I am thinking it is too early to determine.....from what I have seen he drops way too many passes. It seems like it is a 50/50 shot that he will make the catch when he get a pass. I have not seen him make any spectacular catches. All his receptions seems mundane and easy catches to make. Same with his drops, he is not dropping tough catches, they are mostly easy catches to make. the only reason I think he should get one more year is our instability at QB. If he does not step up next year he should be gone...

 

Stability in the offense will change that. Look at what happened when Donald "Can't Catch A Pass" Lee went to Green Bay?

I don't think he'll be here next season. He's a big time bust IMHO.

 

Hagan is a drive killer. I don't know if it's lack of concentration, confidence or what but he just cannot catch the ball with consistency. He has flashes of brilliance, but you simply cannot go to the guy on third and five with confidence. You should be able to go to any receiver in the NFL on third and five and have confidence they will catch the ball.

Derek Hagan is too inconsistent at doing a Wr's most important job, catching the darn ball each time everytime, his prowess on 3rd down is impressive, but it also shows that Mr. Hagan lacks focus on the field.

I would keep him though, he does have talent, he can make plays, but to rely on him as a #2 Wr seems a risky proposition.

Think of Derek Hagan as the Channing Crowder of the offense.

 

Hagan had a horrible Senior Bowl and it was mainly due because he couldn't catch a ball. When we picked him up I was hoping he could be coached, he obviously has talent with all NCAA records he holds, but why he has not transfered that to the pros I have no idea.

You also have to point out that Miami has not had one consistent QB in a number of years. A WR needs to develope chemistry with its QB and with the musical chairs we have been playing with our QB position the last couple of years I think it is impossible for any WR to build anything with whatever QB we throw in there.

 

Too early to tell. Next season will certainly be the deal breaker for Hagan. If he continues to be inconsistent, disappearing in games and dropping passes, he's toast.

since he plays special teams we can keep him as a 4th receiver

It's the same thing as it is with Ginn and as it was with Chambers..When you have 5 different qbs throwing you the ball in 2 years, a reciever isn't going to be on the same page as the qb. Sure he's may of dropped some catchable balls but when you play in a different system with different qb's,your not going to be as comfortable as a receiver should be.

Put me in "it's too early to tell, but the early signs aren't great" camp.

 

I don't think he's natural with his hands while making the catch. When we drafted him I looked at my Senior Bowl tape and he had odd tendencies, like having his hands far apart as the ball was approaching then frantically trying to clamp them together. Some of the draft gurus noticed that and posted in the thread.

Might be correctable and you don't want to give up on a sleek athlete too soon. I'm increasingly disgusted we jettisoned Donald Lee.

You need competitive WRs. I'm more and more convinced of that. I attended the first game we had Booker, the '04 opener vs. Tennessee. It was ridiculous how he allowed Rolle to walk over him, never pretending to contest passes where he wasn't running free and the ball perfectly delivered. Rolle had an end zone INT that Booker didn't even try to break up. Hagan looks similarly soft, like he wants everything his own way.

 

so your saying that a qb has no affect on how a receiver plays.....

Simple things such as the position of your hands on a catch and catching the ball with your hands and not your body can be fixed by simple coaching. The thing I have noticed that he does well is that he gets separation which is very important and alot harder to teach a receiver then how to catch it cleanly.

 

He's our tallest WR in a time where size these days counts (see Plaxico, Moss, TO, CJ, Braylon, etc) and where speed seems to be negated (Santana Moss, Steve Smith). Unfortunately he can't concentrate catching and that's why he's not really reliable. Certainly has some promise but we need to get some superglue for his hands.

 

Funny thing about Hagan, he will jump high up into the air to catch a ball, then act surprised once he is up there that the ball is incoming...

It's like his brain hasn't caught up with his ability.

dude you can either catch or you can't shouldn't matter who is throwing it hagan can't catch it's as simple as that you can teach technique but that's it and it's really simple something he learned in high school i can catch with the best of them and nobody taught me any techniques problem is i'm too slow and too short

 

They counter their lack of height with good route-running and instincts, not just speed which deteriorates with age. Notice I mention speed not height. Ability to find holes in the D is another matter and that itself can be hard to come by. No matter what they find themselves open and can find holes in the D easily. That's not something you can train. It's something you have to have from the get go. Right now, our WR's haven't shown it and the WR's in this year's draft don't have that particular "it" factor. But even then, they aren't exactly the perfect back of the endzone targets unless the D hiccups and leaves them uncovered. When you have a tall WR who has decent hands, feet, your options improve. You gain the option of if you really need to complete a pass, you can trust your WR to at least have a fighting chance at leaping high to grab it.

 

I think his route running and size and speed gives him another chance at improving his hands. After next year if he can't catch the ball he needs to be given up on

 

yes i think he has proven he can make some great catchs like aginast dallas but he also drops some passes but yea i think he could be starting material

 

Think he can be a competent #2 receiver. Wold love to see the Fins get a physical playmaker for a #1 any thoughts on FA's available or draft picks, and have Ginn be the slot receiver running those quick slants and crossing patterns he should be able to break for big gains.:huh:
