Arent we down both safeties, 2/3 linebackers, and playing a rookie and WR convert at CB?

Time will tell to see if he is indeed over his head, but it its sort of ridiculous to think this defense should really be any good.

 

I think he doesn't have any linebackers and is playing with a street free agent and a special teams ace at safety.

Edit: He has one linebacker.

 

Yeah. I was thinking this. Joseph is good, but this game shows he's not NFL head coach ready. Hopefully he has two weeks to figure **** out

You have a rookie at one CB position and another second year CB who played WR in college. The Dolphins best player in the secondary is on injured reserve and the Dolphins may have the worst set of LB's in the entire league.

For the most part, the DL applied no pressure on the Bills QB today. The fact this team is 10-5 with this defense is a miracle.

I certainly don't blame Joseph for the poor play of the defense. The fact is that there just isn't a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, once you get past Suh and Wake.

With Jones back at safety next year and hopefully some upgrades at the LB positions, perhaps Joseph will be able to show if he can be a quality DC or not. Right now the problems on defense has
more to do with the overall lack of talent than it does with the defensive calls Joseph is making.

This is a bottom ten defense in the NFL but the coaches and players have done what is necessary to be in a situation where they can make the playoffs this year.

As someone who predicted before the season that this would be a 5-6 win team. I am happy as heck that I was wrong. While this team certainly doesn't make it easy on the fans, this has been the most enjoyable season for me since 2008.

No matter what happens over the coming weeks, I feel great about the future of this team under this coaching staff and that includes Joseph.

They are missing maxwell
The bill offense is legit and they were at home. Tyrod is not a bad qb.

 

Vance Joseph has basically made chicken salad out of chicken sh** this year.

At least 60% of our defense is hot garbage, and despite that fact this team tackles and moves to the ball better than any unit we've had in the last decade. There aren't many bonehead plays or stupid penalties. Guys rarely blow assignments. They play disciplined, smart football and tackle well.

I'll take that.

Seriously where was the pass rush? I saw our ends sealed off like bathtub lining the whole game and Suh was the invisible man.

 

No expert here, but to me it looked like we had some busted coverages especially on the side with Howard and Rambo. I have faith in Joseph and think he will get things cleaned up for our game next week against the Patsies.

 

I think he has done a good job when you consider the defensive talent. Look for us to spend $$$ on defense during free agency and in the draft. We really need a LB or two that are coverage linebackers. TEs are eating our lunch. I think our CBs are better than I expected. I think that next year will be a big improvement if we make some offseason moves.

 

I dislike the way out guys break down before the tackle, just go freakin tackle the guy! There was a 3rd and 2 where Hewitt just waited for the RB to catch the ball before going to make the tackle. IF he reacts faster he tackles him for a loss. I see this a lot where our guys break down and just wait for the offensive player to make a move. Just to tackle!

 

I think you need to look deeper

 

I'd like to see how he does with 1, maybe 2 more offseasons of player acquisition/development. I think he has what it takes, just needs the tools.

 

Our safeties after IAQ was down were hot garbage. Literally there was plays where the 3 guys at the end of the play were Paysinger/Rambo and Thomas. That's a steaming load of crap there. I counted at least a minimum of 3 times the safeties were extremely late picking up their man off Howard today. Howard got left out to dry by the safeties. Also our LB's are a steaming pile. Kiko's alright but our outside backers are piss poor.

 

It is what it is. This team has found ways to win so what does that say? A few decent acquisitions in the offseason and a few hits in the draft will do wonders. I don't think this season has been a fluke. We're a team on the upswing. Expectations will only increase, but so should our level of play. That's my thought on it.

 

Too many are selling the performance of Tyrod Taylor in the 2nd half way too short. And great catches by Watkins and Clay.

His ball placement was incredible, and he killed us with his legs. Granted the pass rush was non existent but sometimes the other teams QB just balls out.

I agree, people blame the injuries, but even when the starters were playing we were getting torched over the middle and can never stop the run. Vance's statements that stopping the run is not that important have also been discouraging, his gameplan for the ravens game was horrible and he made no adjustments. We've been getting by on pure grit and playmaking ability of some key players but overall the defense has sucked all season.

Completely agree. If we had a better DC I would feel much better about our chances in the playoffs. Not that injuries haven't taken a toll, but Joseph is definitely the weak link in this coaching staff right now imho.

 

Yet here he is being mentioned constantly as a possible HC candidate. This team was never really talented on defense even as the season began. No outside backers worth a crap (Koa never was worth a crap, neither was Jenkins), Our corner depth was relying on young players making significant steps beyond Maxwell and we were going with unproven DT's next to Suh and journeyman DE's. We have had SEVERAL more talented defenses going back to 2000. Be hard pressed to find less defensive talent on a Miami team.

 

The fact he is being touted as a HC candidate does not mean he has done a great job this season. Plenty of bad ****ty coaches have been given head coaching jobs in this league. I haven't seen anything vance has done that tells me he'd be a great head coach other Than the fact he seems to be liked by the players.

