Famous people are role models to our children. I really don't think if someone is doing illegal things they should get the phone back, especially if those illegal things are serious.

ok heres the way I look at it after some thought. If he is doing illegal things that effect others then you should report it to the cops. If he is doing illegal things that effect only him then you should return the phone.
Do not ask for money from the press because then you are in the wrong. You are basically extorting this person for your own personal gain.
If you try to sell it back to the person who owns it then that is extortion and illegal.

Granted, if there were things on there of people getting hurt and such, that's one thing. Then you go to the POLICE.

Also, now that they have your email address and you've admitted to having the phone (and what's on it), they could pursue legal avenues should you attempt to sell or distribute the information on it. If you attempt to extort them, expect a visit from the FBI.

If you really hate the guy and/or he's being a prick about it, destroy the phone and throw it out.

COD via FedEx (so you have tracking) is probably the best option.

If it has any chance of effecting others, no matter how small, and it is illegal you should turn it in to the cops. That's just my opinion, but no matter how small the chance is you hear stories all the time about how one persons mistake ruins the life of an innocent person.

As for the phone, I would tell him to mail you a UPS or FedEx return label for the box. He can do it online and it'll probably only cost 8-10 bucks.

You should not be inconvenienced by this A-Hole. Make him do the work to get his property back. As far as the illegal stuff, posting them online (anonoymously) might be funny. It'll make him think twice before leaving his phone somewhere and being a dick about it.

You could always play a fun game of taking it apart, and then sending it back to him piece by piece each month...although shipping may get expensive.
