It's put together in such a way that the entertainment aspects limit what you can really take-in so re-watching from as many angles as possible is mandatory if you're trying to learn something, particularly in regard to how a play is developing down-field.
On CBS, FOX and NFLN, you basically only see the pocket so it's easy to a good sense of which linemen are doing well and which are not and how the QB is responding to the action around him.
Much of the time I watch casually and for enjoyment (more or less ball-watching) and try to take in as much as possible but if I'm trying to really understand something, I'm going to re-watch a play several times in order to carefully observe each player's movements.
Most of the time with the Dolphins, it's pretty clear pretty quickly why something didn't work: Dallas Thomas misses a block, Damien Williams drops a perfect pass, etc. :)finwin likes this. -

Alcohol is involved. A lot of begging too. Mostly begging:
"Come on Tanny, we need a first"
"Throw the damn flag"
"Cmon D, gimme a stop here"
"Do not call time out here"
"Do not take a knee here"
"They're holding Wake!"
"One butt cheek equals two feet!"Jaydog57, FinsPensFan, Alex13 and 3 others like this. -

Seriously, almost every Sunday I go to my buddy's condo. He picks me up every week so we can get ripped and then I take a cab home. Being a Miami fan, this really helps. You all know whats up. As a Canadian I get access to live games via the GamePass service. So, Miami is on the big screen (each week, regardless) and then we watch 4 other games with game pass that is being streamed from the laptop in the picture.

Delaware Lotto has NFL parlays.
So I go to Delaware Park Casino "Sportsbook" to watch.
Basically plop myself in front of the Dolphins and watch about 90% of the game, or until I get repulsed by them.
I find gambling really takes my edge off of my hatred for this team.
When they lose all my anger doesn't go completely towards them. It may go towards another team who lost a bet for me. Or it is soothed by a winning bet.
What I'm trying to say is gambling fixes everything.Fin-Omenal likes this. -

Like others have said there is plenty of drinking going on, I smoke a few bowls, and I am constantly doing superstitious things that i like to think works but in reality I know never works, things like sitting a certain way, turning my hat around, eating certain food, changing clothes, taking off articles of clothing like my shirt or one sock, changing alcoholic beverages, yelling, being quiet, cracking my fingers, biting my nails, combing the beard I use to have, etc. This was a good therapy session, now that I realize how crazy I am after reading this I think I just talked myself out of all this crazy behavior that never works. I'm bringing back the beard next season though, it had a pretty good run of luck but it gave me yet another reason to hate the cheatriots more than I already do if that is possible.

Realistically to answer the question without a joking (which is hard) I watch the quarterback on each play. Obviously if its a run play i'll watch the offensive line and the running back, but for the most part my eyes are on the QB. I guess you could call this "ball watching" (no homo). The quarterback tells me everything I need to know within that few seconds the play is alive.
Basically from all the years of watching football (but never playing it, aside from backyard stuff), this is what I have figured out,
1.If the QB has time to throw the ball in the pocket, 85% of the time its going to be a completed pass (unless its a deep throw and then that percentage goes down to about 50).
2. If the QB is under duress, pressure, bad snap, etc he's likely to complete maybe 35% of his passes if talented enough.
Those two things right there tell me basically everything I need to know about how the game is going to end up going.
As for me personally...How I watch a game......
I'm superstitious so if we make a great play or get a nice long run, big first down, etc...I will stay in the exact same bodily position I was in when that positive awesome play took place until no more good plays are made. If my hand happens to be on my balls when Tannehill completes a 15 yard pass to Landry, then that is where my hand will stay until the next bad play. I believe in keeping the momentum going so I will almost always do a set of 50 push ups after each touchdown (as long as we are still in the game). Last year when we beat Atlanta, (The TD pass to Sims) I was holding my newborn baby for basically the entire second half of that game...And we won! Same for when we beat New England last season. Not sure where I went wrong, maybe I should hold him during every game, but I can't keep doing that if we aren't winning games. I'm not trying to hold him when he's 25 and we still suck.dolphin25, RickyNeverInhaled and djphinfan like this. -
I figured out this season, it doesn't matter what I'm wearing, or if I watch standing or sitting, go to church or not, or drink tequila or vodka. It turns out none of it makes them win :(

I'm a ball watcher. I don't notice the holds and OL/DL penalties as well as some other posters/fans. I'm watching for the big play all the time. On Defense I watch the ball and the DL. Esp #91.

I usually watch the game seated, with a 12 pack of Guinness, tortilla chips and a bowl of freshly made pico de gallo
