1st round Devante Parker
Tall, athletic, gets up for the jump ball at its highest point and fights for it, good YAC receiver. Good speed, team player, and even has some trash talk in him for the other team. I like the pick.
2nd round Jordan Phillips
Didn't like this pick especially with Denzel Perryman still on the board and was picked right after the Dolphins got Phillips. Phillips by some is lazy and lacks motivation. He also struggles with conditioning. He had trouble finishing games at the collegiate level because of his lack of conditioning. He is big but I think he could shed a few pounds to help with his conditioning. I just thought MLB or CB was a bigger need given the team personnel. I was fine with getting a guard later in the draft. He is an athletic freak for a big man. He can even do a back flip in full pads. For what that is worth. His lack of motivation and conditioning scares me. Plus he had back surgery. But he could pay off big given his size and athleticism. I don't know if he is a day 1 starter over Mitchell and he could actually become a bust. But does have upside. I think he is a boom or bust pick. Hopefully I'm wrong.
4th round pick Jamil Douglas
He played guard and tackle in college. He is athletic and fast for his position but lacks strength. One AFC west scout said he wouldn't draft him because of his lack of strength. I think this guy was a reach pick. Some mocks had him a 5th round pick.
5th round picks Bobby McCain, Jay Ajayi, Cedric Thompson, Tony Lippet
I like Ajayi. He has knee issues but to get him in the 5th round and be that big complimentary back for Miller is great. Some say he is the 3rd or 4th best RB in the draft but the knee issues caused him to slide to the 5th round. Small risk big reward here.
Cedric Thompson, McCain, and Lippet could provide good depth
I think the team having 4 5th round picks should have tried to move up though.
Biggest disappointment of the draft for me was not addressing the struggles at the LB position. Unless if you're ok with injury prone not reliable Misi. Maybe Tripp and McCain can step up this season? I am perplexed at what the team will do at MLB and the other OLB position opposite of Jelani Jenkins. Granted the team has a good defensive line but I think you need something more than inexperience and Misi at the other two LB positions. We shall see.
Overall I wasn't too happy with the draft. I give them a C+. The team still has concerns at CB, LB, and G.

Eh, liked it, think if Parker pans out the rest will be sort of lost in the shuffle
Think Phillips will excel in miami, keep in mind we are now 4 deep at DT.
Also think the Lb thing is a bit overblown, we could very well see Tripp or Hull win the MLB job with Misi moving to his more natural SLB, and Jenkins is a lock at SLB or potentially MLB with McCain or Paysinger stepping in there.
Real problem imo, is we now are so deep on Dline have to wonder if we have over invested resources. -
B... ish.
I think the value was good for a lot of our picks. Outside of the 4th round, I don't think we reached with anyone. I don't love any of our picks, outside of Jay Ajayi. I don't like drafting WR's in round 1 unless there is someone so special, you would be an idiot to pass up on. I don't think that's Parker, despite the fact I think he'll be a productive WR for us. Seeing Jalen Strong be selected in round 3 was surprising, I really liked him a lot. That's why you follow the GB packers model of WR drafting. You wait for them to come to you in that 2nd/3rd round. Jordan Phillips is an interesting pick. 1st round talent drafted in the mid 2nd round is the kind of boom or bust gamble worth taking. That's how you end up with Rob Gronkowski type players. Given his size and strength combo, I think JP is a safe enough pick in that he'll be productive eating space, at worst. I've come around on this pick. Still hate on passing Perryman, especially since Misi only plays 10 or so games a season. Neglecting pass rushers was also a mistake.JJ_79 likes this. -

Right now I give it an incomplete. Give me two years and I'll have a better idea how any of these guys pan out.
Since it is two years since Ireland's last draft in 2013, we can now give that draft class a legitimate grade. For me it would be a D. If not for Jenkins it would be a definite F, but the play of Jenkins last year moves the grade up one notch IMO.Larryfinfan likes this. -
It's an A all day long guys. Don't forget our 3rd turned into Stills too. Real quality that will produce on the field in my opinion. Hard to hate on in my opinion but some will hate anyways.

I didn't see any must haves after the first round so I'm tempted to say that this is just a boring year for the draft in general. If anyone from the later rounds contributes--Ajayi, or McCain maybe, then it'll look better.
I do agree that Phillips is a solid prospect considering who the Dolphins have and what their needs really are. They needed a run stuffer and he's exactly that with a little bit of upside. -
How'd they do:
On a scale of "lamprey" to "bald eagle", with bald eagle being the highest possible score, I gave the 2015 Miami Dolphins draft a "praying mantis".
Though had they taken a flyer on Duke Johnson, I was willing to bump up the score to a "ring-tailed lemur".Fin4Ever, Clark Kent and 305 like this. -
Praying Mantis is way too exciting of a character to describe that draft... Possibly an crazy sloth draft

I wrote this in the senior bowl thread when watching the practices..
''watching the kid jeff Luc from cincy..about 6 foot 260...inside backer running and covering downfield..quick flash.''.
Im gonna go with my instinct, i remember him at the senior bowl and being very impressed with his movement and speed, the 4.6 he ran tells me a lot at that size.
this is a florida state transfer, five star recruit, I'm not sure whats going on off the field, but if he's ready to commit i say he makes this team and surprises..
after 2 games last year he led the fbs in tackles with 30, then check him out against ohio state, also watch how urban meyer seeks him out after the game..
this is a very thick explosive man..watch out misi..
yo like seriously, check this out, watch him run..watch the quickness in his legs.

