Getting caught cruising 15 mph over the speed limit will come with at least a $233 ticket, according to a new traffic fee schedule tentatively endorsed by Florida legislators.
For the seriously lead-footed, a speeding ticket at 20-29 mph over the limit is even pricier: at least $258.
Florida legislators, meeting in a special session to close a $2.3 billion budget deficit, acknowledged Wednesday that they're hiking speeding tickets for violations 15 mph to 29 mph over the legal limit by $35 — not the $25 previously discussed.
In a state with already hefty traffic sanctions, other penalties also are slated to rise. With legislators adding an extra $10 surcharge, running a red light will cost you at least $208, not wearing a seat belt will run $93 and moving violations like failure to yield will cost $143
Running a red light, I can agree with. I've witnessed fatal crashes, and now I don't even run yellows. But the speeding stuff is ridiculous. There are so many traps out there now, where the speed limit is pretty unreasonable.
The amount traffic scofflaws actually pay may be even higher in some cases, because local communities can tack on extra fees. Palm Beach County, for example, adds $8 to all speeding and traffic fines. Fort Lauderdale
adds an extra $7 to some violations.
"We're imposing fines that people may not even have the ability to pay," said Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation.

maynardNew Memberspeed traps are ridiculous here, at least in my area. driving down US highway 19 at night is like running through the gauntlet. i feel like there is a microscope on my every move. its crazy lol. i drive like a cautious drunk driver even though im sober lol

UCF FINaticNew MemberIf you think the speed traps are bad here, please drive through Georgia. Their Cops are absolutely crazy up there. They shoot radar off of almost every bridge and nail a lot of people for speeding.
***Oh towards Christmas I saw a Cop dressed up like the Ginch shooting radar on a street. He almost got me too.

Also you know what I love? Stop light cameras. I have been caught twice and the second was crap as turning right on red is legal in Tennessee, plus I had turned the exact same way at the exact same intersection a million times before with no problems. I later learned they had been malfunctioning and the cameras were being sold to another tech firm to re-upgrade them but that did me little good. Plus the Knoxville PD rigs it to where if you try to fight the ticket you have to pay 100+ if you lose and you know you will. :pity:

The entire south florida metro area also has major problems with traffic light synchronization. therefore, red lights are also traps here.
I guess no more going 90 on I-75 for me...
