out of 80 offensive tackles, he finished the year ranking 70th in run blocking, 75th in pass protection, and 76th overall. he has given up the most amount of hurries of any tackle in the entire league. in the 5 games he started at LT, he didn't have 1 game with a positive grade in pass blocking.
is this really the guy you guys want protecting Tannehill's BLINDSIDE?
for comparison, Colombo last year:
pass pro: 70th of 76 OT's.
run blocking: 67th
overall: 67th out of 76
Ireland really is amazing...he drafted the one tackle that actually WOULDN'T be an upgrade over Colombo lol.

A rookie tackle playing poorly and improving is very far from rare.

Martin just a kid still and going to end up being a very good 0-lineman. He needs to get stronger, but has quick feet and long arms. Also very smart player out of Stanford. [very coachable] Get him in the weight room and lock the door behind him. He will end up being fine and a great building block to our line with Pouncey.

He definitely sucked this year. I don't think there is any way around that. Hopefully he improves significantly this offseason.

Martin going to be just fine, the kid got all the tools and work ethic to be a very good player in the NFL.

Bull****.
That simple, watched every game, Martin was far superior to Long or Colombo
PFF has jumped the shark, or to put it better, do believe what you see or what they tell you?Da 'Fins, DHPVW, Pandarilla and 2 others like this. -

a lot of people are content with letting Long walk and just plugging Martin in on the left side but that is a HUGE gamble to me, i don't think i want this kid protecting Tannehill's blindside.Bpk likes this. -
Yes, I believe PFF because they actually break down every play and watch the specific player when doing their grading. I can't watch everything in the bar I'm at.Bpk likes this. -

LBsFinest: can you post the full article, love to see how Jake Long and other's ranked also.

However he did come around during the season, this is why I'm not buying what PFF is selling, not after watching every single snap of every game.
Colombo was just dreadful, as in Peppers just destroyed him, that never happened to Martin. -
-
For me, Long looked bad, lacked confidence, immobile, not the same player I'd watched 08-10 -
-
Long this year? I dont think there was a bit of difference between the two -
-
Got to love the PFF stat followers.
Martin showed signs of getting better, in fact he looked better than Long did at LT this year.
I was against signing Long after the past year and a half he had, but after watching Gardner at RT, we need to sign Long and keep Martin at RT for now. -
Jake Long-
pass pro: 35th
run blocking: 48th
overall: 46th
Pouncey-
pass pro: 3rd
run blocking: 10th
overall: 8th
Incognito-
pass pro: 16th
run blocking: 25th
overall: 24th
John Jerry-
pass pro: 25th
run blocking: 77th
overall: 49th
Garner actually got positive grades at RT in 3 of the 5 games he started (at home Pats, 49ers, Bills). and in the other 2 games, he was solid in pass pro against the Jags but struggled blocking our RBs. and we all remember how bad he was in pass pro in his last game in new england, and the numbers reflect that.Perfectville_USA likes this. -

And if I were to believe PFF Fasano was a top 5 TE for a few years there. PFF are human folks. You put Boomer, CK and gang in there I'd bet you'd get wildly different ratings from each person.

To many of the "expert" types when it comes to the NFL are BS salesmen.
Martin looked light in the bucket, and he struggled out of his stance at times at RT. But his punch and footwork were there and he had a nice hustle to keep blocking when the play broke down.
He plays "tall" sometimes, and when he tries to anchor he is light, but otherwise he is fine, no one blew by him they way Jake was getting roasted. -
And btw, rookies playing WELL is not unheard of either. It's not like Martin was a 6th round pick. -

However I objectively disagree with PFF's ranking for Martin, could care less about Ireland. I spent 4 months watching him play and I believe they are wrong.GARDENHEAD likes this. -
So if PFF is watching cler shots of him on every snap, i'll take their opinion as worthy of note.MrClean likes this. -

He looked mediocre from what I saw. He reminded me of a lesser Pouncey in his first year. I could see him becoming a top 14 LT next year without too much difficulty from gaining weight/strength. He's fine on the left side. Garner wasn't and is a backup. The guard spots were mediocre. I would keep one of the two guys there as they're both RGs through and through that can road grade but really poor in pass blocking.
This argument reminds me of the ridiculous scouts versus numbers arguments.
Use both geniuses! -
