By respectable, I mean going deep into the playoffs and maybe contend for the Super Bowl once in a while. I, as many of you do, long for the days of Shula/Marino, etc. I am tired of the team I have followed since the early 70's being a perennial afterthought. It is as though every year we are just bad enough to not make the playoffs, and just good enough to not get a decent draft pick that will be franchise worthy. How many years until we are at the top of the league?

Easy answer would be when Philbin is gone and/or when Ross sells the team. Hopefully, its after the former that we become relevant again because I don't see the latter happening anytime soon.

I voted 5 years. I see us in sort of the same ways as the 49ers when Harbaugh took over. We have talent on the roster with a QB that can make a run in the playoffs, but we just need a change in the coaching ranks to utilize and develop that talent. Harbaugh took mostly what was already in place in SF and made them contenders. Talent wise I think we're ALMOST in that category. Another solid draft or 2 and a couple of smart (not splashy) FA signings and I believe the Dolphins are close o contending with a competent HC.

its up to whoever is making the talent evaluation decision, once we get that right, we have the best chance...hopefully hickey is just old school and isn't a tech guy who wants to dable into stuff that will take him away from the film room...

Whenever Philbin is fired and if we hire the right coach. So far its been a swing and a miss replacing Shula.

The incompetency in the draft room over the past 20 years has been just terrible..like really bad.

It might happen in the next 2-3 seasons. We've been close, we just didn't have the right quarterback since '08. Unfortunately for us Chad Henne didn't pan out, then we had Matt Moore who is a solid backup but not a starter. Ryan Tannehill looks light years better than what we've had to deal with for a long time. Honestly this offense is coming along once we get another receiver in the draft that doesn't quit on us. There are a lot of good pieces on the Dolphins and when it all comes together with Philbin or the next coach we'll start to surprise them

1 day with the right hire at the HC and GM positions. Remember when Parcell's took over and the Phins were suddenly the talk of the NFL?
Granted Parcell's was ultimately a dead stinky fish. But the Dolphins were getting a buzz of competency and respectability.
Philbin and his staff are seatwarmers............. -
I believe we have a good core group of young players at a few positions... we just have to keep developing them, drafting well, and making good overall decisions in the offseason. Oh, and actually finding a someone who can coach. I might have answered 2 if the question was "how long until we make the playoffs", but since it asked how long until we are at the top, I'm saying 5...

If someone could let me know when Ross is finally going to sell the team, I will have a better chance of predicting when this team will once again become relevant in the playoffs.
I have zero faith in Ross's ability as an NFL owner and as long as he continues to be the owner of the Dolphins, I see nothing but more mediocrity in the future for this organization. -

20 years. It's going to take a long time to shed the stink that the Dolphins have been wallowing in for the past 15 years or so and become "respectable." It's going to take multiple division titles and playoff appearances for people to start taking the franchise seriously every single season and not expecting them to fail and underwhelm in the spotlight.
-
If people predict next year, they are totally ignoring the black hole void we have at HC. Next year is out. Maybe 2016 though.
-
I also think people are optimistic w the 5 years. Until Ross is not the owner, we will be a bad team.

I agree with the draft being the key. We do not draft well and ultimately it creates setbacks at specific positions year in and year out....most recently being the Dion Jordan selection.

5 years. Enough time for Harbaugh to develop the next Andrew Luck, so Ross will tank the season to get his college QB on his pro team.

I said two years. The reality is though I have no confidence in Philbin what so ever, and even less in Steve Ross. Basically I'm resigned to the fact we will always be on the outside looking in till this team gets the right coach. That could be a long, long time.

We can have all the good drafts we want, but if we keep having coaches not using talent correctly, or putting guys in the wrong position, it won't matter one bit.

Oh and Philbin would have ****ed up Andrew Luck as well. Andrew Luck on this team wouldn't cover up all the wants we have.

I actually prefer where we are right now as a franchise, because we have a QB. We haven't had a losing season the past couple years. Miami has had a chance near the end of the season to make the playoffs, yes we've fell short but it's been better than the years before that. I fully believe we're at the worst case scenario like the Cowboys and break through next season under Philbin or best case scenario falter and then bring in a coach ala Harbaugh and turn this ship around because someone is able to utilize the personnel on this team more effectively.

And btw were already respectable. I realized that when my friends that are Baltimore fans were nervous as s*** before playing us. They saw the talent, we just fell off at the end of the year, again. We're just not elite, but respectable in the true definition of the word, that we are.
