Depends on what you mean when you say fall. If he fell to us in the 2nd round I'd have to seriously consider it. If we are picking in the top 10 I don't know about that. I think Manziel can play in the NFL. He's gotten better this year, he should win the Heisman again but he probably won't because his defense is terrible.

2nd round, sure. He could be more of a value than Russell Wilson, considering the difference in the top of those two draft classes. Manziel would bring some, for lack of a better word, " swagger " to Miami.... Like Marino once did.

Its about time teams finally start catching on. If you don't have a bonafide franchise Qb, you keep drafting Qbs until you find one. Passing on a potential qb for what you think is a certainty elsewhere, is a one step forward, two steps back approach.

 

I don't know. I'd have to see how he does in the combines to be sure, but if he doesn't crap the bed in the combines, I'd consider it. Tannehill hasn't done enough to convince me he's the answer.

 

I am not sure you would. We have a number of other needs that should be addressed first. Any QB behind that line is getting a kicking. We need some serious RB production. Our LBs haven't exactly excelled. Our DL needs a look too. Realistically we need 4 new OL guys more than we need a QB. I know Tannehill has his critics but I think he's generally looked good when given the chance. A better OC would see his skills better utilised.

Nope, he has two top tackles helping to keep him upright and regularly allows him 3.5 probably even 4+ seconds per passing play. He ain't going to get that in the NFL.

Most of his success can be attributed to having plays breakdown and then making something out of nothing. That being said, I doubt that skill translates to the NFL as his athletic ability won't allow him to escape most QB spies and other pass rushers. His arm isn't that great either, most of the time it just looks like he lofts it put there for grabs. At times I watch him I swear he sold his soul in order to get as lucky as he does...

As someone else mentioned his off field antics are probably the last thing this team needs right now.

No. Those ready to give up on Tannehill are just wrong IMO. Tannehill has been this offense this year. Yes he has made mistakes but he is young and relatively inexperienced yet he has put the offense on his shoulders, been a leader and has shown continuous improvement. This team is in shambles, distractions galore, yet Tannehill has not faltered.

Get a new GM, fix oline FINALLY, get a rb and allow Miller to be the complimentary back, check out kellers knee in offseason if ok then resign, we get Gibson back, get a new DC at a minimum, hopefully either Sherman adapts or is gone. Then Tannehill has next year to show the growth necessary to go all in

 

I would hesitate to draft Manziel not for his actual on the field skills, but rather for the the media circus he is going to bring along where ever he goes. I could see it being Tebow like.

 

Miami should draft a QB if there is a good one available, but I don't think Manziel is that guy.

 

Big fan of Blake Bortles of UCF. I'm sure Jay Gruden would like him.

As I've said for a while there is basically Teddy Bridgewater and then everyone else.

The everyone else list is extensive, a morass of Tajh Boyd, Derek Carr, Blake Bortles, Zach Mettenberger, Aaron Murray, Jimmy Garoppolo, A.J. McCarron, Stephen Morris, David Fales, Keith Wenning and Jeff Matthews.

With that group, everyone's going to see something different. There won't be a lot of winners as far as figuring out which of that group can play and in what system...because the opinions are going to vary so widely, and so will the results.

Personally I like Bortles the best of that group. But he could stay in school. If he does then I also like Boyd and Garoppolo. Still trying to figure out a few of those guys, including McCarron and Matthews.

Johnny Manziel needs to stay at least one more year. As does Marcus Mariota. Brett Hundley as well. It would be a mistake for any of those guys to come out as redshirt sophomores. I feel like the NFL will eat them alive because they're not ready.

Another underclassman to watch out for if he comes out early is Rakeem Cato of Marshall. Very good player. I don't love his frame, especially on a guy willing to run around and make things happen, but he's extraordinarily smart about taking contact. Reminds me of Russell Wilson that way. Can make every single throw and then some. There's some talent in that receivers unit with Gator Hoskins and Tommy Shuler. But Cato is really good himself.

 

No thanks. While I don't have blind faith in Tannehill. I still believe he's worth building around and take the chance that he develops into our franchise QB.

 

I'm the biggest combine fan there is, but if your basing those events on Manziel's evaluation, imo that wouldn't be a good idea..

This dude needs the pressure of a rush to engage the unique instincts and athleticism.

 

I wouldn't take Manziel in the first and probably wouldn't take him in the 2nd. By the third round, however, I would strongly consider. He doesn't look like an NFL QB, but I think he just has a certain knack. If you take him, you have to let him be who he is an not try to change him too much. If you instruct him to just stay in the pocket to wring out his instincts to scramble, you've destroyed what makes him who he is.

QBs need to develop. They do it at different rates under different circumstances. It is not a "you either have it or you don't" think where there are just a handful of people born to be great NFL QBs. I think you give Tannehill more time, but if there is a special QB prospect at a value draft spot you consider it.

 

He has instinct and is a winner. Look at Russel Wilson. I take him.

