It's disappointing but I don't have a huge problem with it right now. The Dolphins pretty much give snaps to guys who earn it in practice. Some rookies learn faster than others and a lot of these guys have been hurt most of the year.
If this continues to be the case next year, then it's time to panic. -
Drafting is why Ireland should be fired and should have been fired years ago.

All true, one caveat is our top 4 picks all came into camp with injuries lingering from their college seasons.
And Jordan did cause the Int that Jones housed for a pick 6.DOLPHAN1 likes this. -
He also forgot the pressure on Flacco that led to a pic six and let the Phins back in the game. But besides Jordan and Don Jones, no one has made a impact play.

Judging a rookie class not even at the midway point of the first season is really stupid.

Not judging , but providing the report to date . We didn't need the legend to tell us this draft class has been unproductive to date mind you.
This is not to say the picks won't develop and produce . I really like/liked many of the selections , but imo no one can argue that they have been among the better producing rookie class to date. -
When Taylor did play, he was being roasted like a turkey -

Gil Brandt is an old timer, so he must think that sacks are the only way of evaluating a pass rusher.
Dion Jordan has the 8th highest pass rush productivity of any 4-3 defensive end that has played at least 25% of his team's snaps. His pass rush productivity is almost equal to Greg Hardy's (11.6-11.8). Dion is making something happen when he's on the field. He's either forcing an interception by pressuring the quarterback, making a key stop in the running game, or showing the versatility to drop back into coverage.
The problem is, the Dolphins only play him sparingly.Phyl, fins1, unluckyluciano and 5 others like this. -
These kind of discussions about Ireland and the draft are becoming a broken record. I am in no position to say I could do better and I don't want to disrespect the effort in scouting. However, one has to come to a point where the best grade you can give Ireland on drafting is an incomplete for his entire stay, if not an incompetent.

It's not a surprise, the Dolphins haven't had a good draft since at least...2004 maybe? Isn't that the last time we drafted a player who lasted past his rookie contract? As for a great draft, well you probably have to go back to the 90s for that.
We'll see if this one is actually any different in a year or so. Jordan will probably be something. Not hopeful for the majority of the draft considering how poor they've been at it for over a decade. Which of course makes it no wonder why they can't win a playoff game, or even make it there when they don't have a cupcake schedule.ASOT likes this. -
Dion Jordan has forced TWO interceptions by making amazing pass rush plays against defense. He's only got one sack in 7 games, yes, but he's getting great pressure. He looks good.
-
Criticizing this draft class because of Dion Jordan is ****ing idiotic. I think he's been great.
Criticizing the coaches for not getting him on the field is totally within reason.
The draft looks terrible but, it's midway through the first year. Judge it in 3 years.
Ireland still needs to be fired.ASOT, NolesNPhinsFan and Rocky Raccoon like this. -
I'm always looking for ways to indict the GM, it's just my nature cause I always want the best evaluator being our GM, so I have no connection or loyalty in that dept, however, I do have to give a GMs players enough time to see if he is good, and I say that because I'm of the belief that Irish should be judged after Parcells left, this is his third year, and if his collection of players do not come out 2maro and play like freaking crazed dogs, the questions should be tough and the evaluation of his job should be hot as hell..
I said all offseason, we should know by midseason this year which direction we should go with Ireland..I stand behind that statement and we should know a lot by this time 2maro nite, my expectations for this years squad was to improve on last years record. -
-
Gil Brandt has become a senile old bat who doesn't seem to know sh** about football anymore. A couple weeks ago he declared Jadeveon Clowney and Morgan Bresslin [USC] as his midseason All American defensive ends, all 6 sacks of them combined at the time.

More often than not you find out early if you have playmakers or not, yet people never want to face reality and say that other than Jordan, the rest are failing the eyeball test thus far.
And yes, it's ok to say that. -
I'm interested to see how other teams rookies are faring regarding starting, playing time and stats. I think our rookie class has been totally dissapointing. Jordan should be starting imo but he isn't. That's on the HC. I would have expected at least 2 or 3 rookies to be making some impact. Up to now (Jordan excused to a degree) NOTHING.

Ireland has had complete control over the draft for the past three years. Over that time, he has drafted one player who would be considered a top player at his position, Mike Pouncey.
Other than Pouncey, Ireland has drafted a lot of mediocre players, who while some are starting for a very mediocre Miami Dolphin team, would be backups on the better teams in the NFL or wouldn't make one of these teams to begin with.
Tannehill may or may not eventually end up being a productive QB in the NFL, but right now he is probably the best of the rest, when looking at the players taken in the drafts since 2011.
When you consistently miss drafting impact players in the draft, you end up with bad or mediocre teams, year after year. There is a reason this team has been a below 500 team over the past four plus years and being totally ineffective in the NFL draft is the main reason this team continues to struggle, year in and year out.ASOT likes this. -
The protection Ireland gets on this board is mind-boggling.
His record speaks for itself : 41-46 with one playoff appearance, and that was on a fluke season.
And for those who want to only judge Ireland since Parcells left :16-23 (even worse)
The numbers tell the story, and the excuses and apologies need to stop. How much longer do we need to suffer ? Many of the fans have been calling for his head for a long time. However there is a cadre of people on this board that will go to any lengths to continue to make excuse after excuse for the man. Enough already. The man is BAD at his job, or at least bad at being the Miami Dolphins GM, its not the job for him. How can one argue with the numbers, they are glaring ! -
-
Again the record speaks for itself. -
Irish drafted guys that best fit what the coaches wanted. Those were going to sit and learn while the establish veteran plays out his final year(s) on his contract. Aside from DJ Irish didn't reach for guy just to say we got a guy. Quite a different track from what Irish did under Parcells/Sparano.
I'm seeing the main problem Sherman. -

I like Dion Jordan and think he'll be a great player. Unfortunately he's getting the Cam Wake rookie year treatment with the low snap count.

And to say that Dion Jordan is struggling?....
Is this guy for real?...Does he watch any game tape? He hasnt been on the field because he needs to improve sealing the edge to become a better defender against the run. But when he is in....Dion Jordan is hardly struggling. -

But I do agree with your assessment of being patient with our draft picks. Dion Jordan is going to be an absolute stud...and I think youll find very few people that will disagree with that statement. -
It also doesn't address the reality of how many play makers you expect to get out of a draft realistically, either. But thank you for sharing what you feel like a draft should be like, in your gut, unburdened from any sort of greater pursuits of empiricism. -
