The way Philbin has been openly and publicly disrespected by his players always keeps alive the possibility of a mid season firing.

I dont think we know yet what the expectations will be this season.

I already know we arent making the playoffs. But Ross might see this as a rebuilding year and may think Philbin needs another season or two.

Look at the holes we have lol linebacker, DT, CB, guards, and two receivers., bottom five in cap sopace .Ross has an idea this is a rebuilding year.

Next year in a shiny renovated stadium will be judgment day for Philbin.

Apparently he only needs to win about half of the games, give or take, to keep his job. Because in Miami mediocrity is good enough.

 

I think the cutting of Hartline and Gibson, along with the fact the Dolphins are looking for a way to part with Wallace, clearly shows that Tannebaum sees the 2015 season as a rebuilding season.

It appears he is looking to get rid of the veterans who have been around during the mediocre years and he probably wants to see what younger players they can count on in the future.

This is probably going to be a team that will win a maximum of 7 games next year and a 5-11 record would not shock me in the least.

I think it is now Tannebaums job to turn this team into a consistent winner and I just don't see Philbin or Hickey as part of this long term plan.

Hopefully fans will will enjoy the new renovations in the stadium next season, because I don't think the 2015 version of the Dolphins will entice any more fans to attend games.

I have said all along that it was going to take 2-3 more years for this team to become a legitimate playoff contender and there has been nothing I have seen so far this off season which makes me feel any different.

In fact I think even Tannebaum realizes that it is going to take a lot more talent and a better coaching staff before this team is ready to contend with the big boys in the NFL on a yearly basis.

As far as the comments that Philbin is the worst head coach in the NFL. The fact he is returning for the 2015 season clearly shows that Ross just may be the worst owner in the NFL too.

 

I see us being a good team offensively to be honest. In fact, Im pretty certain we will improve over last season..and when you break out the numbers..we had a very good first season under Lazors offense. The defensive side...now that I have no clue on.

 

If Hickey keeps drafting like he did last year (it wasn't great, but it's looking like a good draft), it'll be hard to kick him out.

 

I read the same article over a week ago. It listed Jeff Fisher ranked 18 despite his underachieving 19 seasons. He ranked Jay Gruden with a 4-12 record higher and gave Rex Ryan a pass because he is a "new coach" (same win loss % btw at .479). Oh and Gus Bradley with a record of 7-25 above Philbin?

What could you have seen this off season so far that would have changed your mind(Philbin fired?) How can you predict a terrible season with a win total when FA or the draft has even taken place yet? I would imagine that the players we get rid of or add in FA or acquire in the draft will shape what kind of team we will have...hard to imagine forecasting such gloom when things for 2015 have hardly taken shape.

 

Landry was a very good pick in the second round. James appeared to be an excellent pick as a RT,but his play went downhill once he was moved to LT. Hopefully he will get to play RT all next season and will continue to develop into a solid starter for years to come.

As far as the rest of the players drafted by Hickey last year. We will have to wait and see if any of them can eventually become productive players in the NFL.

I think last years draft seemed better than it was only because it was being compared to the drafting by Ireland the previous six years.

I think for Hickey to stick beyond this coming season. Several of last years draft picks and rookie free agents are going to have to step up and be major contributors during the 2015 season.

Hickey is also going to have similar success in the first two rounds of this years draft, as he did in the 2014 draft.

I think it is all going to come down to how Tannebaum feels about working with Hickey. Since Tannebaum was the GM of the Jets, he might have other GM candidates he would be interested in hiring as the new GM if things don't work out with Hickey.

 

The fact they are looking to get rid of the best WR on their roster, as well as cutting two of their top four receivers from last year basically shows that they are in rebuilding mode.

I have absolutely no problem with them rebuilding this team. It is obvious by their record over the past five years that they have a lot of very average players on their roster they need to get rid of before they can get better.

They only have 4-5 quality starters on the defense and they can't rebuild this ineffective defense in just one off season.

It appears Tannehill is going to have to learn to play with several new WR's next season. Since he and Wallace are said to have had trouble getting on the same page. We have to hope that he can have more success in developing better timing and a better relationship with his new receivers next year.

