Former No. 1 overall pick Jake Long realized that coming back from a torn Achilles as he approaches his 32nd birthday was going to be a struggle.
So Monday, he decided to call it a career.
Long tweeted out his thanks to friends and family, but said he wouldn’t be trying to play again.
“As I continue with my recent rehab,” he wrote, “I realize that although my heart and mind still want to play, my body is telling me something completely different.”
Long signed with the Vikings last year when injuries hit, but was lost for the season in November.
The top pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Dolphins, Long also played for the Rams and Falcons. He was a perennial Pro Bowler during his days with the Dolphins, but injuries derailed his career.

I don't know why ESPN and The Bleacher Report decided to tell me about this.
Is it because the Dolphins COULD! have had Matt Ryan? -
Hell, with what this organization has fielded since then, Matt Ryan would probably be out of the league due to injuries if we had drafted him. lolTin Indian and MikeHoncho like this.

biggest bust in Phins draft history. Passed up on a qb, who is in his prime 9 years later
-
A bust? He was the best LT in the league before injuries got to him.

BUST
Look what we could have gotten, Matt Ryan, who is in his prime right now. BUST, because we were searching for an IDENTIFYING QB for years prior and after that pick. Two years after passing on Brees, we could have fixed it. Instead we drafted Henne. and Spent the next 4 years again looking for a qb. And as much as I love RT, he isn't what Ryan has accomplished. So yes, biggest bust -
Biggest bust? C'mon the guy was elite for us, had he stayed healthy he would have ended up in Canton. Have you already forgotten Dion Jordan?

But had a chance to take him again. And passing on Brees twice makes the Long pick that much worse.

That is not a definition of a bust. For him to be a bust, he'd have to be absolutely trash at his position, which Long wasn't.Tin Indian and Steve-Mo like this.

Good luck to him. I still don't know why we took him when we didn't have a QB that was worth protecting....

Being able to get Brees again in 06 has nothing to do with the 2000 draft. Again perhaps Long wasn't the best pick but he was still a strong player.
Is Hakeem Olajuwon a Bust 1 overall because you could have had Jordan?keypusher likes this. -
Dude, we had a change to take Brees again in 2006. Blew that. Then we had a chance to get Matt Ryan, and Parcells over thought it. Not Long's fault, but no way a team without a qb, esp for 7 years, should have passed on a qb, after going 1-15. Matt Ryan was what this team needed. So for us, Long was a bust. He was hurt, sure had a few good years, but isn't playing anymore, while Matt Ryan is entering his prime.

bad comparison. They both played a long time and both were HOF's. Long was the #1 pick. When we drafted him Parcells said "Our Left side is set for 15 years." Not only was the Left side a mess until we got Albert (3-4 years later), the qb situation is still squirrly
If you think what we got from him from 2008 was warranted a # 1 pick, then we are in trouble if you were a GM. -
I know our history. I don't understand the part I bolded. I don't understand how not taking Brees (the biggest draft blunder we had) and missing on him again (the biggest FA blunder we had) somehow makes Jake Long the biggest draft blunder. Your reasoning makes literally no sense.
If you think Jake Long was the worst draft blunder we had, fine. I don't agree but that's fine. You just can't say it's the worst BECAUSE of anything with Drew Brees.Finster likes this. -
we had a chance to right a wrong
-
And?
Drew Brees has been good for a long time and still is. Matt Ryan just last year broke average. Jake Long actually played at a high level for a little bit. Jamar fletcher did **** all.
Drew Brees was the biggest blunder.....TWICE. That has no bearing on Jake Long being worse. -
Jake Long was a bust because we passed on Ryan, better?

One knee injury away from being a potential hall of famer. He just wasn't the same after that. A punishing run and pass blocker. Shows how the NFL works sometimes.

He retired years ago.
