Been hearing some stuff about this dude, nat Moore was gushing bout him as well.

Would be a real nice suprise if this kid can flash big time all around tight end ability..

It is sometimes very hard to project how much quickness a player can gain by losing 25 lbs, maybe this was one case where the player just didnt carry that kind of weight around well..I think you could see signs of him lumbering with it in college ( imagine wake at 270) and with these reports and some other things I saw, he seemed to be getting off the line in a more explosive way..

    Anyhow, encouraging reports..

its a shame Keller didn´t do any work, so we really don´t know how much of his playing time was because of that

True dat..I would think that Egnew now has a new competition buddy..

As I mentioned in a thread about Dion, he looks good and could be a fixture here for awhile.

I worry about any hope he'll become a featured #1 tight end. I don't think that's who he is.

I think he can be that #2 TE, that blocking TE who's good enough at catching and just nifty enough to get goal line, leak, seam plays to punish a D for overplaying the run.

He could be a very big contributor in that role.

But if you see him post some stats that way, get excited and decide this guy is the next #1 TE on your team I think you are disappointed.

He'll never be Gronk, Vernon Davis, or any of those. Not even close, IMO. His ceiling is more like a Fasano than an Antonio Gates.

And if you can get a guy like Fasano as your #2 TE on the cheap you are happy. If he is your #1, then you need to upgrade. Especially in this offense.

We haven't had a good TE since Keith Jackson.

Egnew and Sims are different styles of TE. I don't think they are in direct competition.

I think Sims has no one like him to compete with and is a virtual certainty to make this squad unless he screws up majorly.

Egnew is going to be given the year to develop behind Keller then replace him as a receiving TE. Keller is here to mentor his replacement IMO.

I'm pretty comfortable with what Keller brings to the table. Nice to see the kids duking it out.

The 2nd tight end position should properly counter the skillset of Keller..An overall skillset.

Maybe I just need to get a jersey that says Dion and leave the number blank.

But he still was good, Dan's favorite target.

Shows you how great he was, the guy had minimal weapons his whole career.

Now...I didn't get to see Marino in his hey day...But "minimal weapons his whole career"?

Couple guys named Mark ring a bell?

Good point, but overall, thruout his career, he didn't have much.

I wouldn't say that, the Marks, Nat Moore, Irving Fryer, Mcduffie, Duriel Harris and Tony Nathan and Keith Jackson. Those are just a few pretty good targets off the top of my head.

    Keith Byars too.
But then I was thinking about the run game he never really had.

The run game was iffy much of the time (IMO partly Dan's own fault), but he certainly had receiving weapons and quite a few offensive weapons in general.

No, what Marino almost never had was a complementary running attack. He was great enough to make whatever receivers he had look like all pros, but he could never get any balance in his offenses, partly because of his inane skillset as a passer and partly the staff never put a good enough running game around him...

Yeah, but other than the Marks Bros for a couple of years, the rest of his talent was so-so. Even Jackson was past his prime for us...

Marks brothers were really good, got a few good years out of an older fryar, Mcduffie was a good player, no running backs to speak of, average tight ends as a whole..below average overall imo

As nice as Polite was for short yardage situations, I'm going with since Keith Byars.
