He's lame. Wasnt funny at all (which is bad when you're supposed to be the comic relief), added nothing to the movies and added to the feeling that the movies were too childish, imo.

I have to ask, what's to like about him?

 

Almost everything about him was annoying. His voice, the way he talked, the way he walked, and just how moronic he acted was annoying and added nothing to the story, IMHO of course. I love the original trilogy but the only think I liked about Phantom Menace was Darth Maul. The rest of it was eh.

 

Fair enough. I wouldn't say I hate the character. He's just a poor substitute for 3PO and R2.

 

The new SW movies movies are exactly like the old ones, just without the benefit of nostalgia.

Mark Hamill is no Marlon Brando but he was better than Hayden Christensen. The new ones have their moments but nostalgia aside I think the original trilogy was better. Just the fact that we don't know what is going to happen to Luke and Vader while we know what will happen to Anikan and everyone else makes them better to me.

I can see why fellow fans hate him though it's a bit over-exaggerated. Jar Jar was just a ploy by Lucas to reel in younger fans to continue the franchise. I felt Jake Lloyd's way too young of an age and too-youthful acting style was the worst for me. If he were maybe 4-5 years older and a foot taller to actually match Natalie Portman's age with some decent acting, the movie wouldn't have been as bad. I mean, "Yippee"? Come on...

 

Yea, Jake lloyd was the worst part about episode 1 for me.

 

Totally agree. JarJar was just .... annoyingly uncessary. But the Jake Loyd thing was worse if you really wanted to try and like it. "I wonder what this button does ... ZOMG ... It blew up the enemy spaceship!" Or the podracing thing, I just couldnt take it seriously with him in it.
And while I enjoyed Maul and the 2 Jedi, Natalie Portman has the acting ability of a piece of driftwood.

I dont have the nostalgia for the orginal 3, I was born the year Return came out, and never really latched on to the franchise until I was a bit older. Hell, I even missed when they did the rescreeing, seeing them in the theaters. Since that time, Ive become a huge fan, but the first 3 movies were just a letdown. They felt childishly, badly, different, though at least they were all a small step up from each other.

 

The Special Edition got me really hooked even though I already had the VHS and some hand-me-down toys/clothing/etc. Portman/Knightley wasn't that bad for the first prequel and was pretty much handicapped with awkward dialogue in the script. Didn't really carry the right presence I guess.

The original trilogy hit the sweet spot between a bit of childish joys and dramatic gravity. Not too much of either and I think that was the success of the franchise. ROTS was a bit closer to that ideal though the muddled middle of horrible romantic lines bogged it down a bit.

 

As someone who never saw any of the movies until recently, I disagree. The newer ones are just terrible any way you slice them.

 

Someone that works with Lucas should have had the sack to sit him down and tell him to get rid of JarJar Binks he's the most annoying character I've ever seen in a movie. The first movie was ruined by Jar Jar and the awful acting from the young Anakin. The casting for Anakin was a nightmare from start to finish, Lucas dropped the ball there. Its a shame because most of the cast is very good and if someone had just stopped some of the childish stuff Lucas likes to do the movies could have been great. I did like the 3rd one a lot though.

But for all the hoopla surrounding who was going to play Anakin in Ep I, I'm sure some of the rumored names would've been better choices.

Pretty much Lucas and Co.'s intent with Binks. Unfortunately, while it brought new fans, it alienated older ones.

 

Be glad that Lucas wised up to the backlash against Jar Jar for the second and third movies in the prequels. Jar Jar's original arc called for him to become a Jedi knight. Yes, I'm serious. Go back and watch Phantom Menace, the last battle scene, were Jar Jar is using luck (or the Force) to take out scores of tanks and battle droids.

Thankfully Lucas actually heard the fans and changed it so instead Binks ended up being responsible for the creation of the Galactic Empire.
