For 4th time in 5 years, Jeff Ireland and Miami Dolphins don’t use Franchise Tag

Sceetoforum_veteranOPThe Dolphins only had one player under consideration for the franchise tag – nose tackle Paul Soliai, who was their franchise player in 2011 – but the Dolphins have not shown any interest in paying him the big-money contract he is seeking (Soliai is seeking a long-term deal, and his franchise tag number would have been $14.97 million).
If Solai signs with another team, it could possibly change the draft plans.
Several league sources have said that the Dolphins, who will have about $16 or $17 in salary cap space depending on where the number is set, are saving their money to make a big run at Peyton Manning if he is cut this week by the Colts (Sports Illustrated’s Peter King predicted today that the Dolphins would offer Manning more guaranteed money than the Redskins) and won’t make any other big free agent moves until his situation is settled.
And the Dolphins, in need of a pass rusher for their new 4-3 defense, won’t get the chance to speak with several of the league’s top players. The Lions used their franchise tag on budding star Cliff Avril, the Cardinals used theirs on former University of Miami star Calais Campbell and the Colts used theirs on speedy pass rusher Robert Mathis, while close to completing a long-term deal with him as well.
Houston did not use the franchise tag on Mario Williams, but he will likely be too pricey for the Dolphins.
I was hoping we could land one of the good FA pass rushers, but I figured they would get tagged or resigned. S--t, the draft is wide open.

I was against the manning idea at first, but as time goes on and i read more about it, i'm a lot more onboard about it now.

brandon27subscriberI really hope its a smokescreen, all these reports that we're saving money to throw at Peyton... Sure, if he's 100% healthy and plays like the Peyton we're used to its a great move short term, but in 2-3 years... then what? Also, if we had a team that could contend and win the Super Bowl next season, with Petyon... I'd be for it as well. I don't think we're that team. We still need to build around him. Just... the whole idea of it, especially given his health just doesn't sit well with me.
As for the tag... No big deal really. Little surprised they havent locked up Soliai already though. Maybe they're looking at other options, or letting him test the market with the intent of giving Miami the last chance...

Boik14subscriberDont know why this is a big deal. The last 3 4-3 Super Bowl winning teams were the NYG, Colts and Saints and none really had bigtime DT's. I like Soliai as a 3-4 nose but to spend 10M on a 4-3 DT is silly. Its not like Soliai is Justin Tuck or John Randle in his prime where he gets double digit sacks and can be counted on for countless pressures and hits. I wouldnt resign Langford either for that matter. Both those guys are better suited for the 3-4 and will get paid more then I would want to see us commit to a 4-3 DT. Starks/Odrick/whoever else is fine.

Agreed. Odrick really came on strong last year. Put him next to Starks in the middle and get someone to pair with Wake on the edge and you got a solid 4-3 line.