 

Totally on the bandwagon with Bortles. As a UCF fan though, I seriously hope he stays another year for us though. He's improved consistently every year and if he comes back another year our offense could be scary good. It could be a turning point in UCF's history.

Yes, Manziel did improve between last year and this year but I am not sure how much more he could do on the field to sway GM's opinions on him, especially considering he is likely going to lose both tackles and Mike Evans to the NFL. His completion percentage is at 73%, his YPA is 10.52, and he has already thrown for 31 touchdowns. If he stays at TAMU he might become more refined in the pocket, make better decisions, etc but I have a hard time seeing him improve upon or even replicate those numbers. In short, it would benefit him to stay at TAMU from a skill point perspective, but it would probably hurt him in terms of where he would be drafted in the NFL. Just my two cents.

I'm in no way ready to give up on Tannehill just yet. Give him an O-line and a competent OC and he'll produce, I guess. That said, I think competition wouldn't hurt. Imagine Johnny behind the current line: escape and run. One of the things he does best. So, yes, I'd draft him every single time, because I'm a huge fan.

 

It amazes me how people see a bad pass and use it to say RT sucks. Amazing exxaggeration to prove ones point. Amazing.

 

Part of me is a little torn on Johnny Manziel just because he's a great natural talent in the same way that RG3 and Russell Wilson were, as far as being able to run around, find open options and hit them.

All three guys there were CLEAR signs that they had trouble at times seeing the field from inside the pocket. That goes for Russell Wilson too. He wasn't perfectly clean that way. It was probably the one thing that made me grade him a 2nd rounder instead of a 1st rounder...same as I did RG3.

I think with Manziel, it's a different degree. With Russell Wilson you saw him sit in the pocket and make reads and timing throws. With RG3 there were definitely times he did that as well, especially with the deep ball which he hit with alarming accuracy.

With Manziel, I'm just seeing him miss wide open passes because he's sitting in the pocket and it's almost like he's not even going to bother reading anything until a certain amount of time has passed and he can start running around, opening up clear vision for himself outside of the pocket, and then finding the open guy. But is that because he's only in his second year starting? If he stuck around aTm would he get better with that?

Personally I think I need to actually see that happen before I buy on him.

But the thing that bothers me probably the most is if you're stacking him with the other two guys Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin, he has the worst character traits. Russell Wilson had about as good a character as you can get. I had nits about Robert Griffin's personality. I think he has a problem with authority. And I think we've definitely seen that hurt him these last two seasons. But he's still relatively squeaky as far as not seeing him ever get into trouble off the field. And he's a very hard worker, an infectious leader.

Johnny Manziel? I don't know what he is character-wise...but I'm not seeing the good parts of Russell Wilson or Robert Griffin. I'm seeing some of the bad parts of Robert Griffin's personality, without the good parts.

 

The part I bolded is so frustrating, especially when watching Mike Evans. There's a particular play, I can't remember the game, where A&M is inside the RZ and Mike Evans is lined up wide outside right. Evans is open 2-3 times on an in-route, then a corner route and eventually he comes back and catches a TD. Sure it all worked out in the end, but Manziel was just wildly running around when he could have just hit Evans in about 2 seconds.

I believe he's already graduated. That's the one thing that could see him leave, if it's true.

This season is already a magical season for UCF. I don't see it getting any better for them next year, unless they finish this season poorly. The chances of that are low since they play Temple, Rutgers, South Florida and SMU. They should be able to whoop each one of those teams. Their only loss was a 3 point loss to a GOOD South Carolina team. By all means South Carolina should have been able to whoop UCF on a talent-for-talent basis. They couldn't.

You say next year could be a turning point in UCF school history if he stays but I'm not sure I see that. I think this year is already that turning point. Beating Louisville, who boasts the best QB in the country...that's a big deal. Coming 3 points short against a good, ranked South Carolina team is a big deal. Having the inside track to winning the American Athletic Conference title in the first year of the conference's existence is a big deal. And doesn't that give them a BCS bowl bid? Win or lose, that would be a very big deal.

I don't know that I see it getting any better. They're not going to get any more love from the pollsters next year. They're still not going to respect the AAC. You'd have to basically go undefeated to make any REAL noise. And even then, you're probably not making the championship game. They'll put a 1-loss SEC team in the championship game before they put a 0-loss AAC team in there. You know that's true. Probably true for the Pac-12 as well.

I think the fun could be over for UCF after this year. You could see a slew of juniors leave...starting with Storm Johnson and Blake Bortles.

 

Mike Evans is so effing good.

 

ESPN the magazine had a piece on him about a month or so ago that basically painted him as an immature brat that conducts himself in a very privileged manner. Not vouching for the article's accuracy, but if there is a good amount of truth to it he might be veering close to Ryan Leaf territory.

 

Yeah that's kind of the fear. He's got the rep of a partier, guy who doesn't take things seriously, etc. I mean, being asked to leave Manning Academy because he was hung over from partying the night before, doesn't that say it all? That's a general world view of his that needs to change in a HURRY if he wants to be a pro.
