For the life of me I have no idea why he makes #1 and #3 part of his purview as those are jobs for the coaching staff.

You can sense that after striking out on Chad Henne, Jeff is a little wary of the QB position. You could sense it in his explanations about drafting Ryan Tannehill, the simple fact that he actually sent Ryan's tape out to other friends in the league and asked them a favor to watch and tell him what they think. Now I think he's pretty nervous that Ryan's not lighting it up on the field right away. This is because he had supreme confidence in Chad Henne, even went so far as to (in George W. style) hang a victory banner on that pick after he'd only been in the league a year...and then Henne failed him.

 

If he's nervous that Tannehill isn't looking like rookie Dan Marino, then he has absolutely no damn clue what he was drafting. What did he expect from a guy with 19 college starts?

You can sense you're looking to throw stones at Ireland. You spin him seeking opinions of others as an act of desperation where it can just as easily be looked at as a person without an ego who's looking for fresh sets of eyes. But a rookie QB didn't light it up in mini camp and oooo boy Jeff must be pissing his pants already.

Can't read too much into number one because don't know the details. I also don't take issue with number three. Four is expected, but IMO you can tell he's nervous because knows, he's 'all-in' after the Tannehill pick. Its either go big or go home with Tannehill and it's out of his hands at this point.

No, that's why I said "is expected," but nervous as in "it is something being talked about" unless I misread.

He's nervous just because he knows his job is on the line, IMO. I think that's normal. I don't blame him for that.

What I sense is that I can't say anything negative or even neutral about Jeff Ireland without you trying to spin it in some way into me being biased. That's your bias. It clouds your ability to look at anything objectively. Your loss.

 

No, wasn't referring to him acknowledged it to the media. Rather, it being talked about. I figured that the poster meant it being discussed behind closed doors, but I may be wrongly assuming and/or misinterpreting. If so, my apologies.

Sure there could be details we're missing that make it better than it sounds, but if you were a coach would you like the General Manager saying to the press that one of his jobs is to re-do things that you do in order to make sure you don't screw up? Sure I expect some oversight but I don't expect it shared with the press.

I would take issue with it if, as part of my coaching, me and my staff took it as our responsibility to manage guys' nutrition and weight. That's just smart business. That's not even a football thing. You don't want two different branches of a management structure trying to manage the same employee on the same issue. That's how you end up with mixed messages, and that's how you end up with employees trying to play one off the other. I will stipulate that if this is Jeff Ireland's job, and not the coaching/training staff's job in any way, then it's fine for Jeff to regularly speak to the players about their nutrition and weight. It's not how I would prefer to structure things, certainly not how I imagine New England structuring things, but it's not as bad. However if you've got two bosses separately trying to manage you on the same issue, yeah that's a problem and that's Management 101 stuff, not football stuff.

That's not how I viewed it because it could be that he's reinforcing it ('reminding'). It's not the first time I've heard of it and it wasn't an issue.

In this situation you're just spinning what you want from Ireland's interview. There's nothing substantial in that.

That's possible. I doubt it, because in interviews both Philbin and Sherman seem to have as good a grasp on rep counts as Sparano used to, but it's possible the duty has been given to Ireland. If so, I don't think that's a good way to structure things.

That's really not a good idea. Presumably you have a training staff that is doing those things. It's one thing if that training staff reports to Jeff Ireland and that's what he's referring to, the management of the staff that manages the players' nutrition and weight. That would be a lot better, but again not how I'd want to structure things (remember 'structure' is constantly cited as a reason various personages choose against Miami). If the structure is organized such to where you have trainers and staff directly overseeing player nutrition and weight, reporting to the head coach (and/or assistant head coach), and then separately Jeff Ireland is also sticking his fingers in that area...that's a bad idea.

I figured as much. I wouldn't expect someone who makes illogical assumptions to accept a logical theory.

 

It depends on the structure. If Jeff Ireland is Joe Philbin's boss, then I would go even further than you...not only do I not mind the extra set of eyes, I flat out expect it. What I would not expect in that situation is for Jeff Ireland to go on about it in public. On the other hand, if the structure is set up to where Ireland and Philbin are equals, then I don't think it's in the team's best interest to have Ireland re-doing what Philbin, Sherman, Coyle, etc are already doing. The negatives outweigh the positives. Even if Jeff Ireland catches them on some discrepancy or disagreement, bringing it up will not benefit anyone. We're talking about things that aren't necessarily that big a deal, don't have too many reaching negative consequences. The disagreement and pestering nature of the re-checking itself, and the influence it has on the relationships, is a negative consequence that in my opinion is bigger than any potential benefit. Again, I'm just thinking about this objectively in terms of how I would set up my own business/corporate structure. You need clear lines of responsibility, and you need to avoid potential for antagonistic relationships where possible.

Understandable. It strikes me as a preference, whether you have your player development/training staff report to the GM or the Head Coach.

 

One trip to FanHell to read posts you've contributed to the various "Waaaah, ckparrothead is being mean to us" threads that have started over the years would do that well enough.

 

#3 should be expected since all this weight stuff is put into contracts. Some players also need to hear it at many different levels and some still never get it (John Jerry).

#1 should also be expected of a GM. It's his job to evaluate the players. Would be daft if he cut someone because he wasn't developing and just took the coaching staffs word that he was getting enough reps. Only to find out later the coaching staff hadn't been.

 

You make it sound like valuing someone's opinion and liking their personality traits are mutually exclusive.

I don't disagree with the clear lines of responsibility, but I go back to him potentially being assigned to it.

I agree it's not important. You said that if it's assigned to him it's ok, but it's also ok if it's not his area of responsibility on the basis of 'extra set of eyes'. It was that I was addressing.
