This is a player I was hoping we would draft. If you havent heard of him its probably because he spent much of last year on the injury list.He would have probably been a high pick next year if he had stayed in college.
Skill-Set Summary: Jenkins' sideline-to-sideline speed is undeniable. He runs like a defensive back with plus instincts. Jenkins can fire into the backfield to disrupt runs and has no problem getting to the far side of the field to get in on defending perimeter runs. He's much better in pursuit compared to when runs go straight at him.
Jenkins has some nice blitzing ability, but with how well he plays in space, he often is defending the open field. Jenkins' speed and athleticism make him a natural in zone coverage, and he can make quick breaks to get in on plays. Jenkins won't get beat by speed in pass coverage against running backs and tight ends. He has all the makings of being a standout pass-defender in the NFL.
Jenkins would currently only be a fit as a 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL.

BTW I heard Mayock compare him to Bostic. He is off the mark .He is a different kind of player and has much more potential upside than Bostic .

Love me players from SEC!

Re: Jelani Jenkins - good pick
I don't know if I'd call him a ball hawk. Remember Jelani would get in position to intercept it, but could never hold on to it. His teammates used to razz him about it.

Really like this pick. Would like to see more offensive players in this draft, but, I like Jenkins.
And, yeah... I thought Mayock's comparison to Bostic was a little off, too.dolfan22 and CrunchTime like this. -

Well...heres what I am hearing about him...
I he hadn't had an injury....he wouldn't have been there in the 4th. Very very smart....very fast...hes football smart...that's what I keep seeing over and over with the players we are taking. Football smart... -
Was also reading he has a really tough time coming off blocks. That will only get tougher at the next level.
Does appear to be a very good athlete and was highly recruited out of high school.....if that counts for anything. -

doesn't matter now but I still say they should have taken Khaseem Greene.
big mistake ?...we shall see. -
Kid can cover, that's why we picked him up. Have to deal with double TE's in today NFL.

I've seen quite enough of guys lumbering after smaller quicker players to know I don't want to see more of it.
Jenkins can run, he can cover, may get washed out vs the run, but that is fine toXeticus likes this. -
I do think he's brought in as a project with very nice upside. At the least, should be a very nice special teamer. -

It's cool Padre. I'm good with the pick. At this point, I think its great to go for some all or nothing picks.
He will immediately provide ST upgrade.Xeticus likes this. -
Jelani Jenkins - good pick

Great on ST,plays LB and is a converted Safety. He was the only player on D that the O had to account for and he still produced.
Blocked punts, blitzes off the edge and so on. His downfall was a bad Combine but has game speed and instincts that are off the charts.

Unless Koa is gone, which would not surprise me -

Like this pick. 9th rated national recruit out of high school with the talent to possibly have been a 2nd rounder next year had he stayed his senior year. Same thing happened with Reshad Jones who we stole in the 5th b/c he came out a year early but would've been drafted much higher had he stayed, too.

Thus, Jenkins/Davis/Taylor/Jordan
Multiple coverages or even zero blitz packages that can actually get to the Qb, which is one of the reasons why Dansby and Burnett are goneFin D likes this. -
Our defense is going to be so diverse with that they can all do. Its going to be fun to watch what we can come up with. We HAVE to figure out a way to slow NE down and I think we have the firepower to put some points on the board now.
-
Perhaps he starts on STs but I think they eventually will put him in against those two TEs sets the Patriots and other teams like to run .
One quality our defensive draft picks have in common is that they are all fast ,they can cover the whole field and they are efficient at pass coverage. We already have run stuffers.ToddPhin likes this. -

Gators coach Will Muschamp, talking this morning with Fins writers, insists new Dolphin Jelani Jenkins is an everydown LB.

So excited for this kid. Seems like such a good dude as well.