The Dolphins need to find two quality guards and some reliable backup linemen for the offensive line. Also if they can't afford to sign Clay, they are going to have to find his replacement in the draft or in free agency.

I just hope Tannebaum will rebuild the team properly this time. Trying to rebuild by paying overpriced free agents certainly hasn't worked.

As long as they are willing to rebuild through the draft, I am willing to accept that it might be a couple of years before they become a consistent winner. I see next year as one step backward as the younger players learn to play in the NFL. With a year under their belt heading into the 2016 season, hopefully they can take a giant step forward.

 

Well, you're right the draft looks better because of Ireland, but unless we have very different ideas of what "major contributors" in that bolded sentence means, I'd say only one more "major contributor" (let's say bona-fide starter that we're not looking to replace) needs to emerge and it's a very good draft compared to the average NFL draft. Three such players in a single draft is better than average anywhere I'd say.

Who will that be? Not sure, but I really hope it's Turner because that would plug a hole at OG.

On a related note (related to the comment about comparing to Ireland's drafts), I think your projections are often more pessimistic than they would be if you only considered events (and people) that matter for building today's Dolphins. Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the feeling all those letdowns over decades past is eating away at your view of today's team.

 

I am not anti-Hickey. I think he did a good job last year. I just see that it is Tannebaum who is running the football side of the organization at this time and there is no way of knowing if he will want to keep Hickey after this coming season, if Philbin is fired.

If Ross had hired a GM after the 2013 season and given him the power to hire or fire the head coach, the need to hire Tannebaum may not have been an issue. With Tannebaum now the man responsible for getting this organization turned around, I just don't know if he buys into Philbin and Hickey.

Obviously the more players from last years draft and this years draft who can step up and be solid contributors on the team will benefit Hickeys case in remaining the GM, even if Philbin is fired after next season.

I just think that it will all come down to what Tannebaum wants to do once the 2015 season is over. Ross gave him the power to run the football operations. Therefore I assume Ross will allow Tannebaum to decide the future of the players, the coaches, and the GM,with the Dolphins.


In regards to your last comment and my negativity. I won't disagree that years of mediocrity has lessened my positivity in regards to the Dolphin organization.

While I remain a fan. My expectations as a fan since 1966 is far more than a 500 winning percentage. I am willing to go through another rebuilding process at this time only because I realize the talent needs to be upgraded at numerous positions before they can be a legitimate SB contender.

To me, winning the SB is really all that matters. There is one champion each season and 31 losers. The only way to have a chance at winning the SB is to make the playoffs. My frustration is the fact this team hasn't even made the playoffs in the past six seasons and they really haven't been a serious SB contender since Marino was in his prime.

For all the young fans on here, you have the time and years ahead of you to possibly see the Dolphins win another SB. My hope is that at my age, I will still be around to see them make at least a strong run in the playoffs and with any luck, I will see them win another SB before I become worm food.

 

I'm getting that feeling too, especially after it was reported Hickey has to "clear" his choices with Tannenbaum despite saying he has full power regarding who to draft. I really hope Tannenbaum (which means Christmas tree in German) is the right guy.. I mean he doesn't have a stellar record you know.

 

I wasn't happy with the hiring of Tannebaum. He left the Jets in Cap Hell after he was fired as their GM. Now that he is the top man in the organization in regards to football operations, we just have to hope he learned from his mistakes with the Jets and he can be the man to finally turn this team into a consistent winner.

 

It is premature to declare "rebuild" year.

EVERYONE agrees Hartline should have been cut. I think we could see a no-name WR thrive in this offense if he can run crisp routes and catch.

Also, the draft could sport a gem or two. No longer are the days of a wideout learning for a season. Rookies are straight ballin' these days.

Let's wait and see who Miami gets.

I was against Philbin since he was interviewed though. Hate him as our HC.

I'm crossing my fingers that this year is dumped on him, and we start over in 2016 with a bunch of cap space and a good HC. One who's proven himself elsewhere, and not yet another rookie HC doomed to failure.

 

Philbin didn't cut Hartline, Tannebaum did. It was the obvious move to make.

 

From what I've read Tannembaum isn't over personnel decisions, he's over the other aspects of football operations so that Hickey can focus on the personel side.

