I was very shocked by these numbers comparing Joe philbins last full year and Gase in 2018.
Offence YPG PTS Def YPG PTS
Philbin 14th 350.1 24.3 12th 343 23.3
Gase 29th 302.1 21.1 30th 402 26.7
For some reason I thought we were just as bad as philbins team but now I find we are worse.

I think these numbers are an indictment of Tannenbaum more than anything. The roster is devoid of talent on the lines, linebacker, and spots in the secondary. Poor drafting, outside of X and Minkah, have really hurt us. We’ve done well finding offensive skill position talent, but none of that matters if you can’t win either line of scrimmage.
And don’t mistake that as a pass for Gase and Burke. They’ve both underwhelmed as well. Gase’s offensive plan is simply not working and Burke is just a hot mess. -

Ha Ha! I must say that this is hilarious. I actually didn't hate Philbin as much as most people around here. He too had a bunch of f'd up players and holes on the roster. I'm not saying we should have kept him, but I do think it wasn't as simple as some made it out to be. Maybe Gase should tattoo those numbers to his f'n forehead for motivation.

Philbin has no playoff record. That alone should buy Gase more time if you want something tangible to compare. 0-1 is better than not going to the dance at all.
-
Well.. it's not up to us anyway, but going once to the playoffs while having 3 consecutive years of bad performances on both offense and defense isn't for me a reason to give the guy more time.
Offseason starting to become more and more interesting actually. I really want to know what Ross will do. -
My minimum requirement for the off season:
- New DC.
- Gase hands off playcalling to the OC.
- find someone who can coach OL. I was reading last seasom that there are former all-pros giving private coaching clinics to current NFL linemen. I want one of those guys, someone the OL trust will develop their technique, not some martinet who yells a lot on the practice field.
What should happen:
- full assessment of Gase as a coach. (Between now and the end of the season). There is now sufficient evidence for the “no” case to have validity. I understand the “yes” case, but the assessment should hear both the “yes” and the “no”. Gase should only be kept if there is genuine evidence that “yes” is stronger than “no”.
- full assessment of potential HCs. Especially co-ordinators of teams with deep playoff credentials. (Except NE, there is no evidence that any BB disciple has been worth more than a 2 week old gas station burrito)
- if change is to happen don’t rush it. Many new HCs that are signed are those available early in the off season, not the best candidates.Phin McCool, Drizzy, resnor and 5 others like this. -

Going into next year it's hard to imagine a scenario where we do not have Tannehill as our QB. Not thrilled about it but realistically I don't see it changing. If in fact you are stuck with Thill then you may as well keep Gase around too. I agree with Pauly assessment above though. Don't see anything to argue about.

they are both not head coaches and should stay coordinators, who cares about the comparison. They both won the same amount = nothing!!!
whens the last time we won a playoff game? in the 90's? that's all the comparison should go towards, is when we actually won something not got to the playoffs and got blown out by a much better team!! -

Stats are great, but we shouldn't base all of our decisions on them. In this case, Gase is clearly doing a much better job (given the injuries) than our record indicates. He has only had his starting QB for half the time here and the offensive line is mush.
So if we've been badly injured the last two years, and for the last two years we've struggled, we should look to get healthier going forward instead of blaming Gase for things that were out of his control. It's tough to compete in the NFL with half a roster. Go ask Philly.Tin Indian likes this. -

Here is the thing with people on this board. When Gase was hired people wrote articles proclaiming that Gase is the next Shula, and the Gase is a genius "narrative" was born. For whatever reason, the legend proceeded the man. Perhaps people found comfort in thinking that for once we were ahead of everyone.
In order to be flexible in any walk of life, you need to be willing to change your thinking when the data changes. For whatever reason, being a flip flopper has become a slur, but as the data and evidence changes, so should your opinion.
Just looking at our offensive and defensive rankings, the data is clearly telling you something. But again, people revert back to those original posts, and double down on Gase being a genius. The excuses flow. We hear about injuries. "If player X would've been healthy, yada yada." Here is the deal. Every team suffers injuries. Every single one. The expectation should NEVER be, "if everyone was healthy..."
Look around the league. The 49ers lost their starting QB early on and their starting RB before the season started. Rueben Foster was cut midway through the season. They are 13th in total offense.
Nobody has been hurt more than the Redskins by injuries in the last two years. Josh Johnson was able to literally come off the streets and have 94 QB rating. That to me is a real sign of coaching genius.
The Raiders who are old, rebuilding, lost their starting RB, and traded their best WR. They have 600 yards of more total offense than we do.
"Yeah, but all that matters is wins and losses." Not really. We have just four teams ranked below us in offense. Two of them happen to be in our division. In fairness to them, they are in rebuild mode. We also beat Oakland - also in rebuild mode. We beat the Titans whose starting QB got hurt in the middle of the longest game in NFL history.
"But Gase got us to the playoffs. Certainly that makes him a genius." Again, a top running back fell into his lap. He did the OBVIOUS thing in running him till the wheels fell off. Every coach in the league would have done the same thing. Mind you, our genius elected to start Arian Foster over him to start the season. In a move of pure brilliance, he could not find a way to coexist with Ajayi and ran him out of town.
So here we are. People are suggesting taking away his play calling duties and essentially holding onto the final straws of the Gase legacy. It is so apparent that the reality of Gase never lived up to the expectation. The facts are telling you the truth; his reputation is telling you a myth.
But then again, he is a genius.Electric Boogaloo likes this. -
I don't care how good a coach is, if his talent isn't good his gameplan won't be able to function.
If you can't protect long enough to go intermediate and can't create quick separation with your athleticism on top of that you will have a hard time scoring.
Add to that a defense constantly putting you in a hole and thats a recipe for disaster.Electric Boogaloo and The_Dark_Knight like this.
