Flores going to the Texans would be hilarious. Watson wanted to come here because of Flores, now Flores goes to Watson lol.

His offenses blew, he has no ability to develop players on that side of the ball, he comes up short under pressure and can't hire staff.

I'd have been fine giving him another year, but it's not like we just got rid of a super bowl winner like the Eagles did a few years back.

What if he WAS the problem? I'm not a Grier fan at all, and I hate seeing power struggles (which should result in both parties gone), but what if Grier isn't the issue we think he is and it's more on Flores' poor staffing and player development?

Here's the thing- player development falls on Flores. It's also clear that our line has not developed; pass blocking is worse today than it was a few months ago. Run blocking has improved but that's mainly through scheme. I've said for over a month now that someone deserves to be fired for that offensive line.

With that said, every linemen we drafted outside of Eichenberg was a project. What I mean by that is we knew, without a doubt, that they were not day 1 starters. But the problem was that we cut veterans and the backups were worse than the rookies. So who's fault is that? It's not on coaching initially...those players just weren't ready.

But at some point, bad picks or not, it has to come back to coaching. Miami schemed the heck out of the offense to turn a turd into a diamond, so it's hard to fault offensive coordinators. The ONLY THING I want to know is who decided not to bring in a veteran line coach- was it Grier or Flores? Because that's ultimately who's to blame here.

Moving forward though, it's definitely not Flores fault if the line stinks next year. So who's fault will it be then? The new coach who's not even in the building yet, or the guy who drafted all long-term prospects and expected them to start day 1?

I've accepted that we've fired Flores- still furious over it, but I've accepted it. Now we need to figure out what's next and how to fix the line. Unless we dip heavily into free agency, Grier will be fired next year for the same reason we just fired Flores. Then what? We bring in a new GM and start the rebuild as all these rookies are ready for their 2nd contracts...we won't be able to afford most of them on the defensive side.

The main problem here is that this roster, this franchise, is in win-now mode. We have maybe 2 or 3 years left with this defense and the odds of building another of this caliber are slim to none. So if we're average next year under a new head coach, Grier is fired and we're starting over with a new GM, we've completely wasted everything from Minkah and Tunsil until today. The ticking clock on the wall is the real problem and it's the one thing nobody is looking at.

Ultimately, a head coach's job is to win football games. Flores is at fault for that offensive line, but at the end of the day he did his job. And no amount of double-speak by the franchise will make me forget the promise of "perennial playoff contender" coupled with us being a year or two out from yet another complete rebuild.

So as of today, 100% of EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS is 100% Grier's fault. This is the road he's chosen and his only scapegoat has left the building.

 

Not gonna say Grier shouldn't have been fired, but I'm also thinking some people are making Flores out to be something he hasn't actually been here.

 

I don’t think anyone is calling Flores the next Bellicheck, even though it took him 4 seasons to post a winning a record.

He was a rookie head coach still learning on the job. I expect mistakes from a rookie Hc. Watching a GM continue to make them 10+ years is inexcusable. This was our first back to back winning season since the early 2000’s which was enough for me to be patient and see if he could turn the corner with one more year. Grier certainly didn’t help him with Tua or the OL.

 

He may have been a part of the organization for 20 years, but he's only been a GM for going on 6 six years.

I don't want to defend Grier because he's definitely not above scrutiny, but let's not scrutinize him without context.

 

Why are people making Flores out to be the next Don Shula, now that he's fired? He put a mediocre product out on the field every week. He was never gonna win us anything here

 

I think they both should have been fired; but the thing with Flores is you hired a first time head coach. You're going to get the growing pains during games like we saw. You also handed this guy the keys to a team that literally had nobody on that roster worth a damn. He managed to win 5 games. Then through the constant mess on his staff much of which was probably of his own doing; then apparently being saddled with a QB he didn't want he still managed to put up two seasons with a winning record barely missing the playoffs. I mean think about it; if we don't miss FG's of our own or give up late FG's to Jacksonville, Atlanta and Vegas (cant recall which scenario was which opponent) were in an even better spot with an offense that couldnt get out of its own way. I mean; win one of those games and maybe you're in, win two and you're for sure in. Thats progress. Again; this was a first time head coach. You can't saddle a first time head coach with a rebuild the scale we did and expect a division title in 3 years especially when you don't draft the QB until year 2. It's a ridiculous standard Ross is creating and its sending a message again to the league that you're likely not in the long term plans. Again, think of the optics if you're a head coach candidate; do you really want to come here? Maybe if the GM is gone too it's a more attractive opportunity; but that's not the case.

It's not necessarily about Flores at this point; its the situation as a whole. Flores will be a HC again though and we'll likely regret this one. What he did in year 1 and 2 was pretty damn impressive with nothing much to work with and in all honesty we didn't have much to work with this year either with no WR's and no OL yet even after dropping 7 straight, we win 7 straight and basically fall one game short of the playoffs with 3 losses that could have gone either way. That earns you another year; at least it should but Grier won the whine fest and saved himself even though he's very much a part of the problem.

 

I agree with you, they both should have been fired. That's not to say that it might not still happen. If harbaugh comes here, he's got enough juice to get grier fired or at the minimum, neuter him. If some assistant is hired again, grier will have no one to keep him in check. This could actually get worse than it is/was already

I believe Ross that he won't steal JH from Michigan. If Harbaugh wants to leave though then I sure hope Ross isn't stupid enough to say no due to his ties to Michigan. I doubt Harbaugh comes here regardless though; I think he'd much rather prefer Vegas or Chicago. Both are destinations to boost his ego even more.

Thats my concern though; we're likely only going to be able to attract another first time HC, or a retread past his prime with the dysfunction we have here, which will lead to another questionable staff meaning things will take time and we all know Ross isn't patient enough or smart enough. He's just shown us that here again; while again delivering the message that "his guy" Grier is calling the shots. You're basically a second class citizen coming here to coach with Grier as your GM due to his relationship with the owner. Everyone just watch him basically behind the scenes lobby for the HC he helped hire to be fired while somehow retaining his own job. Its dysfunction at it's finest courtesy of none other than Stephen Ross yet again.

 

I would hope that Ross wouldn't fire Flores without already knowing who the next coach is. He's obviously not a stupid man but if he doesnt already have a plan in place, we're screwed

I don’t get what people see in flores. I’ve wanted him gone all season. We we’re literally rank 32nd on defense this year at the half way point of the season. Then we got lucky and hit a stretch of back up qbs and got a ton of inflated stats vs qbs that had zero chance vs the blitz. The dolphins haven’t been ranked in the top 10 of anything under flores. We didn’t make the playoffs i mean even gase made the playoffs. He actively worked against developing our number 5 draft pick. He handled tua so poorly it’s laughable. He sends grant away this season and we literally had no other kr on the roster. He sent karras and flowers away and this line was all time bad. Wr used a 1st round pick on noah who couldn’t even get snaps in small doses leading to Zero development there. Dont even get me started on who he started where on the oline this season and our overall value of the rb position during his tenure.

 

That's not true. We ended up ranked 6th in defense and 3rd in takeaway/giveaway ratio in 2020 under Flores.

Regarding top 10 rankings, the most important (other than W/L) is point differential and the last time we ranked top 10 was in 2002 under Wannstedt! Amazing how far a once proud franchise has fallen.

Maybe they should rename this team the Stingrays.. you know.. a bottom feeder. Even sounds cool (still like Dolphins more though).

The only two worst organizations to be a head coach for other than the Dolphins are the Lions and the Jets. He’ll, even Belichick resigned as head coach one day after taking the job.
