if you want to tone the rest of yourself then its a high amount of reps at a low weight. If you want me to get more specific then lemme kno.

been following the thread, and though it has already been mentioned often by AZFF, i though i would throw something in that i read in Men's Health today:

a study they cited says that those who drank 16 ounces of water immediately upon waking up in the morning saw their metabolism go up 24% for a period of 45 minutes.

however, drinking lesser amounts of H2O first thing in the A.M. had no effect.

I'm at the point in my life where I realize I'm never going to be Arnold Swartzenegger so I just do push-ups and treadmill. I do just about enough to maintain my current weight which fluctuates from 180-185. I'd like to do more to lose the gut, but it's hard with my diet.

Anyway, anybody have any comments on "The Perfect Pushup"? I've heard good things and am debating on shelling out the 20 bucks.

Are you talking about those rotating handle apperatus?

Dont know. 20 isnt much, but I think they are still a gimmick. Best pushups I have ever done included dumbells.. that is I keep my hands on them and get a bit deeper.

With pushup, I think it is MUCH about quality, that is really concentrate when doing each and everyone. Go narrow (Inside of chest) and then wide (Outside and front Delts).

Squeeze each and everyone, and just like lifting, really concentrate on those target areas. :wink2:

EDIT: I seriously think push-ups are jacking my bench WAAAAYYYY up. I did sets at 240 yesterday...that is up 40 lbs in 6 weeks....of course not yet to my former max and goal of 275

I've never been into the gimmick exercise stuff. I'm a firm believer in the fact that there are no shortcuts in getting in shape. However, my brother in law got a set of those and kept telling me how well they worked and how much it improved how many regular pushups he could do, etc..... I had my doubts but he went so far as to buy me my own set and I must say I was surprised at how much they burned me out. I actually use them pretty regularly now as a supplement to my chest workout.

Push ups never did much for me. Lots of practice on the bench is what really helped me improve my bench. I dont know that I ever want to get as big as the 405 I was throwing around in college but I am back over 300 lately just out of boredom with the 275 I was playing with before.

Anyone know some good stuff to flatten abs? I have tried more exercises there then I know what to do with....

you can find the video for it on limewire or something.... I basically do this routine. its 10 different exercises, they do 10 reps of each. i actually do 20-25 reps of each exercise, giving me 200-250 ab reps i do EVERY DAY. I have a solid sixer and that is how i got there and maintain it. Also helps to up the cardio as well... when i started doing more cardio, it helped the visibility of the strong abs that i already had. :)
