"The prime issue beyond convincing Harbaugh could be convincing Harbaugh's expected choice of a personnel man, Tom Gamble"
"Last winter, Ross received permission from Philadelphia to interview Gamble for the vacant general manager's job and, "he was going to be a top, top choice,'' a source said."
"Be clear on this: Gamble is a top talent himself. He helped build San Francisco and Philadelphia's rosters."

Why did gamble turn us down? Wasn't it because his dad was ill or something like that?

But, if he has confidence in a new coach and is there at the start, he knows he has 3-5 years to build a winner. And, more than likely will have more control with a coach who has the ear of the owner. I doubt a new coach (unless he's lame) is going to come into an organization with Aponte or others having any real control.

Would be a pair of awesome hires.

Its like Christmas in mah pants.

I think there is most likely a good reason why a Superbowl team enthusiastically lets go of their head coach.

Harbaugh, Gamble, Lazor at OC, Sexy Rexy as DC,
Rex did work with John Harbaugh...there is a connect...maybe.
This would really be a Riley-esque off-season. A double rainbow, if you will. -
Man, this would be the greatest news and definately hires in ages and ages..Come on Ross..you can do it..offer them both at least a 1/4 more in salary than any other coach or GM is making and make it happen! Wow, that would be so awesome.

Hmm, cannot say I put this yr on Hickey at all, think he did a good to really good job this past offseason.
Philbin is debatable, I think the team is disciplined, players have developed (from an objective pov, let's be honest we have not had young talent on the roster like we do now since JJ/Wanny)
Also think Philbin lacks a feel for the game and does not inspire players
Objectively we are not in a terrible position moving forward Philbin deserves credit there, his December record is ATROCIOUSmlb1399 likes this. -
Even though I can NOT stand Rex Ryan. I could certainly live with that coaching staff. I'm just not sold that Harbaugh will keep Lazor if he gets hired as HC. And I doubt Rex would accept our DC position as well. Pipe dreams is what that looks like to me. -

This would probably mean a conversion to a base 3-4 defense and I would love that. My choice for DC would be Kirby Smart of Alabama.
I would move both Mitchell and Starks and give Odrick a contract, sign Kenrick Ellis and Draft Danny Shelton and Henry Anderson. Convert Terrence Fede to a pass rushing 5-tech and perhaps look for another bargain 5-tech in free agency. Suh could probably play 5-tech, he will be cheap, right? -
If worst case scenario is Hickey hires the next HC..what is the downside and upside?
Clean house and toss it into Ross's hands to choose both..downside and upside?
And keep in mind with Harbaugh, he missed spectacularly on Kaepernick's contract, we are coming to the same cross roads with Tannehill -
At first you don't succeed..

Saban came from Bellicheat's tree and seemed to emulate that demeanor. I was really hoping he'd build our team back up and we'd give the Pats a taste of their own medicine. We were finally beginning to get respect back after the miserable Wanny years. That first year under Saban there was a lot of optimism. Once he left I couldn't believe it. All hope I had for this team was sapped instantly. I was somewhat excited about Parcells coming here, but the sting of Saban leaving left me never feeling too optimistic about who this team hires to lead it ever again. I wasn't surprised at all Parcells left and his regime failed. Saban's departure ripped out whatever confidence and respect this team had and was followed by many embarrassing moments, from 1-15 to the current mess we have with Philbin's December swoons. -
The biggest issue with Harbaugh is getting him to leave the Bay Area. Albert Breer noted that while Harbaugh prefers living in the Bay Area he also wants to be one of the highest paid coaches, and Breer isn't sure Oakland will pony up the cash. Should be interesting to watch. -
Jimmy's heart was in it in the beginning. Saban's heart was in it until he realized he picked the wrong QB. Parcells was a PR hire. He was on his way to Atlanta and Huizenga wet his pants and gave a boatload of money to a coach who was great 25 years ago to run personnel. Just a bad decision, which was Wayne's specialty.
