Giants released C J.D. Walton.
Scheduled for a $2.565 million cap hit in 2015, Walton's release was inevitable. Now that he's gone, the Giants are expected to hand over the reins to 2014 second-rounder Weston Richburg at center. In Pro Football Focus' center ratings, Walton finished 38th out of 41 players last season. He'll have trouble finding guaranteed money in free agency. Mar 2 - 4:19 PM

ESPN New York believes the Giants could move on from C J.D. Walton.
PFF graded Walton as one of the worst starting centers in the league this past year. He's owed $2.5 million in salary and bonuses. Releasing Walton would allow 2014 second-rounder Weston Richburg to start at center. Jan 24 - 2:29 PM

That PFF report is ugly.

<Sigh>
Just because the guy's durable do we honestly need someone who can't play? I know I wanted depth on the OL but if they can't play it isn't depth!
I'm going to start collecting some fail train and face palm gifs because I've a feeling they're going to come in handy. -
jboogie The sky is NOT falling!
What happened to Satele?? I thought we'd bring him back

Good teams have hall of famers at every position with pro-bowl back ups.
Pennington's Limp Arm, emocomputerjock, Fin D and 11 others like this. -
 you guys are hilarious. Hilarious.

I was so wanting a guard
-
He has a lot of starting experience and is likely cheap. I'm fine with him as a backup. As was said, you can't have high quality players at every position. We would likely be able to get by with him for a few games if Pouncey had a minor injury.
We still need at least two more guards, if not three, since we have nothing we can trust there now. -
This makes no sense at all.
Sam Brenner is better than this dude.
Seriously....Walton must be a relative of Ross or Tannenbaum. -

Wow, they just wasted money on a player who is considered one of the worse centers in the entire league.
I guess Satele is looking for more money to be a backup than the Dolphins are willing to pay at this time.
I see nothing good in this signing and I'll be totally surprised if Walton is still on the roster when the preseason ends. -
While I don't expect him to make the 53 man roster, maybe he will move to guard and surprise us all. -
If memory serves me right Walton was a highly thought of OC prospect in a ZBS. Why and how he ended up with the Giants and their power run schema had to be all about the Benjamin's
sandcastle and CWBIII like this. -
League minimum?

(Edited). Just finished watching 15 minutes of offensive highlights for the Giants. Walton is definitely better than Thomas and Brenner from last year. We will see if they improve, but I would place Walton ahead of those two.Unlucky 13 likes this. -

From Andrew Abramson:
"J.D. Walton, who started at center for the New York Giants’ last year, has signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins. Financial terms were not immediately available.
Walton, 27, has started all 52 games in his NFL career. And while he can also play guard and Miami needs one, the team is looking at him for depth, according to a team source.
“He is a young, but experienced player who will be a positive addition to our offensive line,” general manager Dennis Hickey said.
Walton was a third-round pick out of Baylor in 2010.
He was graded last season by Pro Football Focus as the NFL’s No. 38 of 41 centers.
Mike Pouncey is expected to move back to center and Walton would likely be his primary backup." -

He's a bench guy with plenty of exprience who was miscast in his last system. It's purely depth. Better then the years where we went into the season with some unknown UDFA.

You guys are getting your panties up in a wad about a guy who might not even make the final cut. He's just a camp body at this point.