Absolutely, completely and totally love Parker and being able to get him at #14.
Love trading the third for Stills.
Love getting Ajayi in the 5th round. Absolutely amazing.
Like getting Douglas in the 4th. When you get a potential day one starter down that low, its a good pick.
Like the potential that McCain and Thompson bring. Should be good reserves and ST guys at worst.
Understand the pick of Jordan Phillips and what he can mean to Suh and the DL, and how that helps the run defense. I would have chosen to go another way, but I'm not upset about it.
Also think that as our final pick in the 5th, it was worth a flyer on Lippett to see if we can develop him into a good corner. He should be able to be a gunner on ST in the mean time too, which is important because our WR corps isn't playing ST.
Really like Luc and Hull as UDFA pickups at MLB. Both could have been justified as high as 5th round picks. If one can stick and develop into a starter, its a home run.
Overall, I give them an A-Fin4Ever likes this. -

I really hated taking Parker at 14. I think the Dolphins bought into hype. I see Parker as a third round guy; a posession receiver that will have a hard time getting open in NFL secondaries.
Should have taken the trade down offer from Dallas and drafted Byron Jones.
I don't dislike the Ajayi pick because it came so late. He will probably have a very short career but if he excels for a couple years it ain't bad for where he was picked.
Love the Phillips pick. Guess what happens when you aren't serious about your NFL opportunity and you go Uber driving? That's right, they replace you with a draft pick. Bye bye A.J. Francis. -

It seemed an okay draft. We didn't reach on anyone. God knows, I've given up trying to predict what college players will do in the pros. I am ticked we didn't draft any LBs because we need them badly.
-
If you can imagine a draft class even better than both 1996 and 1997 combined, that would be a meth-crazed slot caliber selection.Fin4Ever likes this. -

I don't know anywhere near enough about college players to have any business handing out a grade for the draft. Reading other opinions on the players and the draft class, it looks like there is a good chance that Miami came away with at least 2-4 guys who will be able to contribute immediately and that's all you can ask for. Hickey and Tannebaum seem to be making up a competent FO and competent is so much better than where this team was. I won't mention the name as I know how much you guys hate how I mention Ireland all the time. Whoops.

Jordan Phillips was not necessary when we could have had a LB that could be a 10 year plug and play pro. WR in the first round was another thing we didn't necessarily need. I thought those two positions were ones we shored up prior to the draft, but I'm not too caught up in it. If Phillips helps the run defense, good. I think Parker will help the special teams more than the O. There are only so many balls to go around. I liked the CB's and RB we got.
A solid C+ for now, could be a B if 4 players come out as good starters. -
-
C plus. Parker would have to be the next Andre Johnson to justify spending a first rounder on him to me. Even though it cost us a lb or better ol, I liked the Phillips pick. The guard is an average prospect in my book but he fits the scheme so who knows. I liked the ajayi pick and the slot CB is probably a good fit. Didn't like the Michigan kid. I'm with DJ, I think the udfas are pretty good pickups. Hopefully one of them pans out. Overall very boring draft for me. Phillips a backup for now is my favorite pick

I'll tell you why I like this draft. Dolphins instead of doing the "fan thing" of plugging holes with available talent, actually went and accentuated strength with best player available.
WR and DT were not the biggest needs, in fact, you could have gone into the season with the talent on hand. But the Dolphins decided to invest their biggest assets into potentially making strong unites even better.
Jay Ajayi was another player that accentuated a productive unit last season.
They still went and drafted some need to round up their draft, but the focus was looking to make strong units dominant and that IMO has the potential of paying off big time.
I actually think they got at least 4 players that will have good impact on the team this season. I think Douglas will win the starting left guard spot, and all 3 of Parker, Phillips and Ajayi will have significant impact this season.cuchulainn and mlb1399 like this. -

*All of this assumes he'll play up to his ability.Fin4Ever likes this. -
I like this draft a lot even though it busted a number of my assumptions. It also seem that team was able to draft for need/player fit while obtaining great value.
- Parker - my assumption was Landry's practice habits would allow the team to go cheap by trying to develop a few late round picks/udfa's. However, that method does not get you ideal height and catch radius. Brett Favre benefited from this with Sidney Rice; a year after looking like Chad Pennington with the Jets WRs.
- Phillips - thought team would go cheap w money and picks, including having Shelby bulk up. Now, I realize that last season's lack of inside bulk impacted ability to play wide and Coyle's desire to dial-up DB blitzes. The criticism for Phillips reminds me of Tim Bowens; country-strong and one not to seek out attention. I was at the helicopter catch game when Bowens literally stopped the Jets offense with 2 backfield stops in consecutive plays.
- McCain - expected an 1st round CB to save Grimes from covering those large (mostly NFC) WR. To pass the Pats and win the division, maybe another inside CB is more valuable.
- Lippett - thought Hickey might find a tweener WR/TE. Perhaps, he found a tweener redzone CB/WR. Parcell's Jets had smaller CBs and success when Marcus Coleman substituted for redzone plays.
- UDFA LB recruiting class - while I wasn't sold on drafting a LB high, I never expected for the team to obtain so many potential depth chart LBers. Luc has the legs of a pass rusher to absorb a blow while maintaining stride toward passer and could land a specialist role if Phillips develops quickly.
