Gase is all in on Tannehill so let the chips fall where they may.

I'm not that worried about Brock since we'd just go into Jay Cutler mode where every play has one simple read and we get the ball out quick. That's not how I want to see us play but it can work with 20+ hand offs a game and another 5-6 screen passes. And honestly, that would be the identical game plan with one of the top QB rookies so I don't really see what it changes if RT goes down. We're playing ultra-conservative either way.

I am so excited to see Tannehill in action though- he stuck to Gase like glue on the sidelines last year and that had to be valuable. I think he's going to have a fantastic year.

 

I have always been one of RT17s big supporters on the board, and that hasn't changed. I really, really like the guy and want him to be our QB for the next half dozen years or so. He's been handicapped by poor coaching and poor teammates for so long, that he really deserves the chance to be able to break out with all of the good ones he's surrounded by now.

I think that as long as he isn't victim to another freak injury, then he should really put up the best numbers than any Dolphins QB not named Dan Marino ever has. Oh wait, he's already done that. Three times. I should say that I expect him to put up career numbers this year. Something along the lines of 4300 yards and 35 TD passes.

As for Osweiler, I guess we'll see. He looked like a very solid player a few years ago in Denver. And I've heard and read from football people in the media that he was a really, really awful fit, both in personality and skill set, with Houston. He and Bill O'Brien absolutely hated one another, and the things that Brock is good at aren't the ones that O'Brien wanted him to do. Hence, the disaster there and the quick trade away.

As our backup QB, at 27 years old, on a league minimum contract, I really don't see why all the people are complaining. Hopefully, the only times Brock comes into the game are in the 4th quarter when we're ahead by three touchdowns. If he does play, then I think he'll be ok.

At the end of the day, 2018 is a huge year for a lot of people. A signifigant portion of the veteran roster could be let go if it all goes South, including Tannehill. But right now, I think that's unlikely.

 

The Eagles might argue with you since they did just fine with their backup QB. Of course I do agree that most teams suffer a severe drop in QB play if they lose their starting QB.

I am one of those who has never been real high on Tannehill and I see him as nothing but a QB who
is no better than the rest of the mediocre QB’s in the NFL and certainly not a franchise type QB. The Dolphins needed to draft his replacement in this draft and I think they will regret seeing the Cardinals make the trade to move ahead of them and draft Rosen.

I think by the 2019 draft, the Dolphins FO will be looking to upgrade from Tannehill and they will select a QB in the first round next year.

 

Tannehill was playing very well in the games leading up to his knee injury. Well enough that he deserves this year to see if it was as many believe bad coaching that let him down or if he just cant get it done. I think this is his prove it year. And frankly, I don't think any of these 1st round QB's in this draft are all that but I did like Rosen the most.

As is evident they made a huge mistake not getting Tannehill to have the knee surgery after the initial injury. Completely derailed the season last year.

 

I'm almost of the opinion that it worked out for both sides that he was re-injured. Gase wasn't on the hot seat and fighting for his job and Tannehill got an additional season of non-contact rehab to strengthen his knee.

 

Anyone who knows anything about anything knows that any job...private sector, military or for the sake of this conversation professional football player...any job is 90% mental and only 10% physical. Once you start messing with a person’s head, you’re going to start messing with his performance. If you truly think about it and look at yourself you know I’m right. That being said...

Gase is all in on Tannehill. He didn’t draft a young stud lurking over his shoulder worrying about whether or not he was one bad pass or one interception away from losing his job and having that mess with his head. Tannehill comes into this season knowing he has the full faith and backing of the organization and I would argue THAT will make him play even better...knowing good and well the Dolphins could have drafted any of those rookie quarterbacks and declined to do so.

Agreed, but the counter to that is drafting a new QB could give Tannehill the push he's never had here. The job was pretty much handed to him and he's never had any legitimate competition because Matt Moore was happy to pick up a seven figure deal to spend most of his time holding a clipboard and working on his tan.

Drafting or adding legitimate competition can actually help some players because it forces them to get better and produce. It gives them that added incentive to lock down their position. Look at how well Alex Smith played last season with Mahomes in the wings. Granted the Chiefs traded Smith, but had he done for them what Foles did for the Eagles, then it's quite possible Smith would still be their quarterback and not the Redskins' quarterback.

