Hickey deserves more time based on his performance season, but I don't think the team can allow that to color their coaching search. If a high profile coach like Harbaugh or Malzahn doesn't want him, I'm OK with him being fired.

I don't think some of those options are viable. Bill Lazor has done a bad job and shouldn't be considered for the head coaching position, and I don't think coaching staff members should be retained without a new head coach making that decision. The only circumstances where I've seen something like that work is Pittsburgh, and I don't trust this team to do that.

 

I'm for #4 unless it blocks a major prospect at HC, which would kinda match #2.

 

normally I would say hire the GM first, and let him pick a coach, but knowing Ross he'll chase the big name coach like Harbaugh or Cowher and let them choose the GM...which is completely fine with me.

The thread title includes the word LEADERSHIP. That is what this team needs. It needs a passionate coach with a vision and great football acumen, and it needs that in the worst possible way.

Im inclined to agree..if Hickey is doing the coaching search..he will be inclined to favor only those that would keep him on.

I want the best coach available.

I absolutely want a new head coach that has been a HC in the NFL before. Not a college guy, or someone who's never been above an assistant. If that means that he wants to bring in his own personell dept, so be it and we move on from Hickey.

 

I'm with you U13 on your first sentence. For everyone who continues to post(in other threads) "philbin sucks" "he doesn't know what he's doing" "he's the problem" etc what did you expect? No HC experience anywhere yet some fans are surprised about our current state due to phibin's shortcomings?

I don't care where the next HC comes from but we need someone who, at the very least, has led players before. With positive results of course. IMO we don't necessarily need a "name" nor SB coach. Just an experienced HC who can get the best out of his players. If that means he comes from college so be it b/c that's where this watered-down nfl is headed anyway.

If Hickey's players show improvement during the remainder of the season I would keep & allow him to select the new head coach.

 

I like how Jim Harbaugh is a given to leave the 49ers. No one else sees the insanity in that?

It's insane, but it's only built upon what is already an insane situation. Harbaugh should absolutely have a long term contract in place that makes him one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL. The 49ers won't give him that for whatever insane reason, and that is what has created this insane situation. As a result of that inaction, and despite his best efforts to convince them otherwise, players are perceiving Harbaugh as a guy with one foot out the door, and that's only making things worse.

 

Harbaugh probably goes to Michigan.
Cowher will probably stay in the commentator role.
Gruden - will burn out trying to get this team straightened out even if he takes a shot.
Malzahn - will need a strong GM to get started.

After that, for former HC with NFL experience, they are getting fat and happy in front of the camera - Brian Billick probably the best of the bunch that includes Herm Edwards, Tony Dungy, Steve Mariucci, Dennis Green - which one might need dramamine to consider the entire bunch.

After THAT - you've got guys like Marinelli, Martz, Mornhinweg, Cameron, Henning, Capers, Gilbride, Mularkey, Nolan, and Gregg Williams to name a few. Most of which have already had a shot and blown it - and we don't have a clue whether they have learned and improved, or are just playing out the hand they've been given.

Anyone know any other HC possibilities who are up and comers - which is the usual tried and true method which isn't always successful either!

This latest blurb about Harbaugh not liking the idea of going to Michigan because the recruiting process takes too much time away from his family...that strikes me as too true to be misdirection. It really makes me think perhaps he's not as hot on the Michigan idea as I would think, for his own reasons.

 

The Dolphins have an uphill battle to recruit anyone of merit, but the idea it's not even worth discussion is problematic.

The Dolphins job is still a good job, as long as you're willing to give that person the amount of power they want. No offense to Hickey but if Ross pursues Harbaugh and Jim says I'd prefer to bring my own personnel man then you let him do that. Given that Ross has screwed this situation up the last two times, lets hope he's learned his lesson.

 

I'm as high on Gus Malzahn as anyone but I think Jim Harbaugh is the better choice for Miami.