 

Oh, I understand. I was responding in part to the fact that Colmax said that "EVERYONE" agreed that Hartline had to go. I don't think he did.

My feelings on Philbin haven't changed one way or the other. I think he's awful and I always have.

 

This is what is driving me crazy about this owner, front office, and team. Why would you give Philbin one more year, yet start a rebuild process at the same time???

What will the new coach want when it comes to players? What kind of offense? Power run game or short passing offense perhaps? Defense? Will he want to run a 3-4 instead of a 4-3? Since we don't know, how many wrong choices will be made this year (in regards to what a new coach may want in players) that means the REAL rebuild has to start in 2016, with the mistakes of 2015 added to the list of things to fix.

Ross seemed intent on giving Philbin and company another year to turn it around. Did he change his mind and hire Tannebaum to start a rebuild now, but is too embarassed to reverse course and fire Philbin (after telling him he was safe)? Yet Tannebaum really can't do a proper rebuild until Philbin is gone.....

Hopefully, these moves are just to clear cap space and give Philbin a better team to try and put together that elusive winning season in 2015. The other explanation is that this owner and front office are vastly more disfunctional than I ever imagined things could get. :(

I hear you bro, but we won't truly start over until dopey no longer owns OUR team. Some believe philbin is on the hot seat if we have another .500 or below season. Well, I still don't see his firing as guaranteed. If ross had the personality trait to admit failure imo he would have sold the team long before this.

And let's say philbin does get fired this year. Tannenbaum will be the one to let philbin go instead of the guy who hand picked him in order to save face. But guess what folks, yet another jest addition will be right around the corner.... the Mangina. Don't believe me? Time will tell.

 

It all rolls down the hill of ****. I'm not sure if Ross is the worst owner in the league, but he is the dumbest from a football perspective. So it stands to reason he allows one of the worst coaches in the NFL to retain his employment. This season is shaping up to be a debacle.

 

Ross screwed up and announced Philbin was returning after the meaningless win against a bad Vikings team. He obviously realized his mistake the next week after the Dolphins were manhandled by a bad Jets team on the Dolphins home field.

Instead of making the move he should have made after the Jets game, firing Philbin on the spot. He decided to bring in Tannebaum and gave Tannebaum the power to run the organization. It will be Tannebaum who will now be resposible for the firing of Philbin and possibly the firing of Hickey after the 2015 season.

Ross will merely use the excuse that he wanted Tannebaum to have the opportunity to work with both these men during the season, before deciding if they were the right men for the job or not.

As his hand picked head of football operations, Ross will abide by the decisions Tannebaum will make in regards to the future direction of this team. Even if that means using the 2015 season to begin a new rebuilding process.

The talent, nor the coaching staff are good enough at this time for the team to be anything but a mediocre team at best next season. So they might as well see what the younger players have to offer as they look to the future.

I believe Tannebaum is already looking at the 2016 season, more than he is concerned with the 2015 season. With a new head coach in 2016, more cap space and two more draft classes on the roster, I think he sees at this time it is going to take a few years to turn this team around. He is the one individual in the football operations who seems to have the time and the authority on his side to accept the reality that this team needs to be rebuilt again.

I see the 2015 season as a season of cleaning up the mess and finding those players who they can build around for the future. Tannebaum will then let the next head coach and GM find the right players to fill in around this core group of players after the 2015 is over.

 

Yeah, say the fans. However, we all know that Mr. Ross makes those decisions and if he stays true to form, he'll make the opposite decision of what the fans think should happen...I almost believe he reads the fan forum sites and purposefully goes in whatever the opposite direction that most fans are thinking to make his decisions... Like botching the Harbaugh thing (which I didn't like anyway) and still keeping Sparano around. Like giving Ireland an option to take a cut in his decision making processes and expecting him to stay. Like botching several GM candidate interviews (by insisting they have to keep Philbo around) and taking the 4th or 5th guy in Hickey. He'll likely do something similar next year with Philbo and keep him, ask Hickey to have less power then bring in Rob Ryan to run the D and be asst head coach... I'm just ranting here, but Ross has continually made goof after goof in running this franchise. There is no stability here from year to year so we will continue to be the laughing stock of the league....