Yah cause everyone lines up to give HC speculation jobs to those that did crap jobs, especially in Miami. Oh wait they don't. Seriously you didn't even rebut my post with anything beyond "well I haven't seen it". Your whole argument is he doesn't stop the run. Well gee we got Cam Wake at one end who plainly sucks at run stopping, Mario "stealing money" Williams didn't help, Phillips and Earl opposite Suh who don't take advantage of all the 1 on 1's they see. Phillips is ok pass rushing but he is still poor at stopping the run with any consistency. Branch and Jones have been serviceable at best (sorry sacks don't make up for the fact Branch and Jones get caught looking inside most of the time on outside runs). The vast majority of the running against us comes straight through or to the outside of Phillips/Mitchell/Jones/Branch/Butler. Oh and we have no LB's for run stopping. Our MLB is a lightweight, Butler wasn't even in the league when we brought him in and started him and Jenkins should have been replaced long ago. And we've been using Paysinger a LOT for a career ST's guy. What they have done to cover for the lack of talent level is to be aggressive, play it very close to the line in penalties and thankfully be opportunistic when the time calls for it (Top 5 in INT's and FF's which has helped us be middle of the pack in scoring defense). However, that aggressiveness gets exposed every time they face a scrambling/athletic Qb.

I'm honestly looking forward to next year when we hopefully invest in some young DE and LB's and see what Vance can do with them. I also hope Phillips finally hits that next level and becomes the guy we think he can be. Also, look forward to replacing Mitchell with someone who hopefully stops the run far better. Also hopefully we aren't in a position to have to rely on the Paysingers/Rambo/Thomas' of the world who have cost us so much this season.

 

It might have something to do with no talent especially on the back 7. All he has is Suh and Wake (who is mostly a pass rusher)

Most of these LBers and Secondary probably wouldnt start on any other winning NFL team.

It's hard to sack a true running QB. When you do get to him you've possibly overrun that side and created a running lane for him. It looked to me that they tried to apply pressure, but stayed back at times to seal off the running lane. And when Tyrod gets hot he's actually a pretty good passer. He can be accurate and has a strong arm.

 

Only thing vance joseph has shown is that he is a pretty good db coach. That's the only part of the defense that has overperformed this year. All you did in your post was come up with excuse after excuse as to why this defense ranks among the worsy in the NFL. When has vance ever coached a top rated defence in his career?

We really don't know what a Vance joseph defense would look like. He needs more talent at linebacker before he can run his defense. Right now we're running a bend but don't break defense which pretty much every defensive coordinator will run when he is undermanned talentwise. Next year I expect to get a total overhaul of the linebacking crew and then we'll see what type of defense and how aggressive he really is

 

I don't know what in the hell someone is looking at to think that Vance Joseph has done a bad job.

You've got a defense that is full backups/developmental players, or guys who need very specific scheme fits. You've basically got Wake and Suh at this point who work out of the box. Everyone else you're doing work, pushing and prodding. I don't think people appreciate how genuinely bad Alonso, Maxwell, Branch, Mitchell, Butler, etc have been in the recent past when not used right. Massaging that all together like he has done requires a lot of work and skill. You can point to a bunch different guys where work has been done to get their best on top of that.

When Joseph got hired, I sure as hell didn't expect for him to run a zone blitz heavy wide-9/cover-3 defense, and I'm not sure he did either. But he's fitting it together, and he deserves any head coaching interviews he will get this offseason.

 

The dude is working with duct tape and bubble gum...the talent level for this week's game is far less than optimal, I don't envy his position at all.

The team/organization have a lot of trust in him too, basically taking his advice on players and running with it...they basically give him what he wants. I'd love to see what this defense looks like in a few years of off-season massaging. He pretty much has full control of the defense, and this team is ascending, I believe he'll be around another year or two, and hope Gase can talk him into staying longer. Could be a GREAT situation for these coaches in a couple years.

 

By the time this fanbase appreciates him, he will be a HC somewhere else.

And I wouldn't be shocked if that is as early as this offseason.

 

Naw bro, Earl Mitchell, Jordan Phillips, Andre branch, Jason Jones, kiko, maxwell, Howard, isa, he'll I'll even throw in Hewitt are not duct tape and bubble gum. They are simply under rated football players who are a huge part of this teams success. Obviously Joseph has a very bright future and will get looks this off season, but the Baltimore game in particular showed me he is still far from being a very good DC at this point in time.

Coordinators can leave to be promoted as a HC under contract or not.

Nobody thought Mike Tomlin was ready to be a HC, yet he got the interview, impressed and the rest is history. (Unless you are Terry Bradshaw) So I would be surprised not chocked if he is hired in 17.

 

Interesting. I don't know anything about it but I'd think a new HC would be looking for a commitment of a few years from any of his new hires. He is a impressive communicator.

 

What exactly did the Baltimore game show you?

 

That Joseph doesn't know how to defend speedy wr's and has trouble adjusting in game, especially in regards to te's. Kind of like when we had a hobbled Russell Wilson on a 4th and 4 and he decided to send 4 tired rushers instead of blitz, which probably cost us the game. Or when on a 4th and goal on the 7 Joseph decides to get cute with the game on the line and have paysinger drop into coverage from the los instead of just simply rushing 3 or 4 and dropping 8 like an experienced DC would do in that situation, imo of course.