For me, part of the problem we've had is that we've handed everything to Tannehill on a silver platter and treated him like he's Dan Marino. When he's not really done anything to warrant such treatment. If the guy can't handle competition and breaks, that's not a great sign. The best can handle competition and overcome it.

 

I'm a big fan of Tannehill, very smart QB with an innate attribute for high accuracy of his passes. That said, I believe with Gase's strong QB-centric approach, there may be too much riding on the QB's shoulders here.

The running game and the defense, which is built to play with a lead, is solely reliant on the high execution and performance of the offense, particularly the passing game.

 

I personally think he's going to be fine. I made a bold prediction before the draft that we'd draft Josh Rosen....We obviously didn't and now none of that matters. Tannehill is going to be our guy once again and the only thing I can do is support it 100%. I honestly didn't like any of these QB's in the draft over Tannehill anyway. I think he's going to have a heck of a season, and I think we're going to be a playoff team next season as long as he stays healthy. Tannehill was so close to really blossoming before his injuries took place. Who knows how much further along he'd be had he just stayed healthy. He's one of, if not the hardest working player(s) on this roster, and while he may not have the talent of Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees, he's certainly worth keeping around as the starter for one more season to see if he can finally deliver.
Keep in mind not every path to greatness/success is the same. It takes some guys longer to get there, and while I don't see a superstar franchise QB in Tannehill, I do see a Quarterback that can get a team to a Super Bowl and after that anything can happen. If you would have asked me if I thought Nick Foles was going to be a Super Bowl winning Quarterback a year ago or that Case Keenum or Blake Bortles could take a team a game away from a Super Bowl, I would have laughed out loud and said "**** NO".

 

Despite what many proclaim in the NFL being a passing league, and in many aspects it does hold true, how much is predicated on running the ball efficiently and stopping the run. The Eagles, for example as Sb champs, were #2 in the league in rushing yards per carry and were #7 in the league for rushing yards per attempt and #1 in the league for total rushing yards allowed.

Vikings and jags also helped carry their average QB's being the #1 and #2 defenses in points scored. They were defenses built to stand alone, and not built to play with the lead as our defense has.

We haven't had anyone with that kind of talent since Dan Marino - which kinda sums up why we're a consistently bad to bang average franchise, year in, year out. I'd love to see a QB with that type of talent playing in the aqua and orange but it never seems to happen here the way it does elsewhere.

 

I spent the day trimming back overgrown trees, digging weeds out of flower beds and spreading about 40 bags of mulch. It sure didn't feel 10% physical on my end...my back begs to differ! And that was my day off!

Which of the post 1st round QBs did you like over what they have?

 

I wasn't advocating for a 1st round QB. I'm all in on Tannehill for this year, but he needs somebody besides Osweiler and Fales behind him. The best teams in the league are always drafting and developing QBs behind their starters. It's a strategy that I think the Dolphins should adapt too.

 

Believe it or not I'm with you 100% in regards to your philosophy on defenses. There are probably 100's of posts around here of me talking about how Super Bowl winners have great defenses more often than they have great offenses.

However, can you explain a little bit more as to what makes Miami's defense a "play with the lead" defense? I mean, defenses are supposed to stop the other team from scoring, right? How is playing with the lead, for a defense, any different than playing without the lead?

 

To be fair, most of those teams don't end up using the guys they groomed. NE and GB are the only two in recent memory who consistently take shots on QB's and ended up having to use them. For NE, that worked out, mainly due to coaching. In GB, those other QB's have been failures; going back to Brian Brohm. Philly brought Foles in but even after a Super Bowl victory, Wentz is the guy (although Wentz has shown more than Tannehill to this point). Good teams tend to expend significant resources on the QB position, but not necessarily by constantly cycling through the lower end of their QB room.

They tend to succeed by expending resources on marquee players or players with potential (Seahawks signing Flynn and drafting Wilson/Washington taking Griffin III and Cousins in the same draft). Taking a flyer on a 5th round QB with little fanfare and signing Osweiler aren't the moves that improve the QB room and Miami, outside of trading up in the draft or making a run for Cousins, didn't really have much of a chance to improve the room.

 

I'm wondering whether Fales is further along in the development than we think and has a legitimate chance of beating out Brock for the role of backup. Hard to know what the coaching see during the season but could we be in for a surprise come camp?