1. There's something to be said for a guy that walks in with the full confidence of the owner before he even interviews.

2. Jim Harbaugh will have an easier time filling out his STAFF than Gus Malzahn, and he can draw from more people with NFL experience whereas you know Malzahn is going to try and bring for example Rhett Lashlee in to be his offensive coordinator. This is kind of an important point as your position coaches and coordinators can make or break your tenure. I'm not picking on Lashlee. He could be fine. But I think there's a greater chance some of the guys Malzahn tries to bring up will be in over their heads a bit.

3. If Jim Harbaugh passes up MICHIGAN in order to come coach for Miami, that will have been an important test for him to pass. If there's any job he'd go back to college for, it's Michigan. If that job is open and he shows no interest in it, then it's absolutely true he doesn't really want to go back to college. Malzahn on the other hand, it will be in the back of everyone's mind that at any point he could pull a Saban...especially if things get tough in Miami.

4. The comparative resumes matter when it comes to the media and fan narratives. If Malzahn isn't succeeding right away in Miami like Chip Kelly did in Philadelphia, then the media/fan narrative for that was practically already written before he's hired. It will be, he's a college coach. He's having trouble adapting his simple college schemes to the NFL where the defenses are all bigger, faster, better, etc. If Jim Harbaugh doesn't succeed initially, I think fans and media will be a lot quicker to believe that it's because he's in the midst of rebuilding the team in his image and that could take time.

 

Ross is a bonafide ****-up. He's repeatedly tried to keep people in weird half-measure scenarios and recruit new hires with that kind of baggage. He could try and force Aponte and/or Hickey on someone, or hell even suggest Philbin make an excellent assistant head coach for someone else.

 

Im sorry...personally, if Jim Harbaugh said Im ready to coach in Miami this Sunday...Id ring a ding that ding a ling Phiblin say...great knowin ya, have some Fish N Chips on me, and Harbaugh would be standing on the sidelines Sunday.

If there is even an inkling of a chance to grab him as the HC next season....DO IT.

 

yup, this offseason could be similar to last offseason, only difference being Philbin plays the role of Ireland, he's the odd man out and Aponte and Hickey are safe, severely handcuffing our search for the right coach, just like last offseason handcuffed our search for the right GM.

All that said if Jim Harbaugh gave indications that he's not going to go for Miami, I would take my chances with Gus Malzahn in less than a heartbeat.

 

My concern with Harbaugh is this:

Either there's a real problem with him or the FO there is full of idiots. I don't believe the FO is full of idiots and the players are starting to turn on him too.

Why is that not concerning to anyone else...what am I missing?

Hickey was never qualified to be a GM. People around the league were laughing at us when we interviewed the guy...and they were shaking their heads when we actually hired him. He was about to be fired, he only got the job with us because everyone turned us down and our foolish owner had unwarranted faith in Philbin, another guy who was never qualified for the position we gave him. Joe is the only reason Hickey got the job, so their fates should be directly tied together. No more bull**** half measures, no more shotgun weddings. Ross by now should see it hasn't worked at all.

 

I think what happened there is lack of loyalty to the accomplishments, he provided multiple conference championships and a Super Bowl appearance and they didn't reward him for that, I also think that he might have wanted to get rid of certain players and was overruled..if true both of those things spell doom to a guy like Harbaugh, he needs power, right now if those two things are true, why would he want to coach there, and better yet, how could he coach there if that's the case, and lastly, you can't coach if your heart isn't 100 % committed, those are reasons to lose some heart.

yea, Hickey has made some good moves, he's been better than Ireland, though that really isn't saying much considering Ginger Jeff is this era's Matt Millen. but there's no way he deserves to steer the ship long term with this franchise, **** that.

Ross can make amends for all the boneheaded, head-scratching decisions he's made up to this point by finally cleaning house this offseason. it's really the only thing I'm looking forward to this year, cause this team ain't doing ****.
