Because the Dolphins changed coaches this offseason, they are holding an extra veterans minicamp this week. Attendance is voluntary for the session and one player who has exercised his right to stay home is safety Reshad Jones. According to a report from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, it may be a while before Jones reverses course.Salguero reports that Jones is “not content” with his contract and that he plans to sit out the offseason unless the Dolphins find a way to make him happier about the deal. Jones signed a four-year deal with the Dolphins in 2014 and has base salaries of $7.225 million and $7.060 million for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Those numbers put him among the top 10 safeties in terms of average annual salary. Jones is coming off the first Pro Bowl selection of his career and was named a co-MVP for the 2015 Dolphins along with wide receiver Jarvis Landry.
Jones will not be subject to fines until the team’s mandatory minicamp in June. It’s not clear if he’d follow Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor’s lead from last season and stay away from that work, training camp and beyond in hopes of landing the deal he wants.
Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald adds that defensive end Mario Williams and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh were also absent from Tuesday’s practice, although he adds it wasn’t a “huge surprise” that they weren’t in attendance.

I don't like this news, on any front reported really.
Jones signed a deal in 2014, for 4 years. You're paid well. Play it out.

One year you did good, play like that for 4 years and your next contract will be paid accordingly. 1 year does not qualify for getting a new contract. More pissed about Suh and Williams.. Really Williams you just got a bad season and wanted a new start and your skip out on an important camp from your new head coach.. SMH these guys..

I don't blame Reshad for wanting a new contract. It is not even surprising because players do this all the time. His contract still makes him one of the top ten paid safeties in the league (currently ninth). But this off season has seen Mark Barron sign a $45 million deal with the Rams, worth an average of $9 million a year. He's seen Eric Berry land the franchise tag and he will probably end up being one of the highest paid safeties. And the likes of Earl Thomas, Devin McCourty, and Jarius Byrd have all signed extensions or with their present team as free agents on hefty contracts. So it is not surprising to see Reshad Jones want to be one of the top few paid safeties in the league, or even the top paid safety because he's arguably one of the top few in the league without a doubt.
Is it good news he is potentially holding out for a new deal? Not really, but there is no reason this team can't get an extension done if both sides can agree on a figure. Plus let's face it, a lot of us have probably been saying we should be looking at extending Reshad Jones before all of this came out. So hopefully our front office gets something done because the last thing we want is to see a player of the calibre of Jones leave in free agency like the others.Pandarilla likes this. -
psssst Reshad, the team initially will "try" Isa Abdul-Quddus at FS but he's good playing close to the line of scrimmage. There's a good chance they'll draft a FS later this week and/or bring in a vet. Soooo hintity hint hint.

It's not a strong/free safety kind of defense. It's more of a split safety kind of scheme where the guys are fairly interchangeable. The run fits in this defense are different than in a lot of defenses, though. You're asking safeties to fill a gap between the TE and OT, instead of having to come down in run support between the TE(or uncovered OT) and the cornerback.

Who doesnt want more money?
Jones is best served by gaining the attention from this, but he doesnt have enough leverage to actually miss anything significant IMO.
It is a precursor to next offseason however. This is what will happen when you continually sign guys like Wallace, Albert, and Suh. Jones knows Miami will spend big, and he wants to be at the front of the line.

Pay the man. He actually deserves it. There are a ton of players on this team that definitely aren't worth their contract.. but he deserves it.

It would make sense if he was being paid peanuts, but the fact that he is already one of the highest paid safeties in the league and signed that contract only two years ago, is a bit concerning.
I wonder if he is willing to sign a longer extension in order to keep him here through his next free agency period and completely through his prime? Because if so, I think Miami is actually getting the better value, long term.dolphin25 likes this. -
He has had more than one year of "being good". Ever since he became a full time starter he's been one of the most consistent players on our defense. Yes, last year was his best, but he has always been an above average player in the league.dolfan7171 and Finster like this.

I respect that position, but this sounds like the position to take if you are a Reshad Jones fan, not a Miami Dolphins fan.
The Miami Dolphins are playing a game where underpaying players is an optimal strategy. They should do their best to pay Jones below his fair market value. -
Jones isn't holding out. I doubt he does this offseason.
